Use the present continuous tense to describe actions happening now accurately. Distinguish the usage of the present continuous tense from other tenses. III. Teaching Procedures Learning activities: Step 1 Lead - in Show a picture of students having a New Year's gala (as in the textbook). T: Look at this picture. What are the students doing? Invite Ss to answer using “They are...”. Then say: Today, we will learn about the present continuous tense which is used to talk about things happening now. Step 2 Presentation Introduce the rule T: Read the text about New Year celebrations at Kitty's school and pay attention to the expressions in bold. Then work out the rule: We use the present continuous tense to talk about things that are happening now. Explain the formation of positive and negative sentences, and how to ask and answer questions using the present continuous tense with the help of the tables in the textbook. Introduce the -ing form Show the table about how to make the -ing form of a verb. Explain the rules with examples. Step 3 Practice Work on Activity A T: Amy is showing Millie a video about how her family are celebrating New Year. Complete her sentences with the correct forms of the verbs in brackets. Ask Ss to finish the task independently and then check the answers. Work on Activity B T: Amy and Sandy are talking on the phone. Complete their conversation. Use the present continuous tense of the verbs in brackets. Ask Ss to finish the task in pairs and then check the answers. Step 4 Production Work on Activity C T: Find some photos of New Year celebrations at your school or home. Write a short text about what people in the photos are doing, using the present continuous tense. Ask Ss to show their photos and read their texts in front of the class. IV. Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness Assess Ss' mastery of the present continuous tense by observing their answers in Activities A and B. Observe whether Ss can correctly use the present continuous tense to describe actions in Activity C, showing their ability to apply the tense. Evaluate learning outcomes by: Checking the accuracy of verb forms in Activities A and B. Assessing the fluency and accuracy of texts in Activity C. This lesson helps Ss master the present continuous tense, improving their ability to describe present actions. It also combines language learning with New Year celebration topics, enhancing learning interest. V. Design Purpose The lead - in activates Ss' prior knowledge and connects to the lesson topic. Presentation clearly explains the rule and formation of the present continuous tense. Practice activities reinforce the usage of the tense.
