For decades, Jean Moffatt has been reaching out over the airwaves. As an amateur radio operator, Moffatt has connected with people worldwide. “By sending signals to satellites, I’ve talked to people from the Arctic to the Antarctic,” Moffatt said. And on Wednesday at the Ontario Science Centre, the 96-year-old got to go even further.
An amateur radio connection allowed the senior and students to speak with Commander Luca aboard the International Space Station. By connection, Moffatt told the astronaut she was very excited, admitting that this was a bucket-list wish she had for many years. Then Moffatt asked if Luca could keep the space station clean and tidy, adding that as a “mature woman” she had done lots of cleaning in her life.
When Moffatt was a young girl, she moved to Toronto with her family, hoping there would be chances for a girl interested in science. She desperately wanted to go to university, but moving house placed a significant burden on their finances. Not discouraged, she took a course in amateur radio, then a popular technology, and shortly after she got her license. After retiring, Moffatt started volunteering at the Ontario Science Centre. Armed with her radio license, she helped set up the centre’s first radio shack (无线电设备室).
The idea to connect with the International Space Station came just after Moffatt’s 36th birthday. Finally after 60 years with the help of amateur radio operators and NASA, Moffatt made her connection. While the connection wasn’t very clear, she was S moved to tears, telling those who had gathered to watch that it was the “highlight” of her life.
Moffatt plans to keep volunteering at the centre, introducing younger people to the older form of technology, and to keep speaking to anyone who can pick up her signal. “It’s a technology even older than me and I love amateur radio,” Moffatt added.
4. What can we learn about Moffatt from the first two paragraphs?
A. She attempted an Internet talk. B. She was an environmentalist.
C. She was into space exploration. D. She achieved a lifetime goal.
5. Why did Moffatt and her family move to Toronto?
A. To pursue a radio license. B. To seek better opportunities.
C. To attend a radio school. D. To survive financial troubles.
6. What does Moffatt plan to do further?
A. Promote radio communication. B. Continue her passion for radio.
C. Start her radio shack business. D. Acquire new scientific ability.
7. Which of the following can best describe Moffatt?
A. Creative and ambitious. B. Out-spoken and energetic.
C. Passionate and determined. D. Broad-minded and generous.

Protected areas have mixed success in protecting wildlife according to the largest study on the effects of reserves(保护区).
A team led by researchers from the U. K. examined water bird data from 1, 506 protected areas and analyzed more than 27, 000 bird populations across the world. The authors write that their study, published in Nature, is the first robust(强有力的), global assessment of protected area influence on bird populations. The scientists found that protected areas with management of water birds and their habitats were more likely to benefit those populations.
“Our study shows that, while many protected areas are working well, many others are failing to have positive effect, ” lead author Hannah Wauchope of the University of Exeter says in a statement. Rather than focusing only on the total global area protected, we need more focus on ensuring areas are well-managed to benefit biodiversity(生物多样性) . “The study compared water bird populations before and after the establishment of protected areas and also compared trends of similar populations within and outside of protected areas. Water birds respond quickly to changes in site quality, making them a good group to look at when studying the impact of protected areas.
“In the majority of places we looked at, wildlife populations were still stable or were increasing, but they weren’t doing any better than in unprotected areas, ” Wauchope says. “That’s disappointing, but not surprising. There seems to be this disconnect between people talking about how much land is protected and whether those areas are actually doing anything positive. ”
This research comes ahead of a United Nations meeting in China to discuss biodiversity goals for the next decade. Several countries have already devoted to protecting 30 percent of the planet by 2030, yet researchers say protection alone does not necessarily ensure positive outcomes for species.
“Efforts to reach a certain area-based goal such as 30 percent by 2030--without a focus on improving the condition of existing protected areas will achieve little, ” says co-author Julia Jones from Bangor University. “When world leaders gather in China later this year to set goals for the next decade, I really hope to see a focus on effectiveness of protected areas, rather than simply how much surface area is devoted to them.”
“We are not saying protected areas don’t work, ”Wauchope concludes in the statement. “The key point is that their effects vary hugely, and the biggest thing this depends on is whether they are managed with species in mind-we can’t just expect protected areas to work without effective management. ”
8. What is the purpose of the UK’s study?
A. To see whether bird populations have increased in protected areas.
B. To test whether water birds can adapt to new environments.
C. To record the changes of water birds worldwide.
D. To help water birds survive in hard conditions.
9. Why are water birds chosen as the study subject?
A They are an endangered species
B. They can sense environmental changes.
C. They can help change the quality of waters.
D They can hardly be found outside protected areas.
10. What fact makes Wauchope feel disappointed?
A. Protected areas are not attractive to water birds.
B. There is a decline in the number of protected areas.
C. There is not enough protected land around the world.
D. Protected areas fail to work better than unprotected areas.
11. What is Hannah Wauchope’s advice about protected areas?
A. They should occupy a large area.
B. They should host various animals.
C. They should be under good management.
D. They should give water birds more freedom.
D
Is there any more immediate way to immerse yourself in a culture than to taste a national dish? The answer is no. And yet, what does a national dish really mean as cities become increasingly diverse and globalization is rampant? That’s the focus of Ayala von Bremzen’s National Dish: Around the World in Search of Food, History, and the Meaning of Home.
“Food carries the emotional charge of a flag, which is crucial to claiming deep historical roots,” maintains von Bremzen. Indeed the rise of gastro tourism (美食旅游) has meant anyone with an interest in cuisine will want to travel to, say, Italy, to experience pasta in its spiritual home.
“Does food taste different when we imagine it represents a spirit of place?” von Bremzen asks. Her response is yes, but her book asks the reader to add another layer to the culinary (食物的) experience: As much as these foods signify a charming education in history, we often don’t get the deeper story behind cooking culture, which invariably includes many social issues.
Take pizza, the star of the fascinating chapter about Naples. In Naples in the late 19th century, people primarily ate porridge and black bread. Many believed that life might be better outside the country. From 1880 to 1915, 13 million Italians emigrated (移民) to North and South America. In places like New York City, they ate inexpensive pizza to remind them of their homeland.
Those pies came to symbolize Italian food in the US. Meanwhile, interest in pizza back in Italy had been stagnant (无变化的). In 1807 there were 54 recorded pizza spots in Naples, and by 1907 the number had barely doubled. Now there are more than 3,000. Pizza needed to take a road trip to establish its Italianness “first to immigrants, then to the rest of the world”, von Bremzen writes.
France’s most well-known meal these days isn’t stewed meat. It’s the French taco, the globally influenced fast-food item that’s stormed the country over the past dozen years, featuring a variety of fillings — ironically, often including a nonlocal product: French fries.
The history lessons and von Bremzen’s encounters with local personalities are so entertaining that I’d follow her anywhere.
12. What does the underlined word “rampant” in paragraph one mean?
A. Misleading. B. Widespread. C. Hurtful. D. Conditional.
13. Why did the people of Naples move abroad?
A. To seek a better life. B. To learn about foreign cultures.
C. To promote their traditional food. D. To pursue higher education opportunities.
14. What was the effect of pizza’s popularity in the US?
A. Pizza turned into a luxury item in Naples.
B. Pizza became a global symbol of Italian culture.
C. There was a decline in pizza consumption in Italy.
D. Italian pizza makers innovated their traditional recipes.
15. What is the main argument of Anya von Bremzen’s book?
A. Food is a universal language.
B. Food tourism is the future of travel.
C. National dishes are losing their cultural significance.
D. Food can represent the history and identity of a culture.

What Makes a Great Scientist?
Throughout history, scientists have shaped our world by driving progress, solving global challenges, and improving lives. From medical breakthroughs to technological innovations, their contributions inspire humanity to explore the unknown.
One scientist I deeply admire is Tu Youyou. Her discovery of artemisinin, a treatment for malaria, has saved millions of lives. Despite limited resources, she persisted in researching traditional Chinese medicine and eventually revolutionized malaria treatment, earning a Nobel Prize in 2015.
Tu’s story teaches me that greatness lies in perseverance and purpose. She prioritized saving lives over personal fame, proving that science should serve humanity. As a student, I’m inspired to embrace curiosity, overcome challenges, and contribute meaningfully to society. Truly, great scientists are defined not only by their achievements but also by their dedication to making the world better.

Throughout history, great scientists have always been the driving force behind human progress. Among them, Stephen Hawking is an outstanding one.
Hawking made significant contributions to the field of cosmology with his profound research on black holes and the origin of the universe. His unyielding spirit and insatiable curiosity about the unknown world are truly inspiring.
Hawking’s life teaches me that no matter how difficult the situation is, I should never lose my passion for learning and the courage to pursue my dreams. I will carry forward his noble spirit and make my own mark on the path of human progress.
