For most people, having something important stolen feels like a disaster. Robbie Pruitt admitted when his mountain bike was stolen last September, he got mad. But soon his emotions took a turn. After letting go of his anger, he found himself on a road to sympathy (同情) instead.
As a biker, Pruitt’s first priority was to buy one again, but when he went bike shopping, he found the pickings slim. The shortage in supply got him thinking: What if the person who’d taken his bike had done so because he truly needed bikes to get to work?
With that thought in mind, Pruitt came up with a plan and posted it to a local Facebook group. He offered to fix bikes free of charge for anyone who needed it. Pruitt also put out a call for bikes people don’t use, which he would repair—again for free—and then donate to people who could truly use them but didn’t have the budget to buy a bike.
The day the post went live, Pruitt was excited about a list of 30 used bicycles. And this was followed by more than 500 posts from people who either had bikes to donate or that needed fixing soon after. By the end of the month, Pruitt had repaired more than 140 bikes for donation.
Pruitt tries to give his donations to struggling families. Beyond simply satisfying a material need, he has provided an opportunity for kids in his neighborhood to learn how to fix their own bikes.
In addition to practical skills, Pruitt’s lessons teach teamwork, encourage self-esteem, and develop feelings of community. “Pruitt is certainly providing a service, but it’s not the bikes. It’s the relationships in the community. It’s the impact he made on people. All the neighborhood kids are spending a lot more time doing something that’s in their power,” Pruitt’s next-door neighbor Danny told The Washington Post.
4. How did Pruitt feel after he went to the bikeshop?
A. He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
5. Why did Pruitt put out a call?
A. To find his lost bike. B. To collect old bikes.
C. To raise some money for charity. D. To advertise his bike repair shop.
6. Which of the following best describes Robbie Pruitt?
A. Caring and inspiring. B. Considerate and loyal.
C Outgoing and brave. D. Responsible and humorous.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Robbie Pruitt: A Bike Repairman.
B. A Bike Thief: A Trouble Maker.
C. A Kind Act: Inspiration From A Stolen Bike.
D. Bike Shopping: An Unexpected Adventure.
D 5. B 6. A 7. C

Authorities have moved to tighten control of the rapidly expanding semi-prepared food industry, specifying definitions of precooked dishes and rolling out rules on the use of additives (添加剂) in the sector to ensure food safety. Restaurant s are also being encouraged to identify dishes on their menus that include semi-prepared ingredients (食材), a move that experts say will help customers make informed decisions.
The reforms, led by the State Administration for Market Regulation, which watches and checks product quality and consumer rights, were detailed in an announcement issued on Thursday by six government agencies.
Share prices of companies involved in the semi-prepared food sector fell by an average of 2 percent on the A-share market on Monday because of the strengthened oversight Industry insiders said the rules were the first to explain the definition of semi-prepared food and set out safety and quality standards for the multibillion yuan industry.
China has more than 70,000 companies making food items that have undergone some preparation but are not fully cooked or ready to eat, according to Xinhua News Agency. Their output value topped 500 billion yuan ($69.4 million) last year and is on track to go beyond 1 trillion yuan in a few years, it said.
The new rules tell the difference between semi-prepared food — also known as prepackaged meals — and other food items, such as instant noodles, frozen dumplings and salads. They say semi-prepared food must be a dish that can be consumed after simple preparations such as heating or boiling.
Experts said makers of frozen foods such as dumplings and hamburgers will no longer be regarded as being semi-prepared food businesses, and will be unable to ignore regulations in their own sector or enjoy preferential policies tailor-made for semi-prepared food makers. They said the generalization of the concept of semi-prepared food had previously created regulatory difficulties.
8. Why is it necessary to watch and check the semi-prepared food industry?
A. To raise people’s awareness of food safety concerns.
B. To ban the use of semi-prepared prepared ingredients.
C. To encourage restaurants to identify dishes on their menus.
D. To guarantee food safety through strengthened regulations.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Safety and quality standards imposed on food industry.
B. Great loss suffered by the customers.
C. Effects on semi-prepared food industry made by the new rules.
D. Rules aiming to define semi-prepared food.
10. Which of the following statement is true?
A. Semi-prepared food can be directly consumed.
B Instant noodles are considered as semi-prepared food.
C. Output value of semi-prepared food is decreasing in China.
D. Semi-prepared food makers enjoy preferential treatment.
11. What is the expert’s attitude towards the regulatory reforms?
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring C. Objective. D. Positive.
D 9. C 10. D 11. D

A roomful of hundreds of blooming orchids (盛开的兰花) is always a breathtaking sight. But Smithsonian Gardens has gone even further with its 28th annual orchid show held in the Kogod Courtyard. For the first time, Smithsonian Gardens used art to enrich the showy natural display, selecting the work of Baltimore-based artist Phaan Howng. Howng hopes her art inspires audiences to take action to support the protection of orchid species.
Accompanying around 350 live orchids, Howng’s original artwork features brightly colored flowerpots, hand-painted tree wraps, and three-dimensional sculptures (雕塑作品) of a select group of orchids. To construct the sculptures, she used 3D prints of plants in the Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection and then mounted them onto a steel base. They were then revised and finished with various artificial (人造的) materials.
The orchid plants can spend only a short time outside their ideal growing conditions: 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with 65 to 80 percent humidity (湿度). Those conditions are maintained year-round at the Smithsonian’s 16,000-square-foot greenhouse. Justin Kondrat, lead horticulturist (园艺家) for the Smithsonian Gardens Orchard Collection, says the 28,000-square-foot Kogod Courtyard is an acceptable environment for the short term. Smithsonian Gardens employees regularly maintain humidity and provide nutrients during the exhibition.
The annual show educates visitors about orchids’ precarious situation in some areas of the world. The number of orchids has significantly declined due to illegal harvesting in some regions, and many species are now threatened by changes in climate and habitat. Orchards are found around the globe everywhere except in Antarctica, says Kondrat. The largest diversity is in the tropics (热带地区), though they are under the most threat there due to disappearing habitats.
Horticulturists periodically enhance the collection. Smithsonian Gardens aims to use appropriate collection techniques and safeguard the orchids for future generations and for scientific research and use, Kondrat says. Every orchid “is a living collection item,” Kondrat notes, adding that it is given “the same level of care and attention to detail as any of the photos hanging in the National Portrait Gallery.”
12. What can be learned about Smithsonian Gardens’ 28th orchid show?
A. It focuses on orchids’ symbolic significance. B. It has long been known for its artistic element.
C. It promotes technology use in art. D. It displays both real and artificial flowers.
13. Which aspect of orchids does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. Their biological effects. B. Their environmental sensitivity.
C. Their soil conditions. D. Their healthy growth.
14. What is the underlined word “precarious” in paragraph 4 closest in meaning to?
A. Unlikely. B. Ideal. C. Dangerous. D. Different
15. What does Justin Kondrat want to show by mentioning the National Portrait Gallery?
A. High-standard care for displayed orchids. B. Its cooperation with Smithsonian Gardens.
C. Its contribution to the orchid exhibition. D. Effective techniques for collecting orchids.
D 13. B 14. C 15. A

Students studying history must reflect on the way language is used. They must also look for bias in language used to present historical events. ____18____. They will have a deep understanding of how and why different opinions and perspectives exist.
____19____
History will help your students to develop their data handling and processing skills. They’ll be able to analyze the data in front of them to reach an evidence-based conclusion.
It will make them better at time management.

根据上文“One of the greatest gifts that history gives students is critical thinking. Those on either side often view historical events differently, and students will learn this. And they will learn that even historians looking back on events in the past will have their own biases
根据标题“It will help them to understand the world around them.(它将帮助他们了解周围的世界。)”
根据小标题“It will make them better communicators.(这会让他们成为更好的沟通者。)”可知,本段主要阐述学习历史能够提高沟通能力;前文“Students studying history must reflect on the way language is used. They must also look for bias in language used to present historical events.(学习历史的学生必须反思语言的使用方式。他们还必须寻找用于呈现历史事件的语言中的偏见。)”指出学生在学习历史的过程中要研究语言——“反思语言使用、识别历史表述中的偏见”,D项“这些细致的语言学习能提升学生精准沟通的能力”承接上文,指出语言学习提高沟通能力,符合段落主旨,选项中“These detailed language studies”指代上文中“reflect on the way language is used”以及“look for bias in language used to present historical events”。故选D。
设空处为本段主旨句;根据后文“History will help your students to develop their data handling and processing skills. They’ll be able to analyze the data in front of them to reach an evidence-based conclusion.(历史课程将帮助您的学生提升数据处理和分析能力。
故选A。

A He was angry at the theft. B. He became eager for a new bike.
C. He would rather find his old bike. D. He tried to put himself in the thief’s shoes.
5. Why did Pruitt put out a call?

B. Instant noodles are considered as semi-prepared food.
C. Output value of semi-prepared food is decreasing in China.
D. Semi-prepared food makers enjoy preferential treatment.
11. What is the expert’s attitude towards the regulatory reforms?
A. Unclear. B. Uncaring C. Objective. D. Positive.

Those conditions are maintained year-round at the Smithsonian’s 16000-square-foot greenhouse.
A Their biological effects. B. Their environmental sensitivity.
C. Their soil conditions. D. Their healthy growth.
14. What is the underlined word “precarious” in paragraph 4 closest in meaning to?
A. Unlikely. B. Ideal. C. Dangerous. D. Different
15. What does Justin Kondrat want to show by mentioning the National Portrait Gallery?
A. High-standard care for displayed orchids. B. Its cooperation with Smithsonian Gardens.
C. Its contribution to the orchid exhibition. D. Effective techniques for collecting orchids.
