The bell for lunch rang at Glendale Primary School. However, instead of heading to the canteen like all the other children did, Jonah, a new student at the school, went to the library. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted Mrs Lim, the librarian, who was too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The library was near to the canteen. Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He looked around and saw a pair of eyes looking at him from behind, the bookshelves. Jonah turned back, eyes as wide as saucers (茶碟). “Oh dear!” he whispered. He peeked (窥视) over his shoulder again and saw a smaller boy walking towards him.
The boy pulled out the chair next to Jonah and sat down. “I’m Henry. Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead?” asked he. “Uh...” Jonah looked around the library avoiding Henry’s gaze (注视). He did not want Henry to know the real reason why he was in the library. What would Henry think of him if he knew Jonah did not have any friends? It would make Jonah feel more uncomfortable.
As Jonah turned the page, he realized Henry was still sitting there, watching him steadily.
“I know how you feel. Just say hello to someone today,” Henry encouraged Jonah. “I promise they’ll respond. Once you’ve made the first move, it just gets easier.”
Jonah appreciated the advice and thanked him before making his way out of the library. In the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class was crouched on the floor, picking up pens and pencils that had dropped out of his pencil case. Jonah remembered what Henry had advised him to do.
“Hello, I’m Jonah. Let me help you,” he offered.
The boy looked up at him. “Thank you! My name is Ruben.”
Victory at last, Jonah thought, feeling proud of himself.
4. What can we know from the text?

A. He turned too quickly and felt a little dizzy.
B He was shocked by the pair of eyes peeking at him.
C. He was too thin because of lacking enough nutrition.
D. He didn’t expect the smaller boy would come to him.
6. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jonah’s not having any friends in the school.
B Henry’s impoliteness in asking the question.
C. Jonah’s shyness after he found Henry’s gaze.
D. Henry’s thought of Jonah if he knew Jonah’s real situation.

Monica is a professional doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Growing up in Wyoming, she was well aware of the lack of health care resources in countrysides. Access to in-depth health care for cancer (癌症) patients is hard to get. She’s worked throughout her life to change that.
In Wyoming, there’s a great distance to travel between where people live and where they can find a cancer doctor. “If you need treatments and they have to be done every day, and if it’s 120 miles from where you live, it is very hard to receive the kind of care you need.”
And now Monica serves as the president of the Coalition (联盟) of Cancer Cooperative Groups (CCCG) — an international network of individuals who work to improve the quality of life and survival of cancer patients by taking part in cancer clinical trials more.
She said, “One of the important things is that we’re trying to make sure cancer clinical trials can reach every single patient who needs them in my own state.” The coalition set up sites in northern and southern Wyoming that are able to run clinical trials. Before those trials, patients would usually go to Denver or Salt Lake City — a three-to-seven-hour drive.
Monica’s efforts to increase access to the health care needs of her patients also include helping to develop new policies that will allow patients to take part in more clinical trials, and linking them with a regional doctor who can get them the access to the care they need.
Besides the clinical trials, Monica said that technology’s progress like better cell phone and internet service in the mountains of Wyoming, as well as social media, has helped local people stay in touch with medical professionals despite their distance. She will continue to support those changes.
“I still consider myself part of Wyoming and I am very devoted to making sure that patients can get access to health care.”
8. What do cancer patients in the countrysides of Wyoming need most?
A. Better housing. B. Complete health care.
C. Further education. D. Public transportation.
9. How has Monica helped the cancer patients?
A. By offering clinical trials. B. By supporting financial aid.
C. By improving internet service. D. By training medical professionals.
10. Which of the following can best describe Monica?
A. Determined and creative. B. Honest and generous.
C. Grateful and courageous. D. Devoted and responsible.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Technology: A push for progress B. Monica: A helper for cancer patients
C. CCCG: A pioneer for cancer treatment D. Clinical trials: A hope for cancer patients
D
Greasy spoon cafés or simply greasy spoons very rarely appear in guidebooks, but they are an essential part of life in the UK, especially for people living in the bigger cities. These small restaurants are so common — like baked beans or phone boxes — that they are barely even noticed, but if greasy spoons were removed, the country would be on its knees.
Greasy spoon cafés are so called because any cutlery ( 餐具) that comes into contact with the food on offer is immediately coated with a sticky layer of oil. It almost seems like an oily mist hangs in the air, as if fat drips (滴下) from the walls. More calories can be found in a cup of tea in a good greasy spoon than in a whole meal at a normal restaurant.
Greasy spoons are generally found slightly away from the main streets of most towns. They usually have large (grease coated) glass windows a plastic sign with the café name and a huge menu offering a wide variety of foods. Inside they are generally clean and functional. You’ll see old wooden seats, tables and plain walls. Each table has on it a bottle of brown sauce, tomato ketchup and vinegar, and pots of salt and pepper.
In a typical greasy spoon, you will find people from all walks of life: poets, hurrying businessmen, students lazing around with huge cups of tea. Some read novels, some stare into space, and others catch up on the day’s news. At weekends there will always be large groups of friends, recovering from a night on the town. They are all united by one thing: the food. They are all looking for an absolutely substantial meal.
The meals are dangerously unhealthy, and absolutely delicious. All kinds of food can be bought for incredibly low prices. Greasy spoons have some devoted followers. Tapping “Greasy Spoon” into an internet search engine will bring up hundreds of entries — with pictures, reviews, menus and stories. But of course, nothing can beat going to a real one — especially on an empty stomach.
12. What does the underlined phrase “on its knees” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Better off. B. Quite clean.
C. Greatly changed. D. Nearly destroyed.
13. What is the reason for greasy spoon cafés getting their name?
A. Their origin is related to an oil producer. B. They mainly serve food with a spoon.
C. Their food contains too much oil. D. They use a special kind of spoon.
14. What can we learn about customers of greasy spoons?
A. They are always in a hurry. B. They often spend a night there.
C. They go there between meals. D. They are from various backgrounds.
15. What do we know about greasy spoons?
A. They need more publicity. B. Their food is cheap and delicious.
C. They are decorated in a modern way. D. They are located in the main streets.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations (做演讲). Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears sh one in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon (丝带) winner. It wasn’t easy at first — not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Uh...” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding Henry’s gaze (注视).

C. Grateful and courageous. D. Devoted and responsible.

They usually have large (grease coated) glass windows, a plastic sign with the café name and a huge menu offering a wide variety of foods.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. B

Body language also varies from culture to culture. For example, people in some countries kiss each other when they meet, but men in China shake hands instead of kissing.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Hearing Momma’s words Niesha looked at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She imagined the scene where her momma tried her best to overcome her fears and pluck up her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. Perceiving Neisha’s anxiety, Momma reassured her and reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a disarming smile. Restored and determined, she gritted her teeth to find her courage. In front of the mirror parked Neisha continuously practicing from pronunciation to tone, even gesture. “Try harder,” she perked herself up when drowsiness fell upon her.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Shy, she customarily lowered her head and averted her gaze, numb there for seconds. Shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, summoned up her courage, “Dear fellow students, ...” Niesha cast a glance at Mr. Roberts standing in the corner smiling at her. A self-reassuring smile spread across Niesha’s face. She knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.
