The night of the horse
The soldier came down the stairs—two at a time. ‘Captain, they’ve gone,’ he cried. ‘They’ve d 1 —all of them. The plain is …” But the captain was no longer listening. He was going up the stairs—three at a time.
Seconds later, the captain stood on the high wall of the city of Troy. He looked d 2 at the empty plain and, beyond it, at the empty sea. ‘They’ve gone and we’ve w 3 ,’ he said. ‘The Greeks have tried for ten years to capture our city. Now they’ve sailed away. And they’ve taken everything with them.’
‘Not everything, sir,’ the soldier said. ‘They’ve left their horse.’ Outside the main gates of the city stood a huge wooden horse.
‘Ah, yes,’ the captain said, ‘that wooden horse. It’s so big that they couldn’t take it with them. Well, it’s ours now. Get some help and pull it into the city. That won’t be d 4 . It’s on wheels.’
‘But why is it on wheels?’ the soldier asked. ‘I think that maybe the Greeks want us to …’
The captain i 5 him. ‘You’re a soldier,’ he said. ‘You don’t have to think. You have to obey orders, and I’m giving you o 6 now. Move that horse.’ So the Trojans dragged it into the city with ropes.
That night, in the main square, all the citizens of Troy celebrated. They sang and danced around the horse, and made jokes about their e 7 , the stupid Greeks. Then the Trojans made sure all the gates of the city were securely locked, and they all went to sleep, i 8 the gate guards.
By midnight, the square was empty, except for the giant horse. The six Greek soldiers waited for another hour, to be sure. Then, very q 9 , they opened the secret door on the side of the horse and climbed out.
No guards s 10 them as they opened the main gates. Outside stood the Greek army. It had returned in the darkness when the citizens were celebrating inside.
Now the army entered the city. The Greeks seized the captain. For ten years, they could not capture the city by fighting, but in one night, they succeeded in capturing it through a trick.

Many of us now live in gated communities. Only people who lived there can go freely inside, and only their cars can pass through the gates. But are you hoping for a more open and convenient environment? When gates and walls are gone, everyone can enjoy a city with better traffic, bigger green areas for picnics and more cafes and bookstores to meet your friends.
Turning gated communities into blocks is one way to achieve this, according to the Chinese government. On Feb 21, China stated that gated communities should be open to the public.
Open communities have already become popular in many cities of other countries, like Paris, France and New York City, US. There, the roads, shops and green areas are for everyone.
“Humans need communication and sharing. A good city
needs to offer people enough space to do this,” said Wang Weiqiang, an urban planning expert from Tongji University.
Another good change blocks may bring is better traffic in cities, according to Professor Li Hongchang from Beijing Jiaotong Universtiy. There will be more roads open to the public. And more people may choose to walk rather than drive cars because they don’t need to take a long way to get around those gated communities.
However, not everyone likes the idea of open communities. Quite a lot of people say they have spent money on the roads inside the communities, and they worry about safety problems when communities are open.
The Chinese government explained that the opening would be carried out step by step and more detailed(详细的) plans would come out in the future. Also, they have been testing blocks in some areas in Chengdu, Sichuan, and so far it has been working well.

Improper food preparation in people’s houses can cause illnesses. A recent study has found that the kitchen supplies can easily spread bacteria( 细 菌 ) between foods at 1 . This is because some produce items(农产品) that contain bacteria may pollute other produce items through the continued use of knives or forks. That is to say the bacteria often land on the kitchen supplies and other surfaces in people’s houses and spread to the next items. “ 2 , many people are unaware that the kitchen supplies can have something to do with the spread of bacteria,” said the study’s lead author Marilyn Erickson, a professor in
the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
In the lab, Erickson first pollutes some fruits and vegetables by 3 certain bacteria such as salmonella(沙门菌) and E.coli(大肠杆菌). Then using a certain knife, she cut those fruits and vegetables. Then, she cut things like tomatoes to see how easily the bacteria could spread 4 the knife was used again and again without being cleaned. She found that the knife had the transfer of bacteria to and from produce items. The more items she cut or peeled with the knife even though they were clean at first, the more polluted items she had in the kitchen. Knives aren’t the only things in the kitchen that people should be 5 . Erickson also studies the forks, brushes, basins, dishcloth and other things used in the kitchen that can spread dangerous kitchen bacteria. Researchers ask people to realize that it is 6 to avoid cross-pollution by washing the kitchen tools between uses.
