学情分析:本节课授课对象为高一重点班学生,男女生比例相当,学生基础普遍较好,拥有较好地听说读写能力,大部分学生拥有较好的自主学习能力,及自我总结反思能力。

Teaching aims:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Knowledge aim:
1) master some words of the lesson: potential, senior, path, challenge, thinking, positive, opportunity, acquire, effort, advance, amazing, confidence, resource, facility, equal, attitude, goal, balance, improve, well-rounded, individual, character, responsible.
2) Master the use of some important phrases: lie in, rise to, make a difference, make the most of, take advantage of, last but not least, look forward to, as a result of, stick to, over time.
3)get to know the rhetorical device of parallelism.
2. Ability aim:
1) read and understand a speech given by the principal of the new senior high school.
2) improve their reading comprehension ability.
3) summarize the outline and the theme of the speech by skimming for topic sentences and scanning for details.
3. Emotion aim:
1) adapt to a new environment of school life.
2) evaluate the importance of realizing one’s potential and design personal action plans for realizing one’s potential.

Step1 Revision (3 min)
1. To read the new words and expressions learned last period to prepare for the reading part.
2. To ask one student to read the words to check whether they can read each word, correct the pronunciation as well.
(设计意图:及时复习所学单词和短语,温故而知新,激发学生思维,让学生快速进入课堂学习状态。)
Step2 Lead in(5 min)
1.Divide Ss into three groups.
2. Ask Ss to talk about their feelings about their new school life and think about the differences between junior high school and senior high school , which cover various aspects of school life(study, relationship, condition and school activities ). Then work in groups to have a discussion about it. The teacher can show some pictures to offer some clues.
1. How do you feel about your new school life?
2. How do you think senior high school will be different from junior high school?
(Senior high school is a time of learning and discovery. It brings a lot of experiences to everyone.)
(设计意图:利用情境对比激发学生兴趣,自然引出学习任务,学生进行讨论的过程也是自主合作学习的体现。)
3. Watch a video about a speech given by a senior high school’s principal on the first day of term. Then ask Ss what’s happening in the video to lead to the topic : a principal’s speech. After that the teacher directs students’ attention to the title of the speech: Realizing your potential and explains to the students that the text is also a speech given by a principal of senior high school on the first day of term.
(设计意图:利用高中开学校长演讲的视频引出本节课主题:speech,顺理成章地导入本节课的阅读任务。)
Step3 Presentation(30 min)
1. Pre-reading(5 min)
1)Before reading, the teacher explain the title of the passage: Realizing your potential (发挥你的潜力)and ask Ss to think about the following question and ask them to predict the main content of the principal’s speech according to the title and given information.
b. What do you think the principal will talk about in his speech?
2) Give Ss several minutes to work in groups to have a discussion.
3) Ask two of them to share their opinions.
(设计意图:基于标题的细节与背景信息,预测文章主要内容,引发阅读兴趣,为本课后续活动埋下伏笔。 )
2. While reading(20 min)
1)Read for the first time to find the topic sentence for each paragraph.Tip
Finding topic sentences: A topic sentence tells the reader the main idea of a paragraph. It is usually at the beginning of a paragraph, but it may also be in the middle or at the end of a paragraph.
a. The teacher plays the tape of the text: Realizing your potential and Ss are asked to read for the first time to finish task A1 to find the topic sentence for each paragraph. Students need to read the tip of “Finding topic sentences” on Page 4 and find the topic sentence by skimming the speech while listening to the tape, and finish A1 on the same page. During the feedback, the teacher can help students understand some new words and expressions.
b. Choosing game! There are six paragraphs in the text, and six students are needed to give their answers one by one. The teacher shows on the screen the rules of the guessing game: the teacher says one two three go, the Ss put their hands up, the quickest one comes to the blackboard to choose a picture, kick it and gives the topic sentences of the paragraph he chose. Let other Ss write down the topic sentences on their textbooks.

2.利用游戏让学生盲选段落继而说出对应段落中心句,增加了课堂竞争性和趣味性,学生更加集中注意力,能更高效地完成课堂任务。)
2) Read for the second time to finish task A2.
The teacher asks each student to read the text carefully again. Students locate detailed information by scanning the speech and finish A2 on Page 4. Ss are given three minutes to discuss the questions and then share their answers.
1. What challenges will students face at senior high school?
2. What does the principal have confidence in?
3. What school resources are mentioned in the speech?
4. What positive attitude should students develop?
(While reading, students are encouraged to use a dictionary if they come across any new words.)
(设计意图:进一步梳理细节信息,提取有关文章主旨的基本事实性信息,理清行文脉络,加深理解本篇演讲的意图。鼓励学生阅读过程中对于遇到的生单词可以进行查字典解决,培养学生自主学习能力。)
3)Read for the third time to get the outline of the speech.
Students read through the text again, discuss in pairs and complete the outline of the speech using a mind map.
During discussion, students should identify what message the principal wants to convey and summarize the main idea of the speech.

The main idea of the speech: In this speech, the principal mainly encourage the new students to discover their potential and tells them the ways to realize it.

3.Post reading(5 min)
Ask Ss to work in pairs discuss two questions to finish task A3. Ss can refer to the tip of understanding a speech on page 4.
1) How does the principal try to keep his audience interested? What rhetorical devices does he use? Find examples from the speech.Tip
A speech is a formal talk that a person gives to an audience. A good speech keeps the audience interested all the time. To achieve this, the speaker may tell interesting stories or ask questions. A good speech also uses quotations and such rhetorical devices as metaphor, repetition and parallelism.
2) How are you going to realize your potential?
Explain the definition of parallelism and give a sentence of text as an example.
Eg: Today is the start of a new term, the start of a three-year journey and the start of a promising future.
(设计意图:阅读任务完成后,进一步思考演讲的技巧,以及如何发挥自己的潜力,将课堂阅读任务再次升华。)
Step 4 Summary and homework(5 min)
1. The teacher summarizes the outline of the speech given by the principal, and emphasizes the speech requirements.
2. Ask Ss to go through the text again and to finish task B after class.
3. To go through the text and underline the sentences using parallelism.
(设计意图:总结课堂主要内容,构建系统知识框架,同时根据学生所学内容,合理布置课后任务,巩固所学的同时为下节课内容的展开做准备。)
