My name is Reuben Kozary, and I’m a student from Australia. I was lucky enough to have the chance to travel to Shanghai for a one-month exchange (交换) program at East China Normal University (华东师大) in the summer of 2023.
We received a warm welcome on the first day, and the teachers showed us around the beautiful campus (校园). After the tour, we enjoyed a delicious meal on campus.
Our language classes were taught in Chinese, and our teacher didn’t allow us to speak any English. “If I catch you speaking English more than five times, you’ll have to buy ice cream for the whole class.” she said with a smile. This was challenging at first, but in the end, my listening and speaking skills improved much faster than they did when I studied in Australia.
Life outside the classroom was just as fun. The shopping center stayed open until 10 p.m. every night, and there were many restaurants, museums, and other popular places nearby. All of these were just a 15-20 minute subway ride away. Besides traveling around Shanghai after class, we spent our last day visiting the headquarters (总部) of a Chinese company (公司).
Although I’ve been away from Shanghai for nearly two years, this program truly changed my life. I will continue studying Chinese so that I can use my language skills in my future job.

Sophia Collins and Emy Jacobo have been best friends since they were kids. “I play with Emy outside a lot,” Sophia says. “We both like reading and doing art together.” The two friends like to work together to help others, too. They even wrote a book together.
The project (项目) started when Sophia and Emy had free time in their first-grade class. They decided to create (创作) a book for Sophia’s younger brother, Sam, and Emy’s younger sisters, Kielyn and Lia. “We made the book to help them read,” Emy explains.

After Sophia’s mom helped print the book, the girls sold over 60 copies to their family and friends. They raised $315 and sent it to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Saihanba is a forest park in the north of Hebei. It is about 300 km from Beijing. “Saihan” means “beautiful” and “ba” means “highlands”, so Saihanba means “beautiful highlands”. For hundreds of years, the emperors (皇帝) went there to hunt (打猎). But in the 1800s, things began to change. Because of forest fires, wars and the cutting down of trees, Saihanba slowly turned into a desert.

Until one day, an old tree in the middle of the desert made them come up with an idea. “Maybe we can still plant trees here.” they thought. In 1962, the first tree planters arrived at Saihanba. The cold and dry weather made their work very difficult, and strong winds blew away many young trees. In winter, temperatures dropped as low as -40℃. Even with these difficulties, three generations (代) of forest workers continued the hard work. Thanks to them, Saihanba became green again. It is the world’s largest man-made forest today. In 2007, the government named Saihanba as one of the most important national nature parks in China. In 2017, Saihanba received the Champions (卫士) of the Earth Award (奖). In 2021, it received the Land for Life Award from the UN Environment Programme.
Now, Saihanba is home to hundreds of millions of trees. The forest offers clean water to Beijing and has helped cut down on sandstorms in the area. Every year, especially in summer and autumn, more and more tourists come to Saihanba to enjoy the beauty of its forest. It also becomes home to different plants and wild animals.

My name is Reuben Kozary, and I’m a student from Australia. I was lucky enough to have the chance to travel to Shanghai for a one-month exchange (交换) program at East China Normal University (华东师大) in the summer of 2023.
We received a warm welcome on the first day, and the teachers showed us around the beautiful campus (校园). After the tour, we enjoyed a delicious meal on campus.
