At first, I thought it would be easy. But on my way home, the “baby” suddenly (突然) cried. Her cry was so loud that everyone looked at me. I felt very shy. At last, I calmed down (使冷静下来) my “baby” by rocking (摇晃) her for a long time. My arms and back hurt. She cried many times while I did homework at home. I always tried to calm her down, even at 3:30 am.

17. It’s important to be ________ honest and polite person in both school life and social life.
A. a B. the C. an
18. —John, what are you going to do tomorrow?
—I’m going to play basketball in the park if it ________.
A. rains B. won’t rain C. doesn’t rain

fix them up修好它们;fix up it语法错误;fix it up修理好它。根据空处前文“Jack, one of the lights in our classroom doesn’t work.”
21. A smile costs ________, but gives so much.
A. nothing B. something C. everything
【答案】A

Entering Chocolate Ballerina Company, you’ll be surprised to find all its ballet (芭蕾舞) dancers are black. Yes, Chocolate Ballerina Company is a ballet school for black students. Chanel Holland set up the school in 2017.
Chanel is an African American and she grew up in Philadelphia, America. Chanel showed great interest in ballet at a very young age. At that time, she always went to the local libraries to rent (租) ballet tapes. Later, she began learning ballet at some dance schools in New York City. In 2012, she graduated from Temple University.
Before Chanel, there were very few black ballet dancers. Lots of people thought that no black people could dance ballet. Chanel remembered that when she learned to dance at a ballet school, she was told that she didn’t belong there because of her black skin. After finishing college, Chanel worked as a dance teacher. In 2017, she returned to Philadelphia and created Chocolate Ballerina Company with the hope of offering black artists more chances.
Chocolate Ballerina Company provides low-cost or even free dance classes for black artists who look for professional training. All the students there wear dark-coloured dance clothes. The company’s newest show was Black Swan. On June 4th, 2023, the black dancers of the company performed it for the first time and it received warm cheers.

Once upon a time there lived a poor farmer called Smith. He didn’t like to share things with others. Smith had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apples he grew.

He thought and thought. Finally at night he planted the tree in his wood where no one could see it. But without sunlight and good soil, the tree soon died.
Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.
“What’s the difference?” The farmer said angrily. “If I had planted it near the road, strangers would have stolen (偷) the fruit. If I had planted it in one of my fields, my neighbors would have come at night and stolen some of the apples. If I had planted it near my house, my own children would have taken the fruit.”
“Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit. Now you not only have got nothing, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree.
