V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead - in (5 minutes)
Ask: “What fun things do you do at school? Share with your partner.” Give 2 minutes for pair discussion. Invite 2 - 3 students to share, activating interest and leading to the lesson.
Step 2 While - learning (20 minutes)
1a (5 minutes)
Students list their favourite places in their school, then share with a partner. Walk around to assist with vocabulary (e.g., “library”, “playground”) and encourage detailed descriptions like “My favourite place is the library because it's quiet.”.
1b (5 minutes)
Students skim Peter's reply to Flora's email and choose the question Flora probably asked in her last email. After students finish, check answers and explain: Peter's email describes his new school (“It's very beautiful. There are many modern buildings.”), so Flora likely asked “What's your new school like?”, so the answer is A.
1c (5 minutes)
Students read the email again and identify what the words “beautiful”, “modern”, “large”, “big and clean”, “delicious” describe. Check answers: “beautiful” describes the school; “modern” describes buildings; “large” describes the sports field; “big and clean” describes the classroom; “delicious” describes jiaozi.
1d (5 minutes)
Students discuss the questions about Peter's school:
Students in Peter's school go to the sports field to do exercise together in the morning.
Peter sits next to his best friend, Han Lin this week.
The dining hall is Peter's favourite place because there are many kinds of delicious food.
Guide students to compare with their own school, e.g., “Peter's school has a large sports field, and our school also has a big sports field.”.
Walk around to assist and invite 2 pairs to share.
Step 3 Post - learning (15 minutes)
2a (7 minutes)
Students think about places in their school and complete the notes:
Places in my school: library, playground, art room...
My favourite place: library
Where it is: It's next to the classroom building.
Why I like it: Because it's quiet and I can read many books there.
What I like to do there: I like to read storybooks there.
Walk around to help with sentence structure, e.g., “Where it is” can be answered with “It's in front of...”.
2b (8 minutes)
Students imagine a friend from another country sent an email about their school and write a reply using the template:
To: friend@example.com
From: yourname@example.com
Dear [Friend's Name],
Thank you for your email. Your school sounds fun! I'd like to tell you about my school. There are many interesting places here. They're the library, the playground, and the art room. My favourite place is the library. It's quiet and full of books. I love it because I can read different stories there. I like to spend my free time reading there.
Bye for now,
[Your Name]
Walk around to provide feedback, checking for correct use of descriptive adjectives and “There is/are...”.
Step 6 Summary (3 minutes)
Summary: Recap descriptive adjectives (beautiful, modern, etc.), key sentences “There is/are...”, “I like... because...”, and how to write an email about school. Write on the blackboard:
Descriptive adjectives: beautiful, modern, large, delicious...
Key sentences: There is/are...; I like... because...
Email structure: Greeting → Introduce school → Talk about favourite place → Reason → Closing.
Step 7 Homework (2 minutes)
Homework:
Polish the email reply in 2b and share it with a classmate.
Draw a picture of your favourite school place and write a short paragraph about it using descriptive adjectives (e.g., “The library is big and bright. I like it because...”).
