Unit 3 My School Grammar Focus (3a - 3d)教学设计
I. Teaching Aims
Knowledge Aims
Students can master the there be structure (affirmative, negative, interrogative forms) and prepositions of position: “behind”, “next to”, “across from”, “between”, “in front of”.
Students can use the there be structure and prepositions correctly to describe the positions of school places and classroom items.
Ability Aims
Students can enhance reading skills by identifying there be verbs and prepositions in sentences.
Students can improve writing skills by completing sentences with the correct there be forms and prepositions.
Students can develop speaking skills by comparing their classroom with the one in the photo using the there be structure and prepositions.
Emotional Aims
Students can appreciate the diversity of classroom environments and feel confident in describing their own learning space.
II. Teaching Key Points and Difficult Points
Key Points
Correct use of the there be structure (matching be verbs with subjects).
Accurate application of prepositions of position to describe locations.
Difficult Points
Choosing the correct be verb (is/are) in the there be structure.
Using prepositions appropriately to express precise positions.
III. Teaching Methods
Task - based Teaching Method: Design reading, writing, and speaking tasks to help students master grammar and prepositions.
Interactive Teaching Method: Encourage students to interact through pair work and class discussions.
Inductive Teaching Method: Guide students to discover grammar rules by analyzing examples.
IV. Teaching Aids
Multimedia courseware (with sentence examples, classroom photos).
Sentence strips for practice.
V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Review (5 minutes)
Show pictures of school places (library, classroom building, etc.) and ask: “Where is the library? Use prepositions to describe.” Let students answer using “It's behind/next to...”.
Review the there be structure by asking: “Is there a gym in our school? Are there any lockers in your classroom?” and have students respond.
Step 2 3a: Identifying Verbs and Prepositions (8 minutes)
Ask students to read the sentences in 3a. Instruct them to underline verbs in the there be structure and circle prepositions of position.
Walk around to check. Then, invite students to share their underlined and circled parts. For example, “In 'Where is the library? It is behind the classroom building.', 'is' is underlined, and 'behind' is circled.”
Summarize the there be verbs (is, are) and prepositions (behind, next to, across from, between, in front of).
Step 3 3b: Completing Sentences (10 minutes)
Explain the task: Complete the sentences with correct there be forms and context - appropriate words.
Do the first sentence as a model: “A: Where __ the lockers? B: __ next to the reading corner.” Elicit answers: “are”; “They're”.
Let students work individually to finish the rest. Walk around to assist, especially with be verb choice.
Check answers as a class, asking students to explain their choices (e.g., “For 'There __ a nice library behind the classroom building.', we use 'is' because 'a nice library' is singular.”).
Step 4 3c: Choosing Prepositions (10 minutes)
Show the classroom photo. Read the description aloud once.
Ask students to circle correct prepositions to complete the description. Remind them to refer to the photo.
After students finish, check answers one by one. For each preposition, ask: “Why did you choose 'in front of' here? (Point to the screen and wall in the photo.)” to ensure understanding.
Step 5 3d: Comparing Classrooms (7 minutes)
Explain the task: Talk about how your classroom is different from the one in 3c, using the there be structure and prepositions.
Model with a student: “A: In our classroom, there are some plants next to the teacher's desk. B: And there's a blackboard in our classroom.”
Have students work in pairs. Walk around to provide support, encouraging them to use varied prepositions and detailed descriptions.
Invite 2 - 3 pairs to share their conversations with the class.
Step 6 Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary: Recap the there be structure (is/are for singular/plural) and prepositions of position. Emphasize matching be verbs to subjects and using prepositions accurately.
Homework:
Write a short paragraph describing your classroom using the there be structure and at least three prepositions.
Draw a map of your school and label 5 places, then write sentences about their positions (e.g., “There is a library next to the classroom building.”).
