III. Teaching Procedures
1. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Activity: Show some pictures of students' daily interactions with friends (e.g., studying together, playing sports). Ask students: “Who are these people in the pictures? Do you have good friends? What do you usually do with your friends?”
Purpose: Arouse students' interest in the topic of friendship and activate their prior knowledge.
2. Presentation (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching:
Present the new words (helpful, honest, cheerful, humorous, caring) one by one. For “helpful”, use an example like “A helpful friend will help you carry books.”; for “honest”, say “An honest friend always tells the truth.” Use simple definitions and example sentences. Let students repeat the words after you, paying attention to pronunciation.
Do a quick vocabulary drill: Say the Chinese meaning, and students say the English word, and vice versa.
Sentence Pattern Introduction:
Write the sentence pattern “What do you think makes good friends?” and “I think good friends should be...” on the blackboard. Explain that it's used to discuss opinions about friend qualities. Give examples, such as “What do you think makes good friends? I think good friends should be cheerful.”
3. Practice (15 minutes)
Task A Practice:
Let students do Task A individually first. They match the qualities with the explanations. Then check the answers together as a class. For each answer, ask a student to explain why, e.g., “Why is ‘honest’ matched with ‘Tell the truth’? Because an honest person tells the truth.”
Pair - work for Task B:
Divide students into pairs. Let them practice the conversation model in Task B. Encourage them to use the new vocabulary and make substitutions. For example, they can use other qualities like “clever” “friendly” etc. Walk around the classroom to offer help with pronunciation and expression.
Select 2 - 3 pairs to perform their conversations in front of the class. Give positive feedback and correct minor mistakes.
4. Production (10 minutes)
Class Discussion:
Raise the question “What other qualities do you think are important for good friends?” Let students think and then share their ideas in class. Guide them to use the learned words and sentence patterns, such as “I think good friends should also be respectful. They respect my opinions.”
For Task C, ask students to think about their own qualities as friends. Then invite some students to share with the class, using the sentence “I think I have the quality of... as a friend. For example, I am helpful because I often help my friends with their homework.”
5. Summary (3 minutes)
