Dear Jackson,
I am delighted to inform you that our school will hold an English speech contest in the lecture hall from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm next Friday, whose topic is “The key to getting along with classmates” and I sincerely invite you to participate in it.

Li Hua
Callie spent the rest of the evening thinking about her decision. She wanted to go to Fun World, but in the end she decided that her promise to her neighbor was more important. The next day at school, Callie told Tamara that she would not be able to go to Fun World. Tamara tried to understand, but Callie could tell Tamara was disappointed. The girls hardly spoke for the rest of the week.
On Sunday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot. “Your mother said you had made a tough choice. Thank you for giving a hand today.” Callie smiled as she cleaned with a large trash bag. “Do you need any help?” a voice behind her asked. Callie turned, surprised to see Tamara. “I know you made a promise to clean up the garden, and I wanted to come help you. My mom said she could take us to Fun World this weekend.” With joint efforts, they finished the cleaning. Both Callie and Tamara realized that once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.

Bring the beauty of native birds into your home
with unique artwork by Pam McGrath
Australia and its offshore islands and territories have 898 recorded bird species as of 2014. Of the recorded birds, 165 are considered accidental visitors, of the remainder over 45% are classified as Australian endemics: found nowhere else on earth. It has been suggested that up to 10% of Australian bird species may go extinct by the year 2100 as a result of climate change.
Artist Pam McGrath expresses her lifetime concern for wildlife conservation through these acrylic paintings of Australian birds. While celebrating their beauty and diversity, the birds are presented in abstract design with straight lines, rather than the delicate natural form, to suggest the challenges of their adaption to environmental change.

I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Before selling my car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold.
Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode If I am honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back and enjoyed my ride.
But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was entirely enjoyable. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. I have to say, this sensation made me happier and healthier.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and well-being.
24.What did the author originally think of letting go of his car?
A.A healthy move. B.A difficult choice.
C.A call of duty. D.A crowd-driven decision.
25.How did the author feel about the actual experience of riding to work?
A.Confused. B.Embarrassed. C.Anxious. D.Amazed.
26.What does the underlined part “this sensation” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Interest in exploring new routes. B.Desire to head home faster.
C.Relief from work pressure. D.Love for exposure to nature.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.E-bike will replace cars very soon.
B.Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
C.Cities need a more inclusive transport network.
D.The Model T will be back quickly.

Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive (冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’meaning for the younger generation.
A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best never used in any situation as it is “hurtful”. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they're mad-at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.
“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don't know why, but it seemed a little bit aggressive to me,”one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I've read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”
Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”
Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old”if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.
28.What does the thumbs-up emoji mean to Gen Z according to the text?
A.It shows agreement. B.It is considered rude or hurtful.

In Mexico, a chinampa is an island that was built up by the native Aztec people with mud from the bottom of a lake that surrounds their capital. One of these areas is called Xochimiloo.
Food grown on the islands in Xochimilco has fed people for hundreds of years, but the chinampas here are under threat from urbanization. Many families are giving up the ancient practice to rent out or sell their land for more profitable uses such as soccer fields and tourism. “If you do well in farming, you could earn $5,000 to S10.000 a year,” one local landowner said. “In the tourist area, you could have that within a couple of weekends.”
Some of those remaining, like Cassandra Garduño, are banding together to promote the traditional use of the chinampas. When her grandfather died in 2010 and her uncles didn’t want to carry on, Garduño took it upon herself to learn farming. She bought land from a friend’s uncle in 2020 and grew kinds of produce, including sunflowers and eggplants. Now 32-year-old Garduño is one member of the growing organization called Chinampo Refuge, and she and other members encourage local people to protect their land. They follow ancient growing techniques but are trying new commercial approaches to compete with cheaper produce grown on massive farms elsewhere in Mexico. That includes a special label-Etiqueta Chinampera, which tells buyers the produce came from a chinampa.
Luis Zambrano, an ecologist who has worked in Xochimilco for decades, says fed and watered by the lake, the fields can produce three to five crops of vegetables a year without the need for chemicals. But now, on weekends, it’s common to see more soccer players boating to islands than farmers tending their crops. Over the past two to three years, there has been a massive increase in the number of soccer fields on the islands. “It doesn’t look that harmful because there’s no construction,” says Zambrano. “But it’s just as damaging because of the amount of chemicals that are used, and the amount of pollution that is generated.”
32.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.The chinampas have benefited from urbanization.
B.Many farmers are using new farming technology.
C.Farming affects the environment in Mexico badly.
D.Farming is less profitable than tourism in Xochimilco.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Garduno?
A.Her relationship with her family.
B.The trouble she had in buying land.
C.Her efforts to protect agricultural land.
D.The challenges she met when learning farming.
34.What is the purpose of using Etiqueta Chinampera?
A.To show the date of production.
B.To indicate the food origin.
C.To tell the price of the food.
D.To explain the cooking method.
35.What is Zambrano’s attitude to building soccer fields on chinampas?
A.Positive. B.Unconcerned.
C.Disapproving. D.Unclear.
Nowadays more and more young athletes are taking part in the risky, adventurous activities called “extreme sports” or “X-sports”. Its philosophy is to get as close to the edge as possible.
In the past young athletes would play hockey or baseball. Today, they want risk and excitement — the closer to the edge, the better. 36 They windsurf near hurricane, go white-water rafting through rapids, and bungee-jump from towers.
37 A city kid who couldn’t afford expensive sports equipment could get a skateboard and have fun. But now it has become a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There is even a special Olympics for extreme sports, called the Winter X-game, which includes snow mountain biking and climbing. 38 It features sports such as sky surfing, where people jump from airplanes with surfboard attached to their feet.
39 “People love the excitement,” says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment. “City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hurt.” An athlete adds, “Sure there’s a risk, but that’s part of the appeal.”
Now even the older crowd is starting to join in. Every weekend, groups of friends in their early 30s get together. On weekdays, they work as computer programmers in the same office. On Sundays they rent mountain bikes and ride down steep mountains together.
Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. Most people still prefer to play basketball or watch sports on TV. 40
A.An Extreme Games competition is held each summer in Rhode Island.
B.What makes extreme sports so popular?
C.Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expensive sports such as golf.
D.What are the risks in Extreme sports?
E.But it has been a fact that extreme sports are gaining popularity.
F.They snowboard over cliffs and mountain-bike down steep mountains.
G.Extreme sports bring us both excitement and risks.

Callie was a high school student. Because of her parents’ business, her family moved from London to Los Angeles, where she grew up.
Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was very interested in various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.
On a sunny afternoon, Callie was reading a poem when she heard a soft knock. She stood up at once and opened the door. Her favourite neighbor, Mrs. Baker, stood outside the door.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said, “and do you know the empty lot (场地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. “The place is a mess, covered with trash. The city is letting us use the lot as a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.” “Sure, Mrs. Baker!” Callie said cheerfully. “I just have nothing to do this Saturday. I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have had a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s close friend Tamara was waiting for her by their classroom, who had a surprise for her. Tamara said, “My mom bought tickets to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the amusement park to reopen.
Callie sighed and worried over how to choose for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked. Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mom?” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also want to help Mrs. Baker. Think carefully about your choice, and you need to make your own decision. But I know you will do what is best,” her mother answered.

根据第一段“Of the recorded birds, 165 are considered accidental visitors, of the remainder over 45% are classified as Australian endemics: found nowhere else on earth. (在有记录的鸟类中,165种被视为偶见鸟类,剩余鸟类中有超过45%被归类为澳大利亚特有物种:即在地球上其他任何地方都没有分布)”可知,剩余鸟类中超过45%为澳大利亚特有物种,在地球上其他地方找不到,这表明有大量鸟类仅存在于澳大利亚。故选B项。
22.细节理解题。根据第二段“Artist Pam McGrath expresses her lifetime concern for wildlife conservation through these acrylic paintings of Australian birds. (艺术家帕姆・麦格拉思通过这些澳大利亚鸟类的丙烯酸画作,表达了她对野生动物保护的毕生关注)”可知,帕姆・麦格拉思通过画作表达对野生动物保护的终身关注。故选D项

B
根据第一段中“I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago.
根据第二段中“I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold. (我骑车时戴手套,穿暖和的袜子和滑雪服,所以我几乎从不觉得太冷)”、第三段中“Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. (虽然我和许多想骑自行车的人一样,担心在炎热的月份上班时汗流浃背,但电动自行车解决了我的问题)”和第四段中“But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was entirely enjoyable. (但是骑自行车上班不仅没有不愉快,而且完全是一种享受)”可知,作者原本担心的受冻、流汗的问题几乎不存在,相反,骑自行车还带来了享受。由此可知,作者对骑车上班的实际经历感到惊叹。故选D项。
26.词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. (我感觉自己与周围的自然环境更紧密地联系在一起,而不是走在被金属和玻璃包围的同一条路线上)”可推知,“这种感觉”指的是前面描述的对接触自然的喜爱。故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T. (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced horses. (在一个郊区和购物中心不受控制的延伸以及不受保护的自行车道成为常态的国家,期望电动自行车像福特的Model T车取代马匹那样取代汽车是不现实的)”可知,当前的城市交通情况很不利于电动自行车的发展。由此推知,城市需要一个更具包容性的交通网络。故选C项。

C.It is used to joke with older people. D.It symbolizes friendship.
29.Why does one woman find the thumbs-up emoji aggressive in her workplace?
A.Because it is a formal way of communication.
B.Because it shows disagreement with her messages.
C.Because it seems dismissive and unresponsive.
D.Because it was used only by younger colleagues.
30.What can be inferred about older workers from the text?
A.They misunderstand the younger generation's emoji preferences.
B.They intentionally use thumbs-up to annoy younger colleagues.
C.They avoid using emojis in work-related chats.
D.They view emojis as inappropriate in formal settings.
31.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The Emoji Debate: Generational Differences
B.How Thumbs-Up Became a Global Symbol
C.The Rise of Emojis in Professional Chats
D.Why Older Workers Prefer Thumbs-Up
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.A
根据第一段“Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive (冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.(Z世代(1995年至2009年之间出生的人)表示,竖起大拇指会被视为一种被动攻击,他们表示,每当竖起大拇指时,他们都会感到受到攻击。无论是在非正式场合、朋友之间还是工作场合聊天,这个符号对年轻一代来说似乎都有非常不同的“粗鲁”的含义。)”和第二段的句子“A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best never used in any situation as it is “hurtful”.(Reddit上一位24岁的网友总结了Z世代的观点,称在任何情况下都最好不要使用它,因为它“很伤人”。)”
根据第三段的内容““My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why, but it seemed a little bit aggressive to me,” one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”(“我的上一个工作场所有一个WhatsApp聊天工具,我们的团队可以在上面互相发送信息,但大多数人都只是竖起大拇指回复。
根据第二段的句子““No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they're mad-at me,” he added.(“办公室里和我同龄的人都不会这么做,但X世代(1966年至1980年出生的人)总是这么做。让我调整一下,让我不再认为这意味着他们在生我的气,”他补充道。)”和第四段“Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”(年长的员工似乎对这种反应感到困惑,他们说,他们在与工作相关的聊天中用大拇指表示“我同意”或“我理解并会跟进”。)” 故选A项。
故选A项。

D.Unclear.
根据文章第二段““If you do well in farming, you could earn $5,000 to S10.000 a year,” one local landowner said. “In the tourist area, you could have that within a couple of weekends.”(“如果你农活干得好,一年能挣5000到1万美元,”一位当地土地所有者说道。“在旅游区,你只需几个周末就能挣到这么多。”)”可知,在霍奇米尔科地区,农耕的经济收益不如旅游业。故选D。
33.主旨大意题。根据文章第三段“Now 32-year-old Garduño is one member of the growing organization called Chinampo Refuge, and she and other members encourage local people to protect their land.(现在32岁的Garduño是一个不断壮大的组织“Chinampo Refuge”的成员,她和其他成员鼓励当地人保护他们的土地。)”
根据文章第三段“That includes a special label-Etiqueta Chinampera, which tells buyers the produce came from a chinampa.(这包括一个特殊的标签——Etiqueta Chinampera,它告诉买家这些农产品来自浮田。)”
根据文章最后一段““It doesn’t look that harmful because there’s no construction,” says Zambrano. “But it’s just as damaging because of the amount of chemicals that are used, and the amount of pollution that is generated.”(Zambrano说:“看起来似乎没那么有害,因为没有建筑。”
