The world's most populous continent, Africa, is facing a major challenge due to climate change. The rise in sea levels caused by global warming has led to more frequent and severe flooding along Africa's coastline, which will have destructive consequences for the continent's economic growth.
According to a new report from the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, a US Department of Defense-funded think tank, once every 40 years, the century floods are expected to start happening in Africa. This will have a significant impact on the inland economies of coastal and port cities across the continent.
Experts warn that the destruction to these cities' infrastructure (基础设施) and services will be disastrous. In some areas, such as Ganvie in Benin's economic capital Cotonou, homes are built on wooden poles in a coastal lagoon (泻湖), making them highly vulnerable to flooding. Local government officials in So-Ava, where Ganvie is located, say flooding has become increasingly worse in recent decades, destroying crops and freshwater fish and leaving residents without homes or income. Alexandra Bodo, another resident of Ganvie, says his livestock (牲畜) were lost to the flood and his house was filled with water. "We lose our houses and we have no money to rebuild them, so the whole family sleeps in a boat," he said.
Communities along the coast around estuaries and coastal lagoons like Ganvie will be the first to bear the impacts. Flooding and coastal erosion (侵蚀) will also affect Africa's ports, which play a crucial role in trade and commerce.
Economists say that not enough is being done to address this issue. They argue that much more funding should be given to support the building of infrastructure and services in affected areas, particularly with regards to slowing down climate change.
The stretch of West Africa's coastline from Abidjan to Lagos is set to become the world's largest cities by the end of this century, with half a billion people living there. This could have a major impact on Africa's economy and global development if it develops poorly.
The rising sea levels caused by climate change in Africa are a serious threat to the continent's economic growth and stability. It is essential that urgent action is taken to reduce their effects and ensure that affected communities are supported in rebuilding their lives.
28.According to the text, what is the reason for flooding in coastal areas of Africa?
A.The increase of rainfall.
B.The movement of the continents.
C.The rising sea levels caused by global warming.
D.The development of industries and transportation.
29.What did Alexandra Bodo lose due to flooding in Ganvie?
A.Freshwater sources. B.Government support.
C.His livestock and house. D.His crops and fishing boat.
30.The underlined word "vulnerable" in paragraph 3 most likely means ________.
A.resistant B.easily harmed C.well-protected D.adaptable
31.What do economists suggest to address the flooding problem in Africa?
A.Reducing international trade.
B.Relocating all coastal communities.
C.Building taller houses in flood-prone areas.
D.Investing more in infrastructure and climate action.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It's the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people's homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the "paintbrush", and a smooth table as the "paper". To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it's a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What's worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people's daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed on.
32.What does the underlined word "precious" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Valuable and expensive. B.Useful and cheap.
C.Special but worthless. D.Simple but priceless.
33.When did sugar painting appear?
A.In the Warring States Period. B.In the Tang Dynasty.
C.In the Yuan Dynasty. D.In the Ming Dynasty.
34.What's the writer's attitude(态度) towards today's sugar painting according to Paragraph 4?
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Worried. D.Unclear.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A.Exploring the Art of Sugar Painting.
B.Improving the Taste of Sugar Painting.
C.Effects of the Sugar Producing Technology.
D.Ways to Change the Future of Sugar Painting.

It was a beautiful sunny morning. Tom, a young and energetic boy, was excited to ride his bicycle to the park. He had planned to meet his friends there and spend a fun day exploring and playing games.
Tom got on his beloved bicycle. It was a gift from his parents on his last birthday, a shiny blue color with a comfortable seat and smooth tires (轮胎). He pedaled with all his might, enjoying the freedom and joy that only a bicycle ride could bring. Suddenly he heard a strange sound coming from the wheels. At first, he thought it was just a small pebble (砾石) stuck in the tire, but then the noise became louder and louder, and the bicycle started to shake uncontrollably.
Before Tom could figure out what was happening, there was a loud noise, and the bicycle came to a sudden stop. Tom was thrown forward, barely managing to catch himself before hitting the ground. He got up, dusted himself off, and looked at his bicycle with a frown (皱眉). The chain had come off, and one of the tires was completely flat. "Oh no!" Tom cried out. "What am I going to do now?" He tried to put the chain back on, but it was too difficult without the right tools. He was frustrated and worried that he wouldn't be able to make it to the park to meet his friends.
Just as Tom was standing there helplessly, an old man walked by, who had a kind face and a gentle smile. He noticed Tom's suffering and asked, "What's wrong, boy?" Tom explained his situation to the old man, showing him his broken bicycle. The old man nodded understandingly and said, "Don't worry! I was a mechanic in my younger days. I might be able to help you." After checking the bike skillfully, he comforted Tom, "Just wait a moment and your bike will be as good as new."

Dear Chris,
I'm thrilled to hear about your participation in the World Environment Day activities.
At my school, we have been actively engaging in environmental protection initiatives. We conduct regular waste sorting campaigns and encourage students to practice it daily. Additionally, we take part in beautifying our campus by planting trees and flowers. Personally, I contribute by choosing green transportation modes like cycling or walking to school, and I strive to live a low-carbon lifestyle by conserving water and turning off lights when not in use. These activities have made me more aware of our environment's fragility and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
I hope to hear more about your experiences soon.
Yours,
Li Jin

The old man took out a small toolbox from his backpack. He removed the broken chain and cleaned it carefully before he put it back on. After that, he took out a pump and blew up the flat tire. Right nearby, Tom watched in amazement as the old man worked his magic. In no time at all, the bicycle was in perfect condition again, as if it had never broken down. "Amazing!" Tom cried with great admiration, his face lighting up, "Thank you so much! You've saved my day."
The old man smiled, "It's nothing, boy. Now go and enjoy your day." Waving goodbye to the old man, Tom jumped onto his bicycle and headed for the park delightedly. The breeze rushing through his hair, he finally reached the park where his friends were waiting. They spent the day playing and laughing. It was really a fun and beautiful day. That night, with laughter still lingering in his ears and appreciation deep inside, Tom determined to lend a hand to those in need just as the old man did.

Welcome to the Trailside Museum. Here you can learn about the local animals and their natural environments. There are many animal samples we have on show. One of our most famous is a large black bear. They live in this area but are uncommon. Many fishermen see them during certain seasons, but they stay away from humans. Most are seen near the lake. I think you will see some of these birds the most. You have probably seen many of our local birds already. Most people mainly notice little brown birds and the birds with red chests, but there are many different types of both. My favourite bird is actually the one with the colour of the sky. It is a bluebird. Right now it is spring when many animals are awake. There is a lot happening in the forest because of this. However, it is also the wettest season. This is why the north path is closed. Instead, hikers will need to use the higher and older paths through the park.

A. sitting坐;B. standing站;C. lying躺;D. running跑。 The old lady looked up at him "可推测,老人应该是坐在长椅上,才能抬头看到年轻人。故选A项。
A. practice练习;B. protect保护;C. provide提供;D. prevent阻止。 She was wearing an old coat"以及下文"against the freezing wind"可知,旧外套无法保护老太太免受寒冷侵袭,"protect…against…"
A. took off 脱下;B. put on穿上;C. gave up放弃;D. searched for寻找。 故选A项。
A. angrily生气地;B. loudly大声地;C. softly温和地;D. proudly骄傲地。 The young man felt sorry for her"及空后"his own warm scarf and gloves and handed them to her"可知,年轻人同情老太太并主动提供帮助,年轻人说话的语气应是温和友善的。故选C项。
A. fear恐惧;B. hope希望;C. surprise惊讶;D. sadness悲伤。根据上文"shivering with cold"及"his own warm scarf and gloves and handed them to her"可知,老太太在寒冷中突然收到陌生人的帮助,这是意料之外的事,因此眼中应是"惊讶"的神情。故选C项。
A. looked看;B. reached伸手;C. turned转向;D. fell掉落。
A. refused拒绝;B. hid隐藏;C. threw扔掉;D. accepted接受。
A. shocked震惊的;B. bored无聊的;C. relaxed放松的;D. disappointed失望的。 故选A项。
A. allowed允许;B. begged恳求;C. forced强迫;D. helped帮助。 I can't accept this"可知,年轻人拒绝接受,结合空前的转折词But推测,老太太在恳求对方收下小盒子。故选B项。
A. lesson道理;教训;B. skill技能;C. story故事;D. game游戏。 He realized that a small act of kindness could have a big impact on both the giver and the receiver." 故选A项。
A. raised筹集;B. lent借出;C. donated捐赠;D. earned赚取。根据下文"money to charity and helped those in need"可知,此处表示年轻人经常帮助有需要的人,所以此处表示的是捐钱给慈善机构。故选C项。
A. treasure珍宝;B. burden负担;C. trouble麻烦;D. secret秘密。根据下文"that could be passed from one person to another."以及"He realized that a small act of kindness could have a big impact on both the giver and the receiver." 故选A项。
A. admitted承认;B. explained解释;C. showed展示;D. proved证明。 One day, he received a letter from a lawyer. "可知,年轻人收到了律师的信,律师的信是为了告知年轻人事情的经过,即"解释"情况,故选B项。
55.考查形容词词义辨析。句意:她曾是个富有的人,但却选择过简单的生活。A. rich富有的;B. hard艰难的;C. simple简单的;D. happy快乐的。根据上文"a wealthy woman but had chosen to live a"可知,句中表示转折关系,她的生活应是与"富有"相反的,也就是"简单的",故选C项。
56 (read) body language is a valuable skill in interpersonal communication. It involves 57 (pay) attention to not just what people say, but also how they stand, move, and gesture. For example, someone 58 crosses their arms may be feeling defensive, while 59 (lean) forward often indicates interest.
Cultural context is important too. A gesture 60 is polite in one country might be offensive in another. 61 (learn) about these differences can help avoid 62 (embarrass) situations.
Experts suggest 63 (observe) people's body language as a whole rather than focusing on single gestures. By 64 (do) this, we can better understand others and communicate more effectively. After all, 65 (communicate) successfully is about more than just using words.
56.Reading 57.paying 58.who 59.leaning 60.that/which 61.Learning 62.embarrassing 63.observing 64.doing 65.communicating
involve doing sth."包括/涉及做某事"是固定搭配,动名词作宾语,pay的动名词为paying。故填paying。
58.考查定语从句。句意:例如,交叉双臂的人可能带有防御心理,而身体前倾通常表示感兴趣。空处引导限制性定语从句,先行词为someone指人,定语从句中缺少主语,需用关系代词who引导。故填who。
故填that/which。
介词by后接宾语,需用动名词形式,do的动名词为doing,by doing this意为"通过这样做"。故填doing。

Dear Chris,
I'm thrilled to hear about your participation in the World Environment Day activities.
Yours,
Li Jin
