Here’s how to make a model submarine (潜水艇) that dives and comes up from underwater like a real one.
You’ll need
Plastic bottle; Tape; Four coins; Thin rubber or plastic tube (管子);
Waterproof modeling clay (防水黏土)—not real clay, which dissolves (溶解) in water; Small scissors; Tub (盆).
You’ll follow
1. Cut two small holes on one side of the bottle. Tape coins to that side of the bottle. Take off cap (瓶盖); seal (密封) the tube to the bottle with clay.
2. Fill tub with water; put bottle in and let it fill with water.

Pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds show signs of feeling less isolated, according to scientists.
The study, which involved giving the birds a computer that they could use to make video calls, found that they began to engage in more social behaviors including preening, singing and playing. The birds were given a choice of which “friend” to call on a touchscreen computer and the study showed that the parrots that called other birds most often were the most popular choices.
Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, of the University of Glasgow and a co-author of the study, said that video calls had helped many people feel less isolated in the last few years. She added, “There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit (受益) from video calling too. If we gave them the chance to call other parrots, would they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers?”
Their study of 18 pet parrots suggested that there were, indeed, benefits for the birds. In the wild, many species of parrots live in large groups, but as pets they are, kept alone or in a small group. Living alone can cause birds, to develop mental problems, which include rocking, walking back and forth, or self-harming behaviors such as feather-plucking.
The parrots first learned to ring a bell and then touch a photo of another bird on the screen of a computer to make a call to that bird, with the help of their owners. In total the birds made 147 calls to each other during the study, while owners took detailed notes on the birds’ behavior and the researchers later reviewed the video footage.
Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University said that the parrots “seemed to know” that they were communicating with other birds. “All the bird owners in the study said they valued the experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.
“I was quite surprised at so many different behaviors,” said Hirskyj-Douglas. “Some would sing, some would play around and go upside down, others would want to show another bird their toys.”
34.The main purpose of the study is to find out _________.
A.if parrots can learn to make video calls B.if parrots can benefit from video calling
C.why parrots can have so many benefits D.why parrots can develop mental problems
35.What can we learn about the pet parrots?

A.amazed B.calm C.scared D.lonely
37.The following paragraph can best go after ________.
Video calling could reproduce some of the social benefits of living in a group, according to Rébecca Kleinberger, of Northeastern University and first author of the study.
A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4

How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of math or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to pay the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. But many are afraid the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re certainly not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety (焦虑) to the students, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems, 33% said they got nervous doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston University believes giving students, especially girls, good role models is critical, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women, who love teaching maths to younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. Because there’s no room for playing tricks in math tests, it makes you more worried about math. And once we think we’re not a math person, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.”
Psychologists (心理学家) have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic (心算) can bring us out in a sweat. That fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their control on you, and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Most importantly, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
38.What is the author’s understanding of maths anxiety in Paragraph 1?
A.It happens when people have to pay bills after a meal.
B.It actually shows one’s poor performance in maths.
C.Only students often suffer from this sense of worry.
D.People normally have it when dealing with numbers.
39.What may cause students’ maths anxiety according to the research?
A.The particular feature of maths. B.The fear of failure in maths tests.
C.Students’ dislike of learning maths. D.Maths teachers lack of confidence.
40.What can we infer from David Robson’s words?
A.Geography seldom causes worry. B.Slow students have maths worries.
C.Dishonesty is difficult in maths tests. D.Maths students like number puzzles.
41.What is the best way to get over maths anxiety?
A.Speaking out your fears in public. B.Inviting female maths teachers.
C.Having a positive attitude to maths. D.Viewing a maths test as a challenge.

Japanese scientists have created a satellite made of wood, which will be launched into space as early as this summer.
Called LignoSat, the box-shaped satellite is small enough to be held in your hand, but inside it are experiments that will show how well a wooden device (装备) can work in space. LignoSat is the result of a project developed by Kyoto University and the Sumitomo Forestry company to find new materials for satellites that will be better for our planet.
Until now, all satellites have been made of metal. When they reenter the Earth’s atmosphere (大气层), they burn up, leaving tiny particles of aluminum (铝) that could be very bad for our environment, and may even damage (破坏) the ozone layer (臭氧层).
A wooden satellite, however, would burn up into ash, which is far less harmful.
Researchers from Kyoto University tested different kinds of wood—first in laboratories, and then sending three samples to the International Space Station, where they were tested in the vacuum (真空) of space for nearly a year. They showed little signs of damage, which the leader of the project said was probably because there is no oxygen in space which could cause wood to burn, and no living creatures that might cause it to rot (腐烂).
Different types of wood were tested, and LagnoSat has been made of magnolia (木兰) wood, which was found to be the strongest.
The launch date for LignoSat has not yet been decided, but it should go up on a US rocket either this summer or a little later in the year. The satellite will then operate in space for at least six months before reentering the Earth’s atmosphere.
If LignoSat works well in space and the project is a success, then wood could be used to make more satellites in the future.
42.What is LignoSat?
A.It is a metal device. B.It is a new kind of material.
C.It is a box as small as your hand. D.It is a satellite made of magnolia wood.
43.Wood is used to make a satellite because wood can ________.
A.be harmful to the ozone layer
B.cost less money than other materials
C.leave tiny particles of aluminum in space
D.not rot easily in space and it’s friendly to our environment
44.What can we infer from the passage?
A.LignoSat will be sent into space successfully.
B.The project developed by Kyoto University is meaningless.
C.Scientists are uncertain about the future of LignoSat.
D.All satellites will be made of wood instead of metal.
45.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Japan will launch a wooden satellite B.Japan is trying to protect the ozone layer
C.Japan will join the International Space Station D.Japan has found the strongest wood in the world

A.if parrots can learn to make video calls B.if parrots can benefit from video calling
C.why parrots can have so many benefits D.why parrots can develop mental problems
35.What can we learn about the pet parrots?
A.Their way to communicate is singing. B.Most of them used to live in large groups.
C.The most popular ones made most calls. D.They can make video calls by themselves.
36.Which word has the closest meaning to “isolated”?
A.amazed B.calm C.scared D.lonely
37.The following paragraph can best go after ________.
Video calling could reproduce some of the social benefits of living in a group, according to Rébecca Kleinberger, of Northeastern University and first author of the study.
