Sugar King Zhou Yi is a famous person in China’s sugar art world. Born in 1983 in Panzhihua, Sichuan Province, he is known for mixing Chinese traditional skill—dough modelling (面塑) with Western cake making technology. Nowadays, a lot of his lively sugar art works have won many people’s hearts.
Some of his works got him great success. For example, in 2017, his work Wu Zetian won the top prize at the Cake International Competition, making him the first Chinese to get this success. Since then, he has been famous as the “Sugar King”. He later won the “Master (大师) Sugar Artist of the Year” in 2018. His works, including Mermaid (美人鱼) and Chang’e, won four gold medals in 2019.
In order to spread (传播) traditional Chinese culture to the world, Zhou Yi made a lot of art works about Chinese traditional stories, historical characters. For example, he got the inspiration (灵感) from Dunhuang art and spent three months making the work called Great Dream of Dunhuang (大梦敦煌). The excellent work has been shown online and got millions of likes. Through his hard work, more and more people fall in love with this kind of art. To pass down this traditional sugar art, Zhou Yi tries his best to teach all the young. He has written over ten books, like The Art of Sugar Works. He also shares his art works through all kinds of museums and TV shows.
