So when he lost his dad to pancreatic cancer, he turned to the healing power of the ocean. At the start of this year, Fischer wrote his father’s name on his surfboard and took it out to sea in Newport, Rhode Island. His father’s name shone in the sun on what felt like a shared adventure. Inspired, Fischer made a video and posted it on social media the same day. “If you love the ocean, or you know someone who loves the ocean, or maybe you lost someone who just loved being outdoors..., you can comment on this video with their name and a bit of their story, and I’ll put their name on my board here, just like I’ve done with my father’s name,” he said in the video. “And I’ll take them out in the ocean for you.” Names poured in from thousands of strangers grieving (悲伤) the loss of loved ones. And with that, the One Last Wave Project was born, the aim of which was to exchange stories with a community of people going through the same pain. They were essentially healing together. About two months later, Fischer had received over 5,000 names and written most of them on two surfboards. The first two surfboards ran out of space — he’s working on getting more. He wrote the names in neat letters on the surfboard and put a clear acrylic (丙烯酸) coat over them so they didn’t wash off. Though a lot of people have been struggling with grief in the pandemic, Fischer was amazed by the responses that have poured in. “If I am able to help one person or one person shares their name, that is enough for me,” he said. “But I am blown away — by not just the number of people sharing, but the depth of stories and love that they are sharing.” And he plans to take his project around the world and connect with even more people — through shared grief and the power of the ocean. 4. How did Fischer share his idea with others? A. By giving a live broadcast online. B. By posting a video on the Internet. C. By going to the beach with his father. D. By writing his father’s name on the surfboard. 5. Why did Fischer start the One Last Wave Project? A. To memorize his father. B. To attract public attention. C. To face the pandemic bravely. D. To help people out of sadness. 6. What does Fischer intend to do next? A. Share his experience at sea. B. Extend the project worldwide. C. Connect to more social media. D. Sail around the world with strangers. 7. What can we learn from the story? A. Actions speak louder than words. B. He who laughs last laughs best. C. A good beginning makes a good ending. D. Sharing can help heal the pain. C A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened? If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong? Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the “out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight. The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail? Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower — at least to a point. Willpower may also be made less vulnerable (脆弱) to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength. The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all. 8. From the studies in the passage we learn that ________. A. people have unlimited self-control B. high motivation ensures one’s success C. people tend to keep some willpower in store D. temptations help to reserve willpower 9. The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________. A make use of B. run out of C. get rid of D. take charge of 10. The author compares self-control to muscles ________. A. to prove the long-term effect of willpower B. to show the significance of regular exercise C. to argue that self-control can be easily used up D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control 11. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer? A. “I will give up dessert and do exercise.” B. “I will set three goals this new semester.” C. “I will read an English novel every month.” D. “I will keep myself from any temptation.” D Midway through The Matrix, Cypher feasts on an enormous steak, well aware that his reality is not real, part of a digital program telling his brain that the steak is a construction and that it is “juicy and delicious.” Two decades after the movie made its first appearance, something unexpected arises: The future of reality will not only be virtual but also synthetic (合成的). Cypher’s future meal will be a physical one, synthesized from animal cells. And the synthesis goes beyond dinner. Starting with components from the natural world, scientists are learning to engineer microorganisms and build biocomputing systems. However, biology has a tendency to evolve in unexpected ways. Synthesized meat is one case in point. The driving forces behind the meat movement are practical. It has been estimated that cultured (培育的) meat would require 7 to 45 percent less energy and produce 78 to 96 percent less greenhouse gas than conventional animals farmed for consumption. But once we’re able to synthesize meat, theoretically, we’ll have the capability to culture meat from any animal, even those we’d never consider eating today, like dolphins or chimpanzees, which will pose a new regulatory challenge for us. Using synthetic biology, we can even edit and rewrite life, the technology of which are already in use. In 2021, scientists in some countries announced they had grown monkey embryos injected with human stem cells. Here comes the situation worth considering: such a monkey-human hybrid will demonstrate qualities that are somewhere between humans, on which experimentation isn’t allowed, and animals, which are often raised specifically for research. How will we decide when an animal becomes too human? Depending on where you stand, the synthetic realities land somewhere between “really exciting” and “critically concerning.” As individuals, we undertake a shared responsibility to make good choices about this coming synthetic technology. 12. What do we know about Cypher’s steak in the movie? A. It is anything but appetizing. B. It is enjoyed in a virtual world. C. It is synthesized from animal cell. D. It is a construction made by himself. 13. What’s the advantage of synthesized meat? A. It is more nutritious. B. It is more energy-consuming. C. It is more environment-friendly. D. It is more controllable in regulation. 14. What is the author’s attitude to the experiment in Paragraph 4? A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Pessimistic. D. Indifferent. 15. What is the purpose of the text? A. To popularize synthetic technology. B. To indicate challenges of synthetic technology. C. To stress the importance of synthetic technology. D. To introduce the development of synthetic technology. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) I plan to remember this year’s vacation season with just two words: NEVER AGAIN. Never again, that is, will I take all my technology along.____16____Instead of long evenings of crossword puzzles or board games, we checked our Twitter feeds and updated our Facebook pages. That is the problem with the Internet: unless you’re equipped with massive self-control, you use it if it’s there. For several years, I kept my Internet addiction under control by using inconvenient technology: a laptop which is old and not in good condition and a slow dial- up connection.____17____The magical iPad signaled silently from the picnic table: Once that attractive touch screen lights up, who can resist? ____18____I’m a late adopter. As early as 2008, Nicholas Carr, a famous writer, was warning that broadband Internet was reducing our attention spans and making us stupid. Even before that, in 2000,Harvard’s Robert Putnam warned that television—and, more broadly, staring into any kind of screen —had reduced the amount of time families spent in social interactions. ____19____I love having a bottomless library at my fingertips; I love having the world’s newspapers on my electronic doorstep. It’s also nice to have an app that identifies the constellations when you hold the iPad up to the night sky. But then, you have to remember to put the screen down and simply drink in the stars. And that’s the point:____20____It’s our fault instead of the Internet, for failing to control the urge to browse. So now I have one more thing to look forward to next summer: More time reading old novels; more time playing crossword puzzles and chasing frogs. A. The Internet has ruined summer vacations. B. Access to the Web is unquestionably a wonderful thing. C. I’m not the first to get lost across this problem, of course. D. People should not rely simply on the Internet to provide them with other information. E. It’s important not to let the convenience of the Internet get in the way of simpler beauties. F. Although the Internet is often useful, it can become addictive and prevent human interaction. G. But this year, the combination of a new iPad and very good Wi-Fi turned out to be disastrous. 第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 完形填空 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) I finished my dinner and went into a shop in the hope of finding some last-minute Christmas gifts. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence. Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district. “Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.” When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container. “I don't need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk. That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn't help sharing the incident that had taken place. “I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal. “Yes.” he nodded. “And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.” As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him. 注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为100左右; 2.续写两段,开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard' s family. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The next day, I had a special class for Willard. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 襄阳五中2025-2026届高三上学期测试(二) 英语试卷 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 1. 【答案】4. B 5. D 6. B 7. A. make use of B. run out of C. get rid of D. take charge of 10. The author compares self-control to muscles ________. A to prove the long-term effect of willpower B. to show the significance of regular exercise C. to argue that self-control can be easily used up D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control 11. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer? A. “I will give up dessert and do exercise.” B. “I will set three goals this new semester.” C. “I will read an English novel every month.” D. “I will keep myself from any temptation.” 【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第三段中“Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands.(研究人员认为,人的意志力永远不会完全耗尽。相反,人们似乎保留了一些意志力以备未来需求)”可知,选项C. people tend to keep some willpower in store(人们倾向于储存一些意志力)与关键文本hold some willpower in reserve完全一致。故选C。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down.(相反,人们似乎保留了一些意志力以备未来需求。正确的动机使我们能够tap into这些储备,即使我们的自制力已经耗尽,也能让我们继续前进)”可知,上下文提到人们保留意志力储备,后接允许我们继续坚持,可推断tap into意为“利用”,和选项A. make use of(利用)一致。故选A。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.(虽然肌肉在短期内会因运动而疲劳,但长期定期运动可以增强肌肉。同样,经常练习自我控制可以提高意志力)”可知,作者通过肌肉长期锻炼变强类比自控力规律练习增强意志力,目的是解释练习自控力的好处(即增强意志力),和选项D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control(解释练习自我控制的好处)一致。故选D。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach.(所以一次只专注于一个目标更有意义。换句话说,不要试图戒烟,同时采取健康的饮食和开始一个新的锻炼计划。一个一个地制定目标是一个更好的方法)”可知,作者强调一次一个目标,排除多目标选项。选项C. “I will read an English novel every month.” 我将每月读一本英文小说(单一、具体、可坚持的目标)符合一次一个目标的原则。故选C。 D Midway through The Matrix, Cypher feasts on an enormous steak, well aware that his reality is not real, part of a digital program telling his brain that the steak is a construction and that it is “juicy and delicious.” Two decades after the movie made its first appearance, something unexpected arises: The future of reality will not only be virtual but also synthetic (合成的). 【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willard's family. On entering his house, I was surprised to find a barely empty room with a broken bed and a dirty sofa. Willard told me his mother died and that his father was missing, leaving him to live with a sick grandma. When asked why he had given the two quarters, Willard mumbled, “ I just want to help others by contributing my milk money.” I couldn't help bursting into tears, thinking I should help him break his silence. Paragraph 2: The next day, I had a special class for Willard. I shared his story with the whole class and said, “Now, on behalf of the people in need, I should say thanks to Willard, you are great! ” After a silence, all the students clapped, saying “Willard, you are great! ” and they walked to him and hugged him tightly. A friendly relationship was built and Willard's silence was broken by a smile on his face. 哭泣:burst into tears/burst out crying 捐赠:donate /give away 情绪类 惊讶:surprised/astonished/amazed 感谢:say thanks/ express one’s gratitude 【点睛】[高分句型1] When asked why he had given the two quarters, Willard mumbled,” I just want to help others by contributing my milk money.”(运用了why引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] I couldn't help bursting into tears, thinking I should help him break his silence.
