The ritual of riding bikes together is a saving grace for families. From forest tracks to coastal paths we pick easy-to-follow bike routes through beautiful scenery.
Route 1
This traffic-free section of the Deeside Way runs along an old railway route. This ride runs through forests that are especially attractive in autumn. This is an out-and-back route rather than a loop (环形), so if the full ride seems too long, simply turn around earlier to make it a shorter ride.
·Distance: 22 miles return. Bike hire: £20 a day for an adult, £10 for a child.
Route 2
The stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal is picturesque. The path is shared with walkers, which keeps the pace of riding slow. The route is perfectly suited for relaxed family cycling. Highlights include Claverton Pumping Station, but kids will definitely love the boat that sells ice-cream and the rope swings along the way.
·Distance:17.6 miles return. Bike hire: £18 a day for an adult, £15 for a child.
Route 3
The scenic Mawddach Trail lies in the shadow of Cadair Idris, one of the wellknown and popular mountains in southern Snowdonia. But don’t be put off: this is an easy, flat and coastal route, with no serious climbs. This path is rich in birdlife, and a huge variety of butterflies and dragonflies. It’s also grass snake country.
·Distance: 18 miles return. Bike hire: £20 a day for an adult, £10 for a child.
Route 4
The Shepherd Trail in Thetford Forest is a green trail. The path is relatively flat, wide enough for cyclists to ride two abreast and short enough to be manageable for even the most out-of-practice or novice (新手) cyclists.
·Distance: 5-mile loop. Bike hire: £36 a day for an adult, £29 for a child.
1. How much will a couple with a child pay for one-day riding along Route 1?
A. £30. B. £40. C. £50. D. £60.
2. What makes Route 2 different from the others?
A. It has beautiful views. B. It is child-friendly.
C. It allows fast riding. D. It follows an old railway.
3. Who would most probably prefer to ride on Route 3?
A. A wildlife lover. B. A long-distance cyclist.
C. A playful child. D. A vacation camper.

CPR and basic first aid care are skills that millions acquire. Now this same type of training is available for mental health. Sigma Theta Alpha (STA), a professional health organization at UConn (University of Connecticut), has taken the lead to bring the program to campus, ensuring each student can benefit from it.
Mental Health First Aid training is a national initiative that is performed locally by Mental Health Connecticut, a statewide non-profit organization. The group has come to UConn three times for training. “We introduce information on mental illness with the basic facts. We don’t teach how to diagnose — we do the opposite. Labeling and jumping to conclusions based on symptoms and behaviors are harmful and dangerous, because that is for professionals,” says Valerie Cooper, a community educator for the organization.
Like CPR, Mental Health First Aid is a universal experience taught the same way everywhere. The program is split into classroom-style work, watching videos, and simulation of real-life issues. The action plan taught works under the acronym of ALGEE — Assess for risk of harm, Listen non-judgmentally, Give reassurance and information, Encourage appropriate professional help, and Encourage self-help and other support strategies. “Being a mental health first aider is to listen non-judgmentally and create a space of trust,” says Cooper. “We teach people that listening will be more important than anything they say.”
UConn nursing major Lisa Iwanicki, 18, is a member of Sigma Theta Alpha. Iwanicki says she got a lot out of the simulation activities. “It was cool to be in a room with people who wanted to help make a change. It was not just about learning the signs of mental illness, but what someone can do in the community to help,” says Iwanicki. “Recovery is possible. The most important thing is to keep people hopeful. You have to try and try.”
4. What is the aim of Sigma Theta Alpha?
A. To evaluate students’ behaviors. B. To teach students basic first aid skills.
C. To treat students’ health issues. D. To enhance students’ mental well-being.
5. What should be stressed in communication according to Valerie Cooper?
A. Giving personal suggestions. B. Avoiding rush judgement.
C. Creating a private space. D. Reducing interaction.
6. What did Lisa Iwanicki learn according to the last paragraph?
A. The best way to treat mental illness. B. The key to providing assistance.
C. The benefits of helping the community. D. The different signs of body recovery.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A student care project at UConn. B. Development of CPR skills.
C. A professional health organization. D. Campus activities of UConn.

In between the speedboats and wooden fishing boats in a Hong Kong harbor, a different kind of boat sails. It looks ordinary, but as the three-meter-long new unmanned boat moves skillfully through the water, it consumes waste floating on the surface. Wasted plastic water bottles and juice boxes travel through a gap in the front of the boat and move up a belt.
Around 33 billion pounds of plastic trash enter the oceans every year, according to Oceana, an ocean conservation group. The sight of this ever-growing marine litter is truly concerning. “We have garbage trucks for the land. Why don’t we have something to clean the water?” said Sidhant Gupta, the co-founder of the marine-tech startup Clearbot, which developed the boat.
Clearbot is trying to change that with its autonomous boats. The boats can provide data by algorithms and analyze what items are being collected so that they can help people stop the flow of waste into waterways. And the boats don’t stop at collecting waste. There are many other “dull, dirty or dangerous” jobs that Clearbot’s boats are capable of. Equipped with sensors and tools, they can map the bottom of waterways, test water quality and collect samples.
Due to the massive need for marine clean-up, Clearbot is now focused on scaling up. Gupta hopes to have 20 boats put into use by next year, and 50 in operation within two years. “You should be able to see these in the harbors and think it’s so normal,” said Gupta. “We want it to be used widely.”
Some worry that too many boats will also cause pollution. But Gupta doesn’t think so. This boat has an impressive energy system. It has solar panels on top and an 8-hour battery, which can store the energy and enable it to operate without relying on traditional energy sources. “The fleet has the potential to protect the marine ecology and turn to pollution-free marine operations across a range of uses by replacing fossil fuel-powered boats,” said Gupta.
8. What drives Sidhant Gupta to develop this new boat?
A. Lack of transport boats. B. Needs of local fishermen.
C. Increase in marine litter. D. Waste of water resources.
9. What can we know about the performance of the boat?
A. It is multi-functional.
B. It works better underwater.
C. It requires manual operation.
D. It can avoid risky situations.
10. What does the underlined phrase “scaling up” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Selling abroad. B. Functioning well.
C. Building harbors. D. Adding production.
11. What is the boat expected to do in marine operations?
A. To achieve zero carbon emissions.
B. To help conduct research on marine ecology.
C To develop deep-sea fossil fuels.
D. To improve efficiency of marine operations.
D
Do you know which letter was the last one to be added to the English alphabet? Or what is the name of the galaxy that our planet Earth is part of? In 2009, Colin Camerer and his colleagues were among the first ones to study how our brains respond to trivia (琐事) questions like these, because they wanted to see what happens in our brains when we feel curious.
To do this, they ran a brain imaging study that allowed researchers to see which brain regions are activated as people engage in mental activities like seeing, thinking, selecting, and so on.
They found that for questions about which participants had reported high curiosity, parts of the brain typically associated with reward lit up. These areas usually light up when we are expecting that something good or rewarding is about to happen. Imagine how you feel just before watching a concert or a movie you’ve been eager to see.
Next came the Reveal. When participants finally got the answers to the questions, the parts of their brains that are typically associated with memory and learning became active. Even more telling was that these areas were more strongly activated when the initial guess was incorrect than when it was correct.
Simply put, what these findings suggest is that curiosity sets up an anticipation of a reward (for the correct answer), and once we receive the reward (the correct answer), the brain acts to consolidate (巩固) our memory so that we learn the correct answer. This learning is stronger if we have initially failed rather than succeeded.
And such learning from failure is also stickier. Even after ten days, Camerer and colleagues found that participants could remember the correct answers to the questions they had initially guessed incorrectly, showing that failure can make us curious to learn the correct answer, and once we learn it, it sticks for longer as well.
12. Which aspect of the human brain does Colin Camerer’s study focus on?
A. Its response to curiosity. B. Its state during learning.
C. Its function development. D. Its development with age.
13. The brain’s reward system will be activated when ________.
A. the imagination goes wild B. people engage in leisure activities
C. anticipation levels increase D. people witness something good
14. According to the Reveal part, what may make our brains more eager to learn?
A. Incorrect choices. B. A better reward. C. An active atmosphere. D. Confusing questions.
15. Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?
A. The Art from Trivia Questions B. Must-Have Abilities of Successful People
C. Unsolved Mysteries in the World D. The Secrets to Being a Super Learner

Max, 17, is a senior at Ransom Everglades School in Florida. He loved basketball more than anything in the world. He would spend hours every day practicing his dribbling (运球) and shooting. He dreamed of one day becoming professional basketball player and playing in the NBA.
Max’s town had a small basketball court that was often empty. Max would go there every day after school to practice. One day, as he was practicing shooting, he heard a voice behind him.
“Nice shot, kid,” the voice said.
Max turned around to see a tall man with a friendly smile. The man introduced himself as Coach Johnson of a basketball club named Florida Tiger, and asked Max if he wanted to join his team.
Max was overjoyed. He had never played on a team before and couldn’t wait to start. The team was made up of kids from all over the state, and they practiced every day after school. Max quickly became the star player of the team. He was fast, agile (灵活的), and had an incredible shot. At first, Max trained well and scored a lot of points in some mini competitions, relying on his super high shooting percentage. But Coach Johnson soon noticed a problem: Max played as if he were alone on the court, never communicating or collaborating with his teammates.
Johnson communicated with Max about his problem many times, but Max remained unconvinced, “I’ve scored enough points using my shooting ability. I don’t see how it’s something that needs to be changed. ”
The next game was with The Bolles School. It was Max’s first time playing in the Intercollegiate Major Competition. He was nervous, but more than that, he was confident. The big day finally came. Before the game, Coach Johnson made a final plea (请求) for Max to focus on passing and teamwork. Max simply nodded before heading to the court, his mind set on proving his talent.

【答案】Dear editor,
Learning that the column “Recording Life Through the Camera” is set up, I am writing to submit my photography entry, which holds a special place in my heart.
The photo captures a charming street in my hometown during the Spring Festival. Bright red lanterns hang on the trees, lighting up the street where people wear traditional clothes and children joyfully set off fireworks. This photo was taken last year when I returned to my hometown for the Spring Festival. It reminds me of the warmth and happiness of reuniting with family during this special time. Every glance at this picture deepens my connection with my hometown.
I sincerely hope my photo inspires my schoolmates to cherish the precious moments spent with their families.
Yours,
Li Hua

With all players ready, the game began. Max quickly became the center of attention, relying on his outstanding shooting skills. However, his opponents were stronger and sharper this time. They seemed to have noticed Max’s problem and designed a strategy to stop him. Their defence was perfectly-organized, like a wall. Soon, Max found himself cornered and his shots blocked. The frustration was overwhelming, his usual skills and precision deserting him. Seeing the scoreboard, he felt a sense of tension.
Falling behind, Max knew he must change. Recalling Coach Johnson’s words, Max found a way out. He began to pass the ball and create opportunities for his teammates. Gradually, the situation changed. Their opponents’ seemingly unbreakable defence was broken down as Max and his teammates worked together. In the dying seconds, with the score neck and neck, a well-timed pass found its way to Max. Shouldering the trust, he made the final shot. The court was silent, the clock ticking. The ball flew gracefully in the air and finally went through the net. They won! The cheers burst out, but deep down, Max understood the victory was due to team cooperation.
