教学实施过程:
1. Have students read the title and the quote and then answer the following questions.
(1) Why do you think there is fun in science?
In my opinion, there is fun in science, because science is filled with wonders and
mysteries, such as why dinosaurs became extinct and why the sky is blue. We are curious
about the world around us. Science is a process of learning about the natural world we live
in. Nearly everything in our daily life has a scientific explanation and it is fun to know it.
(2) How do you understand the quote from Brian Greene?
The quote wants to emphasize science is inseparable from our daily life. Even though
mysteries still exist, there are in fact scientific explanations to some of them. Scientists are
working hard to do research in the hope of solving all the mysteries.
2. Have students read the leaflet on page 43 and answer the following questions.
(1) What affects the travel of the starlight?
The travel of the starlight is affected by the air. When a star shines its light through our
atmosphere, the air bends the light. As the air moves, its temperature and density change,

affecting the way the light bends.
(2) Why do the stars closer to the horizon appear to twinkle more than those stars higher in
the sky?
Because between us and the stars closer to the horizon, there is a lot more air, so they
appear to twinkle more than those stars higher in the sky.
(3)Why is a flower’s fragrance essential for the plant’s survival?
Each flower’s fragrance is unique and it attracts particular insects to the flower, which help
spread its pollen so that seeds can be produced.
3. Have students answer the first question on page 43.
Stars appear to twinkle because the atmosphere’s air particles are constantly moving, so
they cause the light travelling through the air to bend in different ways. This means that the
brightness and position of the starlight change accordingly. Our position on the Earth also
affects how much stars appear to twinkle. The atmosphere is thicker closer to the surface of
the Earth, so stars near the horizon seem to twinkle more when we look at them through the
thicker atmosphere.
A flower has its special tissue that releases a mixture of chemicals into the air, which forms
the flower’s unique fragrance. This fragrance is important because it can attract certain
insects to the flower, which help spread its pollen and ensure the production of seeds.
4. Have students answer the second question on page 43.
I know why pandas are black and white. The panda’s white coat helps it blend in with
snowy habitats, while the black helps it hide in forests. Pandas are active in both habitats, so
they have evolved to be both black and white. However, their unique black-and-white pattern
is important in other ways. The well-known cute black pattern on their head is used to
communicate with other pandas. Their dark eye patches may be used to show other panda
competitors how they feel. As each panda’s markings are unique, they can also easily
recognize one another. In addition, its black ears may be used to warn away predators.
