[四川成都七中2024高二期中]The Eye of the Sahara is a geological formation in the Sahara Desert that resembles an enormous blue bullseye. The formation stretches across a 40-kilometre-wide region of the desert in the nation of Mauritania.
For centuries, only a few local tribes knew about the formation. It was first photographed in the 1960s by the astronauts who used it as a landmark to track the progress of their landing sequences. Later, the Landsat satellite took additional images and provided information about the size, height, and extent of the formation.
Geologists originally believed that the Eye of the Sahara was created when an object from outer space crashed into the surface. However, lengthy studies of the rocks inside the structure show that its origins are entirely Earth-based, as the formation contains rocks that are at least 100 million years old; some date back to well before the appearance of life on Earth.

22
Millions of years ago, volcanic activity from deep beneath Earth’s surface lifted the entire landscape around the Eye. After the volcanism died down, wind and water erosion (侵蚀) began to eat away at the layers of rock. The region began to settle down and collapse in on itself, creating the roughly circular “eye” feature.
The Eye of the Sahara attracts both tourists and geologists to study the unique geological feature in person. However, because the Eye is located in a remote region of the desert with very little water or rainfall, it is not under much threat from humans.
刷阅读理解
23
That leaves the Eye at the mercy of nature. The ongoing effects of erosion threaten the landscape, just as they do other places on the planet. Desert winds may well bring more dunes (沙丘) to the region, particularly as climate change causes increased desertification in the area. It’s quite possible that, in the distant future, the Eye of the Sahara will be buried under sand and dust. Future travellers may find only a windswept desert burying one of the most striking geological features on the planet.

[安徽江南十校2025高二联考]Nestling in the waters off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, an unusual sea floor sculpture park is safeguarding its ocean environment.
Fisherman Paolo Fanciulli has been casting his nets in these waters since his youth along the Maremma coastline. It was in the 1980s that he began to notice the clear signs: The seabed was becoming barren, with exhausted fish stocks. Until recently, Paolo has found himself competing with not only the decline of ocean resources but also the threatening practices of illegal “bottom trawlers (拖网捕鱼的人)”, who randomly spoil a large quantity of ocean life as they fish, dragging a weighted net along the sea floor behind their boats.
Paolo’s style of artisanal fishing (手工捕鱼), in contrast, is friendly to nature as damaging the ecosystem could reduce fishermen’s income. He understood that the success of his fishing activity was linked to the good state of the environment. The underwater “House of Fish” sculpture park, which was started in 2015, was spurred by this fisherman’s desire to do

something.“One of the most effective solutions is to physically prevent trawling through artificial reefs, so I started working on this project, trying to combine the protection of the seabed with something that could also give an added value to our environment, something as beautiful as a sculpture,” he stated.
Sculptures or rocks can break weighted trawler nets. They can also function as artificial reefs, offering habitats to corals and other sea creatures. Due to the presence of the underwater sculptures, some species not seen in a long while such as groupers and lobsters have rejoined the waters. The sculpture park represents both an artwork and a defence against destructive sea floor trawling.
Presently, 39 massive stone sculptures are scattered across the seabed along an area of the Tuscan coastline near the town of Talamone. In the near future, Paolo hopes to extend his protective efforts in coastal waters.“The sea is still under threat,” he said, “and my mission to protect it continues.”

It seems that we are one step closer to finding alien life and maybe a future home for humanity. Scientists from NASA have found a new solar system filled with planets that look like the Earth and could even support life.
The group of seven planets, which orbits a star called TRAPPIST-1, is about 39.13 light years away from the Earth in the constellation of Aquarius (水瓶座).And three of them are in the “habitable zone”—the area around a star where water is most likely to be found. This is important because water is necessary for life.
“This is an amazing planetary (行星的) system, not only because we have found so many planets, but because they are all surprisingly similar in size to the Earth,” lead study author Michael Gillon from the University of Liège in Belgium told The Independent.
TRAPPIST-1 is a “dwarf star” (矮星) which is colder and dimmer than our sun. If a person were on one of the seven planets, he would find everything looks a lot darker than usual.

The amount of light heading towards our eyes would be about 200 times less than we get from the sun, according to The Independent.
Because of that, TRAPPIST-1, together with many other dwarf stars, was never on the list of places where scientists looked for alien life. But Michael Gillon decided to give dwarf stars a chance. He built a telescope in Chile to observe 60 of the closest dwarf stars, and it turned out that TRAPPIST-1 was worthy of the effort.
The researchers hope that they can spend more time watching the newly found planets to learn more about them. Even though more research is needed before determining whether these planets could really support life, the discovery is still encouraging. It shows just how many Earth-size planets could be out there.
“The discovery gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not just a matter of if, but when,” NASA scientist Thomas Zurbuchen told The Telegraph.

[福建师大附中2024高二期中]Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are filled with a diverse range of fish. Some fish are more beautiful to humans than others, and many people firmly believe that beautiful fish deserve more conservation than the uglier species. Is the “firm belief” true? You can get the answer from a new paper published in the journal PLOS Biology.
Researchers showed 481 photographs of ray-finned reef fish to 13,000 members of the public. With that data, they then trained a computer model to generate predictions for additional 4,400 photographs of 2,417 of the most common reef fish species. They next compared the aesthetic rating (美学等级) of each species with other characteristics, including evolutionary history, distinctiveness from other fish, conservation status and importance to fisheries.
After analysing the numbers, researchers found that the fish humans rated as the most beautiful tended to be less ecologically and evolutionarily distinct. Prettier fish were also more likely to be listed as species of “least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most ecologically and evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened” on the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species also tended to be more important to commercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk for overfishing.
“The less attractive species have the highest ecological distinctiveness, and thus provide the highest diversity of ecological functions,” the researchers write in the paper.“We need to pay more attention to the extinction risk of the less attractive fish species, or that might have overlooked effects on reef ecosystem functioning.”
“Therefore, to minimise the impact of aesthetic biases, scientists, conservation groups and policymakers may need to change how they communicate about wildlife,” the researchers write.“Making people more aware of the roles uglier fish play in reef ecosystems could help them gain more support.”

[四川成都蓉城名校联盟2024高二期末联考]Stress is common in modern society. When you decide to do something about your stress levels it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to turn your whole life upside down—quit your job, file for divorce, move to another country. Among all the stress management strategies out there we are forgetting one essential treatment—taking time for a rest.
For a long time, psychology was based on a clear division between the body and mind. Psychologists focused almost only on what went on between our ears. The body was the responsibility of medical doctors and gym instructors. Recently, however, there has been a growing realisation within psychology circles that the body and mind are closely connected with each other, far more than anyone ever imagined. You suffer more from stress when you are feeling run-down or are suffering from flu. If you have a bad night’s sleep, everything is more stressful the next day.

While you are more likely to suffer from stress when you are feeling poorly, you can alleviate it by looking after your body. Rest is actually good for both the body and mind. We all need at least a little time to think, to reflect on life and even just to be bored. Your free time is meant for relaxation and recovery, and that is impossible when you have too much to do.
We need to relearn the art of rest, especially in these busy times. Getting enough rest is not just something we should do when we are exhausted. It is only when we take a good rest that we will be able to take a stand against stress. I like to imagine that in a few years from now it will be entirely acceptable to say, “Given how hard I worked last week on our project, this week I am going to take a day off.”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I made it all the way to the fifth grade before anyone (except me) realised that I couldn’t see twenty feet in front of me. Our school had vision screenings (视力普查) every year but somehow I had managed to fake good vision and pass the tests.
But then in the fifth grade, I failed. It was my turn to go into the screening room, and I nervously took my seat in front of the testing machine. The nurse told me to look into the little black machine and tell her which direction the letter E’s legs were pointing in. Barely able to make out the black spot of an E, I made a guess, “Right, left, left, up, down, up, left, right.” I looked up at her.
She studied my face for a moment. Then she said, “Could you repeat that?”
I panicked. I’d never been asked to repeat it. And I didn’t memorise the guess I’d just made up. I was trapped. So, I looked into the machine again and made up another sequence of guesses. I glanced over at the nurse, who was leaning forward with a frown on her face.

“You have no idea which way they’re facing, do you?” she asked.
“Not really,” I confessed.
“Can you even see the E at all?” she asked.
“Sort of… no,” I admitted.
“Then why didn’t you just say so?” she demanded.
I didn’t respond. I thought the answer was obvious. Glasses in the fifth grade were a social death sentence. I would become a joke in my class. The nurse sent me home with a note for my mother that said I needed to visit the eye doctor because I’d failed the vision test. The trip home today was very slow.
My mother (who wears glasses) said it would all be just fine. It wouldn’t hurt a bit, she said. But I wasn’t worried about pain—I was worried about looking like Super Geek (怪人).

The next day, my mother dragged me to the eye doctor’s office.I chose a set of frames and tried to believe my mother when she said they looked really good on me.The doctor said the glasses would be ready soon. But I wasn’t ready at all. When the glasses arrived, the eye doctor put them on my face and walked me out onto the sidewalk in front of his office.Looking up from my shoes, I found myself in a whole new world—one filled with clear pictures, bright colours, and fine detail everywhere I looked.I could also see my mother smiling as she watched me see the world in a whole new way.On that first day, they were a present.
But then Monday morning came, and I had to face what I feared: the kids in the classroom.I was frightened that some naughty boys would call me “four eyes”.However, it didn’t happen as I feared it would do.When I entered the classroom, Lily, my best friend, showed me a big smile, saying, “Wow! How beautiful your glasses are!” Even, during the maths class, for the first time I raised up my hand and answered the question because I finally saw the blackboard clearly. So don’t be afraid of what you think.Maybe it would open a brand new world.
