[重庆一中2024开学考试]I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a stand-up comedian in 2003.I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer—I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician—but all that came to an end after I found people around didn’t want to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. But by the time I tried my first joke, people were properly laughing. I was enchanted (使陶醉) by the charm and power of comedy.

Now, I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100.After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an old person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
Last year, I was recognised as the oldest female stand-up comedian in the world. My friends think I’m mad. They don’t understand why I wouldn’t choose to take it easy. But I like engaging with the world and I’ve got to be in touch to be funny. I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored.

[河南驻马店2024高二联考]Telling jokes requires intelligence, creativity, imagination and the ability to tell a story, while listening to jokes is more passive behaviour but it demands attention, intelligence and being in the right mood in order to enjoy jokes. There are also clear similarities between joke tellers and appreciators. A new study takes this further and tries to find other connections between creating humour and appreciating humour.
The authors carried on the cartoon caption (说明文字) task.159 participants were shown more than 30 cartoons without captions and were asked to come up with a funny caption for each one of them. Later, independent judges rated those captions based on how funny they were.
The results showed that those who produced the funniest captions also produced more captions overall. What was more interesting was that creating funny captions was negatively related to appreciation of humour. In other words, funny people tend to find jokes less funny than non-funny people. It is not clear why this is the case, but it might be that creators of

Moreover, outgoing people and those who are open to new experiences found the cartoons funnier, but surprisingly, outgoing people are less likely to be funny. This is consistent with my own research that found comedians were more withdrawn than the general population.
Appreciation and production of humour are two different cognitive (认知的) tasks, each with unique characteristics. This is why when someone tells you he or she has a great sense of humour, you should ask, “Are you good at telling jokes or do you tend to laugh more?”

Lesson 2 Why Do We Need Humour?
Part Ⅱ 拓展阅读训练

A
[河南洛阳2024高二期中]Everybody likes to laugh sometimes, whether at a funny joke, an amusing incident or a comical photograph or sound. The great thing is that once we’ve had a good laugh, we feel happier. It would seem, therefore, that bringing a bit of humor into more serious situations might be good for us.
Places like a humorless office or a tense classroom could sometimes do with a good dose of laughter. Seeing the funny side of things can certainly lift our spirits and that in turn can make us feel better about what we’re doing. Maybe we should get inspiration from Steve Carlisle, president of General Motors of Canada. He says “Humor can help people feel more relaxed, more comfortable and thus be more efficient at what they do.” Humor can be used by teachers in the classroom too. It’s a good way to break the ice with students and create a more relaxed atmosphere which is good for learning.

But we have to be careful: Not everyone laughs at the same things. While some of us may admire a work colleague or fellow student for their well-told joke, others may consider them offensive! According to Professor Schweitzer, a worker or boss who successfully uses humor is seen as both confident and competent, which in turn increases his or her status. His study Risky Business: When Humor Increases and Decreases Status also found that someone who tells inappropriate jokes is also seen as confident but they’re also regarded as incompetent.
So telling the right jokes in the office or classroom can spread some happiness. A study published in the Journal of Behavioral and Applied Management found for healthcare workers, emotional exhaustion was significantly lower among those who experienced greater levels of fun at work. And other research has discovered that teams who share more jokes give more supportive and constructive statements to each other and that’s no joke!

[辽宁名校联盟2025高二联考]While AI can beat us at chess, driving cars, and even composing music, making us laugh seems to be its final frontier.
My musical comedy, Artificially Intelligent, was inspired by the time I asked AI to write me a show based on my life, and it gave me some madly terrible results. I performed some materials generated by AI in the show, and I even made it write a song for an audience member on the spot, and it was always funny in its awfulness. It generated songs telling the audience member who is a doctor to hit the eyes of her co-worker who she is always arguing with. However, this wasn’t independent thinking; we had to feed AI as much information as possible to get any results from it. When it comes to actually getting AI to create jokes on its own, it can’t.

56
The problem with AI and comedy is its lack of human nuance (细微差别) that makes something funny. AI might be able to create a joke structure, but it does not have the ability to pull material from personal experience. It lacks a point of view, situational awareness, context, and cultural awareness needed for good comedy. Irony (讽刺), a complex form of human communication, is hard for AI because of its reliance on context, tones, and cultural knowledge. Unlike humans, AI can’t infer meaning beyond clear statements. Irony involves saying one thing but meaning another, relying on shared context, but AI only processes text and can’t pick up audio and visual cues for irony. AI must signal it’s making a joke.
As of now, though AI has made impressive progress in some areas, it is absolutely not funny, but in the future theoretically yes. When technology advances to the point where robots are walking around with free will and independent thinking, experiencing life and potentially even emotions, they would theoretically begin to have enough viewpoints to create comedy, or an activity that voices their experience of being an AI.However, this means AI would create its own culture which would only be relatable to other AIs.

The truth is that audiences are really enjoying the AI-generated materials in my show, even if the joke is bad. But—technically—does that make it funny?

1.Why does the author mention the comedy Artificially Intelligent?( )
C
A.To introduce a successful AI comedy.
B.To confirm the application of AI in music.
C.To illustrate AI’s limitations in making jokes.
D.To recommend the musical comedy to readers.
解析 推理判断题。根据第一段内容和第二段中的“My musical comedy, Artificially Intelligent, was inspired by the time I asked AI to write me a show based on my life… it was always funny in its awfulness.”

C
A.What AI jokes are made up of.
B.How AI understands the meaning of irony.
C.Why AI fails to create a good joke actually.
D.Whether AI can learn from funny experiences.

D.It will develop its own culture of humour.
解析 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段内容“… an activity that voices their experience of being an AI.However, this means AI would create its own culture which would only be relatable to other AIs.”

[河南洛阳创新发展联盟2025高二月考]Humour has long been recognised for its positive effects, even in the darkest times. Laughter serves as a bridge, helping individuals get through pain. This is shown in Amy Herzog’s new play, Mary Jane. The play balances humour and heartbreak, providing a fresh idea on the trials of caregiving and the strength of the human spirit.
Mary Jane tells the story of a single mother who raises her disabled son, Alex. The play explores friendship, unconditional maternal love, hope and despair. Despite all the challenges she faces, Mary Jane’s life is filled with humour, offering the audience brief respite (喘息) from her emotional trouble.
The play focuses on the characters’ emotional and psychological experiences rather than the physical presence of Alex, who is mostly hidden from the audience. This is achieved by showing the influence of Alex’s condition through the eyes of those who care for him. The audience feels the weight of his absence and his various needs, which take up most of Mary

Jane’s life. Mary Jane tries hard to meet the demands of her job while managing her son’s constant medical needs. Her interactions with the supporting characters show the importance of community support and humour that help her cope with her daily struggles. One of the most moving parts of the play is the depiction of Mary Jane’s interactions with other mothers of disabled children. They exchange advice, encourage and entertain each other with humour.
Norman Cousins, a professor, recorded his recovery from a severe illness through daily laughter. Cousins discovered that ten minutes of genuine laughter had an anaesthetic (麻醉的) effect and gave him at least two hours of pain-free sleep. His findings show humour’s physical and psychological benefits.
Research also supports the importance of laughter and humour, showing that they can reduce stress, improve moods and resilience. Humour positively and directly affects people’s health. This indicates that humour could buffer people against stress and improve overall mental health.

[四川宜宾2024高二期中]I am a big laugher. I’ve been told that even in a room of a thousand people, you can always hear me laughing over the crowd. For me, laughter is the ultimate form of embodied joy. And by “embodied”, I mean that my whole body is involved when I laugh. On the inside, it’s like a bubbling (冒泡的) fountain of joy spilling out all over the place.
But what is joy, anyway? Life can be terrible, but if you decide to follow the sound of the joy fountain, you will find joy showing up in all kinds of places: pets playfully bouncing around, kindness, or even in nothingness.
How can joy be found? A friend moved into a new apartment and needed some help, so I helped him. Afterwards, he was obviously so much happier and at ease. I noticed that playing even a small part in his happiness brought me great joy, and I took a moment to let this feeling of embodied joy in. We can practise letting joy in by noticing how it feels to smile.

Where does your body light up when you smile? When I smile, it makes me want to take a deep breath, and I notice my shoulders and belly relaxing. When I embody caring and loving, it feels great!
Sadly, many of us are unaware of joy, or suspicious of it. Maybe you are afraid to open up to joy, or maybe you are so unfamiliar with what joy feels like that you ignore or resist it when it comes knocking. No one, other than you, owns your happiness, but you might unknowingly block feelings or experiences that help you embody joy. The fact is that when you can’t embody joy, you miss out on one of life’s essential vitamins.
Want more joy? Don’t be afraid to look silly. Silliness helps us take things less personally. It helps us see the world the way a kid does. When we can find more joy in the small things of everyday life, we can embody happiness, rather than just pursuing it.

[中国人大附中2025高二月考]Jokes and humour are often thought of as unimportant. If the lawyer defending you in court couldn’t stop joking, you’d be understandably alarmed.
However, regarding humour as insignificant is a mistake. Humour, jokes and laughter have a vital role to play in human behaviour and interaction. They are a powerful part of social bonding and are genuinely beneficial for health via their stress-relieving properties.
Why do we respond, in such powerful and rewarding ways, to things that objectively make little sense? A substantial amount of data has been generated regarding how humour works in the brain and on the various types of recognisable jokes that trigger it.
Verbal puns (双关语), the most familiar type of jokes, involve words that convey two meanings at once. For example, “Why did the golfer wear two pairs of trousers? In case he got a hole in one.” Here “hole in one” has two possible interpretations. Their simplicity and familiarity mean most people recognise the humour in puns. So, the brain’s humour processing mechanism is still activated.

But where does humour arise from in the brain? Considerable research points towards a specific system in the brain for recognising humour. This system seemingly detects and resolves incongruity (不和谐).Our brains know how things, like languages and behaviours, should work. But, in the real world, many things don’t match our expectations. It seems our brains have evolved a system to recognise when this happens.
If normality is subverted, it means we don’t know what’s going to happen, which creates cognitive (认知的) tension. However, the system that recognises incongruity seemingly also resolves it, by providing an explanation, or at least a confirmation that the incongruity has no negative consequences. This removes the uncertainty, relieving the tension. So, we experience a rewarding feeling. If the incongruity is not resolved, however, humour is absent. If the answer to “Why did the golfer wear two pairs of trousers?” is “In case the metal owl that lived in his gold bag attacked him”, that’s not funny. There’s unresolved incongruity.

[福建厦门大学附属科技中学2024高二期中]It’s well-known that humour can benefit us both physically and mentally. The idea that laughter is the best medicine has been around since ancient times. In his 1905 book, Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious, Sigmund Freud argued that humour is the highest of the psyche’s defence mechanism (机制), capable of turning anxiety into pleasure.
Yet not all types of humour have the same effect on well-being. To better distinguish the effects of different types of humour on mental health, psychologist Rod Martin developed a questionnaire, in which he broke humour down into four styles. Affiliative humour refers to jokes about things that might be commonly considered funny, which is usually employed to improve relationships or make others laugh. Self-enhancing humour involves being able to laugh at yourself, often used as a way for you to deal with stress or difficulties and feel better as a result. Aggressive humour is laughing at the expense of others, which often involves sarcasm (讽刺), teasing, and criticism. Self-defeating humour is the art of putting yourself down to gain favour from your peers.
刷阅读理解

Each style of humour actually carries a different influence, when it comes to mental health. Julie Aitken Schermer, a psychological researcher at the University of Western Ontario, says people using self-enhancing humour are less likely to show signs of loneliness and poor relationships with others. By contrast, both aggressive and self-defeating humour styles can hint at trouble.“We find that self-defeating humour is the most concerning style as it is also linked with loneliness and feelings of not mattering. Those with an aggressive humour style may not experience loneliness as much, however, since they rely on group dynamics (群体动力) in order to make fun of their peers,” says Schermer.
Even if you tend to favour more negative humour styles, there’s no reason to lose heart. Schermer says people can develop a positive, self-enhancing humour style by concentrating on the lighter and more humorous aspects of life. As author Kurt Vonnegut once wrote, “Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.”

[湖北武汉部分学校2025调研]You have probably heard of the Fermi Paradox (费米悖论).Given the high probability that alien (外星的) life exists out there in the universe, why has nobody got in touch yet?
Answers to the paradox range from the optimistic to the downright frightening. It could be that we simply haven’t sent out our own traceable signatures for aliens to find us yet. Or it could be that no aliens will ever make it to the point where they are able to make contact with other species.
In The Three-Body Problem, Chinese writer Liu Cixin’s science fiction, he describes the universe as a dark forest, where each alien society is like a fearful, armed hunter cautiously moving forth. If that hunter finds other life, he is left with the safest course of action: to wipe out any other life forms before they can do the same to him.
Being fearful contributes to humans’ development. Our caution may save our lives when we face a genuine threat.“Take the initiative in the competition, and you may sleep more securely while getting extra resources,” says Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer.

Thankfully, the Dark Forest Theory has lots of issues that are difficult to resolve—the most obvious being that it’s extremely difficult to hide a technologically advanced world.“We’ve never given the slightest thought to turning off all the radar (雷达) and going completely silent because it might be dangerous,” says Shostak.
The Dark Forest Theory also falls apart when you consider the true nature of the universe.“The distances between planets are likely to be so vast that the idea that they would feel the need to attack one another seems odd. Even if they fear each other, the expanse means that they wouldn’t likely need to compete for the near-limitless resources,” says Shostak.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Dark Forest Theory is a nonstarter. Addressing the holes in the theory requires adding the terror factor. Suppose that technological civilisation is going from star to star destroying signs of life whenever planets with life or technology are found. We don’t see them because they’re not there. That’s the really scary thing.

As is known to all, humour has both physical and psychological effects on us.Not only does it help us relieve stress and anxiety, but it also helps develop better and stronger relationships.Without it, many things in our lives would lose their colour.
When I first came to the school, I was a little nervous.Fortunately, my humour helped me quickly integrate into the new environment and get along well with my classmates. So I think humour is something that we can’t attach enough importance to.
Brighten up your every day with humour, which will open the door to a new world for you!
