Have you ever wondered what causes rain? What is rain made of? The water leaves the ground and becomes water vapor (水蒸气) in the air. When the water vapor touches the cold air, it again becomes water and falls to the ground as rain.
It is similar to boiling water. If you boil water in a pot, the heat changes, so the water turns into hot water vapor. When you cover the pot with a piece of glass, the vapor hits the glass and becomes drops of water.
Water is everywhere in nature, and more than 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Water from lakes and oceans slowly evaporates (蒸发) because of the hot sun. The higher the temperature of the water is, the faster it evaporates.
The warm air has more water vapor than the cold air! When the wind blows, it carries the drops of water in the air and raises them. A lot of drops of water get together to form a cloud. When the cloud meets the cold air, the condensation (凝结) happens. And then the cloud becomes tiny drops of water and falls down. These tiny drops of water falling from the sky are what we call rain.
Rain is important for keeping the environment balanced. Without rain, plants would not be able to grow and animals would not be able to live. The water from rain can also wash away dirt in the air. What’s more, rain can cut down on the effects of weather changes!
8. Put the following information into the correct order according to Paragraph 1.
①Water becomes water vapor.
②Water falls on the ground as rain.
③Water vapor touches the cold air.
④Water vapor again becomes water.
A. ①-②-③-④ B. ①-③-④-② C. ①-④-②-③
9. Which picture shows the influence of temperature on water evaporation?
A. B. C.
10. What happens when a lot of drops of water get together?
A. They form a cloud. B. They form the vapor. C. They rise up and fall down.
11. Why is rain important to the environment?
A. Because it causes weather changes.
B. Because it shows the height of the sea level.
C. Because it helps plants grow and animals live.
B 9. A 10. A 11. C
根据第一段“The water leaves the ground and becomes water vapor in the air.” 排第一;再根据第一段“When the water vapor touches the cold air, it again becomes water and falls to the ground as rain.”
根据第三段“The higher the temperature of the water is, the faster it evaporates.” 故选A。
细节理解题根据第四段“A lot of drops of water get together to form a cloud.” 故选A。

New furniture (家具) can be very expensive, so many people don’t think they can easily get a new one. Then you can use them to make the perfect furniture for your room. Start by going to yard sales or markets, both of those are good places to find furniture. If you don’t find what you want at first, keep looking for it. Then you won’t pay much for your furniture.
Once you find the furniture you want, it’s time to change it. Choose a color that will match the rest of what you have in your room, and then get enough paint in that color to do the job. If your table, desk or chair is wooden, you may choose to use wood stain (着色剂).
Before you start painting, be sure you’re wearing old clothing. If you use paint, you may want to start with primer (底漆). Primer covers up old paint; it also helps the new paint stick to the furniture. After the primer is dry, paint your furniture. Now you have an amazing new look for your room!

Simple Actions for a Better Environment
Nowadays, environmental problems are becoming more and more serious. We need to develop good environmental habits to protect our planet.
As middle school students, we can make a difference with small actions. First of all, it’s useful to reuse things in daily life. We can reuse waste by using both sides of the paper and reusing things like water bottles, bags and so on. Secondly, we are supposed to save energy. We can use rainwater to water plants and use water-saving equipment. Remember to turn off lights when we don’t use them. What’s more, we’d better organize some activities to protect the environment, such as planting trees or holding a jumble sale.
By taking these simple actions in our daily lives, we can play a role in protecting our earth for a better environment.
