China has its own “spidermen” in Huangshan, Anhui province, whose task is not to save the world, but to collect litter from mountain tops or pick up phones dropped by travelers. Li Peisheng, 51, is one of the 18 spidermen who rappel (索降) down Huangshan Mountain.
Reporter: Mr. Li, could you tell us about your job?
Li: My job is to rappel down the mountains to collect litter. Huangshan is very famous, with its special views.
Reporter: When did you start this job?
Li: I first worked as a ticket collector in 1997 and became a rappelling cleaner two years later. At first, I was really afraid. The place I rappelled was over 50 meters high. I hit the rocks and hurt myself. But I didn’t give up and learned to keep balanced.
Reporter: How did your family feel about your job?
Li: They didn’t know at first. They heard about it from news reports and wanted me to change jobs. But I try to make them trust me. My job has many rules. We need to be very careful, and in good health.
Reporter: How do you make sure you are safe at work?
Li: Safety is the most important. We usually work in pairs. My first partner was Xie Tianxing, and now it’s Wang Nianfeng. We watch out for each other.
Reporter: Do you have other tasks?
Li: Yes, we’re protectors and guides of the tourists.
Reporter: What’s the change in tourists’ environmental behaviors?

Mei stood outside her grandpa’s room. Her mother, Lina, had always told her not to go inside because it was “too dusty.” But today, while Lina was at work, Mei decided to open the door.
Inside, she saw a wooden box with “China 1987” written on it. Mei opened it and found an old Leica camera. It was dusty but looked like it could still work.
Mei’s hands shook as she held it. She remembered seeing this camera in old photos—her grandfather had been a famous photographer (摄影师) in Beijing before moving to Canada.
Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Mei! What are you doing?” Mei turned and dropped the camera. Lina stood in the doorway, her face pale. She held the door so hard that her fingers turned white.
“Mom, I…” Mei tried to explain, but the words stuck in her throat. “Why did you hide this? Grandpa was a photographer You always said he sold electronics.”
Lina’s voice turned cold. “He left our family for his art. Your grandma worked two jobs while he took photos of storms. Photography isn’t a real job.”
She quickly put the camera back and closed the box. “You should try your best to become a doctor, not wasting time on hobbies.”
Mei felt tears in her eyes “But Dad supports my photography He says…”
“Your father is optimistic. He dreams too much.” Lina stopped. She walked out, leaving Mei alone.
That night, Mei couldn’t sleep. She remembered her grandpa’s words: “Find the light in the dark, mei mei.”
At 2 a.m., she quietly went to the living room. The TV was on, and Lina was asleep on the sofa with a medical book on her leg. Mei took the camera, pointed it at Lina, and pressed the button. The flash woke Lina up.
“Mei? What…” Lina looked at the camera, then softened.
Mei handed her the photo. It showed Lina with messy hair, but her face looked peaceful in the dark light. “You look happy here,” Mei said. “Not like working at the hospital.”
She knelt beside Lina. “Mom, I’ll study hard. But can I also learn photography? Grandpa’s camera…it connects us. Let me show you my world through it.” Lina was silent for a long time. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out an old photo—young Lina, smiling behind the Leica, her father’s arm around her. “Okay,” she whispered.

①Classics are the treasure of the literary (文学) world. For years, people have read them to learn more. As mobile phones become a part of our life, more people are using them to read books. But is this really the best way to learn?
②According to a 2023 report given by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related (相关的) videos jumped by 65.17% year-on-year.
③“There are some classics that I am not interested in but asked to read,” said 14-year-old He Liyan from Jiangsu. “So I usually watch a video about the book to find some interesting stories which can keep me reading.”
④Some people also find classic books really long and hard to understand, so they go to vloggers’ (视频博主) instructions.
⑤“The vloggers also add their own opinions to the instructions, making the book easier to understand,” added He.

⑨Eighteen-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may lower readers’ ability to read by themselves and think deeply.”
⑩But in today’s world, where we can find information so easily on the internet, some people think that reading paper books is old-fashioned. However, it is still important, especially in school. Students should read more and click less.

36. The following sentence can be best put at the end of ______.
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and worries.

37. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

Better Community, Better Life
A good community is like a big family. What can we do to build a better community? I’d like to share some ideas.
First, showing good manners matters. Greeting neighbors with a smile, saying “please” and “thank you”—these small acts make our community warmer.
Second, protecting the environment is key. We can pick up litter, plant more trees, and save water. A clean and green environment makes everyone feel comfortable.
Last, I once joined a community—“Skill-Sharing Day”. Neighbors taught each other skills like cooking, DIY repairs. It made us closer and helped solve daily problems. Such activities can strengthen our community bonds.
Let’s work together to build a better community and enjoy a better life.
