1. Review the main language items learned in the previous period.
2. Lead in the learning topic of this period and introduce the learning objectives.
Step 2 Writing guidance
Activity 2 Studying the organisation and language features of the text (a biography)
Study the organisation and language features by talking about and answering the following questions.
1. What type of writing is this text? How does the writer develop the text?
The text is a biography, which is developed chronologically.
2. Find the descriptions that tell us what Einstein looked like and what kind of person he was.
The descriptions of Einstein’s appearance: Paragraph 5(He had a thick moustache ... received an electric shock.)
Personality: He was smart, courageous, kind, popular, funny, peculiar and forgetful. Paragraph 5 (Although he was a genius, ... his friends’ birthdays. But despite ...loved by his friends and neighbours. There is even a story ... with her homework, In fact, ... help explain things. After many such ... “Pardon me! sorry! Always I am mistaken for Professor Einstein!)
3. What rhetorical devices (修辞手法) are used in the passage? Give examples.
Analogy (类比): as the new Isaac Newton.
Personification (拟人): (hair) stood on end.
Simile (明喻): as though he had just received an electric shock.
Metaphor (隐喻): the doors of academic institutions.
Euphemism (委婉语): passed away。
4. Reconstruct the text by retelling or summarizing it using the above information.
Activity 3 Writing guidance
1. Talk about the steps to write an introduction about someone you admire by following the example of the text.
Step 1: Choose the person you are going to write about. It should be someone you think is great in some way. It can be an ordinary person, such as a parent, a relative, or a friend.
Step 2: Make a list of things that need to be included in your introduction. (e.g. appearance, personality, an impressive story, achievements)
Step 3: Use your notes to write your introduction and sum up how you feel about this person.
2. Read the sample writing to learn more about the organization and expressions to introduce a person.
Sample writing:
Qian Xuesen, who was regarded as “the father of China’s aero space”, was born in 1911 in Shanghai.
In 1935, Qian went to America for further study and was highly thought of by Von Karman because of his excellent marks. Three years later, he earned a doctorate in aerospace science and mathematics in the US. In 1950, hearing the People’s Republic of China had been founded, he overcame a variety of difficulties, and succeeded in coming back to his homeland in 1955.Since 1958 he had been devoted to aerospace science and technology and made great contributions to the cause of China’ s aerospace.
In 2009, he passed away in Beijing and the whole country mourned the great loss of a brilliant scientist.

Activity 6 Summary
Summarize the main contents of this period briefly by reconstructing the text and emphasizing how to write an introduction to about someone you admire.
Homework:
1. Complete the writing and work in pairs to evaluate each other’s writing before handing in the writing.
2. Complete the vocabulary and grammar exercises in Assessing Your Progress.
3. Complete some more exercises in the reference book.
