Step 1 Review
Activity 1 Review
Check the answers to the reading comprehension exercises in reference book to review the main content of the text.
Step 2 Language Focus
(In this step, the teacher explains some of the new and important language items in the context by offering some examples so that the students could comprehend the text better, and also focus on how to use the language items in specific language situations created by the teacher or doing some exercises such as sentence making and blank-filling exercises to help the students to grasp their usages.)
Activity 2 Learning about the new language items
Learn about the following new language items:
1. This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Tu Youyou (co-winner), whose research led to the discovery of artemisinin, a crucial new treatment for malaria.

3. committed adj. 尽心尽力的;坚定的;坚信的
commit vt.承诺;保证;花(钱或时间);干(错事,坏事),犯罪

commitment n.承诺;投入;奉献(后可跟to sth./sb./to do sth.)

5. In 1967, the Chinese government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Tu Youyou was among the first researchers chosen.

e.g. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts and nothing will defeat you. 如果你想挑战自己,与别人的想法无关,也没有什么可以打败你。
辨析:defeat,beat,win
defeat意为“击败”,强调过程和结果,宾语是对手;beat意为“打败,(连续)击打”,宾语是对手;
win意为“赢得,获胜”,宾语是game或prize等。

11. analyse v.分析;分解;化验 analysis n. [c/u]分析(报告)

Activity 3 Text reconstruction
1. Answer more questions about the text.
1) Why is artemisinin crucial and vital?
It has saved hundreds of thousands of people, and has led to improved health for millions of people.
2) What was the background of the discovery of artemisnin?
In 1967, the Chinese government formed a team of scientists with the objective of discovering a new treatment for malaria, and Youyou was among the first researchers chosen.
3) How did Tu Youyou feel about being awarded the prize?
She felt honored/thankful/grateful and proud.
2. Complete the flow chart. Then tell the story of how artemisinin was discovered to reconstruct the text.
Tu Youyou’s team examined over 2,000 old medical texts, and evaluated 280,000 plants (for their medical properties). → They found a medical text suggesting using the extract from sweet wormwood to treat a fever. → They tested (a collection of) dried wormwood leaves. → They tried boiling fresh wormwood and using the liquid, but this did not work either. → They used a lower temperature to draw out sweet wormwood extract. → They tested the medicine on themselves to see if safe. →They tested the medicine on malaria patients. → The medicine became a standard treatment for malaria.
