Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Leading in (Opening Page) Activity 1 Leading-in 1. Lead in the teaching topic by looking at the picture and discuss the following questions. 1) Where are these people probably? They are at the Nobel Prize ceremony. 2) Who is the woman in the photo? This is Tu Youyou. She is a scientist from China. 3) What is happening in this photo? In this photo, Tu Youyou is receiving the award from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. 4) What more can you find from this photo? The Nobel Prize award ceremony was held in a magnificent hall. Everyone was standing up when Tu Youyou received her award 2. Talk about the saying/quote: Try to become not a man of success, but try rather to become a man of value. ——Albert Einstein English meaning: To be a man of value is more meaningful than to be a man of success. Chinese meaning: 试着不成为一个成功的人,而是试着成为一个有价值的人。 3. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit at the bottom of the opening page and make the students have a general idea of what they are going to learn in this unit. (Get the students to read the comprehensive learning objectives at the bottom of the page.) 4. Introduce the learning objectives of this period. Step 2 Pre-reading Activity 2 Discussion and prediction 1. Introduce the learning objectives of this period. 2. Read the title of the text and observe the format to identify the type of writing. Where would you most likely read this passage? What kind of writing is it? The passage is probably from a newspaper. It is a news story. 3. Predict the main content of the text. 1) If you were the journalist, what aspects would you write about according to the title? I would write about when, where, and why she was awarded the Nobel Prize and background information. 2) What does this text mainly talk about? Tu Youyou was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of artemisinin which saves lots of people worldwide. 4. Discuss the two questions and share answers. 1) What kind of person makes great discoveries? Most great discoverers are brilliant and hard-working. Many are perfectionists who are unwilling to accept anything but the best. 2) Which is more important for making a great discovery, talent or effort? I think both talent and effort are important for making discoveries. If a person doesn’t have some talent, it is possible that even though he or she works hard, it will be difficult to succeed. On the other hand, people—even those with great talent—rarely achieve anything without putting in efforts. Step 3 While-reading Activity 3 Reading comprehension 1. Scan the text and find descriptive words about Tu Youyou. And try to find out detailed information such as who, when, why, where and what to complete the reading comprehension exercises in Activity 3 on Page 3. 1) Descriptive words. Descriptive words are words that clarify a characteristic of a noun or pronoun to from a better impression of the subject described. For example, large is a descriptive adjective because it tells you the size of a person, place, or thing. Generally we can use adjectives, participles and adverbs as descriptive words. 2) Descriptive words about Tu Youyou in the text: committed, patient. 3) Answers to the reading comprehension exercise: 1. D; 2. C; 3. C, D. 2. Read the text again for both main idea and detailed information, answer the questions in Activity 4 on P3 and summarize the main idea of each paragraph. 1) Answers to the questions: (1) Why is the discovery of artemisinin important? Artemisinin has saved hundreds of thousands of lives and has improved the health for millions of people. (2) What was the key to getting a good extract from the wormwood? Using a lower temperature to draw out the extract. (3) What numbers are mentioned in the text? What do they suggest? 200 million; 600,000; 100,000; 2,000; 280,000; 380; 190. These numbers suggest three things: how big a health problem malaria is, how much time Tu Youyou spent in looking for a possible new treatment for malaria, and how patient and persistent Tu Youyou and her team were to tackle the disease. (4) Why is Tu Youyou considered a great person? She is considered a great person because through her efforts many lives have been saved. 2) Main idea of each paragraph. Paragraph 1: Tu Youyou was awarded Nobel Prize because of discovering artemisinin. Paragraph 2: Tu Youyou’s personal experiences. Paragraph 3: The process of discovering artemisinin. Paragraph 4: Tu Youyou owes her success to her team and traditional Chinese medicine. Step 4 Post-reading Activity 4 Talking and learning about the features of a news story 1. The title: TU YOUYOU AWARDED NOBEL PRIZE = TU YOUYOU WAS AWARDED NOBEL PRIZE. Some words are omitted to make if shorter and briefer. 2. Text structure and features. 1) 新闻报道的第一段或第一句是导语(news lead/introductory portion),是报道最基本内容的概括,往往包含着最重要、精彩、吸引人的新闻事实,这是新闻报道开头的语体特色。 导语通常回答五个问题:who、what、when、where、why/how,这五个方面被称为新闻的五大要素。 2) 正文中的句子常是陈述句,一般过去时占主导地位,行文中多用主动语态,少用被动语态。常用各种并列、从属和插入的手法,以达到凝练的效果。 3. Thinking about the features of a news story. 1) Why is passive voice often used in a news report? To be more objective. 2) Why does it contain more facts than personal opinions? To be more objective and more convincing. Activity 5 Thinking, discussion and text reconstruction 1. What are some good qualities of Tu Youyou? And give example. Committed/determined, patient, modest, creative, brave and selfless. 2. What qualities do you think a great people should have? Intelligent, determined, persistent, considerate, active, self-discipline, imaginative, open-minded, independent, devoted, patriotic, …. 3. Guide the students to reconstruct the text by summarizing the main content of the text. Step 5 Summary and evaluation Activity 6 Summary 1. (The teacher) Guide the students to summarize the main content of the text and features of a news story. 2. Encourage the students to learn some good qualities from Tu Youyou. Activity 7 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your reading comprehension of the text content?
