Mathew Webb(马修韦伯 ) is the first man who swam across the Channel.
On Aug 24th, 1875, he spent over 21 hours to swim across the English Channel from Dover to Calais.
Gertrude Caroline Ederle was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion. Gertrude’s mother introduced her to swimming when she was a little child and she fell in love with swimming after the family attended an exciting swimming exhibition .
Gertrude first came into world focus at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. As an athlete (运动员), she owned 29 world and U.S. records, most in races from 100 to 500 meters. The long-distance swims began in 1925. This was a popular sport at the time. The most challenging(挑战) was the English Channel, which had been conquered (征服) by five men but never by a woman. As a member of the group who believed that marathon swims were a good way to establish equality(建立平等) with men, Gertrude volunteered to swim the Channel.
Gertrude’s first try, in the summer of 1925, was unsuccessful. Gertrude returned to France for her next try in June of 1926. She entered the water at 7:05 a.m.of August 6. The weather that day certainly was not good. High winds and strong tides made every stroke a struggle. During that time, her supporters read letters from her mother to keep her spirits up. Her father promised to buy her a red sports car if she kept swimming. Her sister sung popular songs. Fourteen hours and 31 minutes after she started, Gertrude walked out of the water at Kingsdown, bleary-eyed and chilled to the bone(睡眼惺忪,浑身冰冷). Gertrude had beaten the old record by almost two hours. She became the first female to swim across the Channel.
“It was just that everybody was saying it couldn't be done,” Gertrude once explained of her Channel crossing. “Well, every time somebody said that, I wanted to prove it could be done.”In 1928, Gertrude started experiencing serious problems with her hearing because of her two Channel swims. By the 1940s, Gertrude had almost completely lost her ability to hear. However, She still spent most of her public time teaching deaf children to swim. She enjoyed staying with them.
