The zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province, is called the “world's loneliest zoo” because few people visit it. Most of the animals there are unhealthy. Luo Yingjiu began keeping animals at home in the 1980s. After seeing wild animals kept in cages for sale at a market, Luo bought them and took them home to give them medical treatment. He released (释放) those able to live on their own into the wild and continued to raise those that could not live independently. There were so many animals in his house that the local government suggested he open a zoo. With the government's financial aid, the zoo was opened in 1989, the only one in the city at that time. During its peak time, the zoo had some big animals, including a tiger and a lion. The business later became worse because visitors were not interested in the zoo's “old, weak, sick and disabled” animals. Using his pension (退休金) to operate the zoo, Mr Luo refused to listen to other people's advice to close it. “It is not just a zoo; it provides the habitat for the animals,” he explained. “If the zoo is closed, where can these animals go? They cannot even survive in the wild.” As he operates the zoo, he keeps on rescuing animals. A black bear with one paw injured was saved 17 years ago. A dog named Dianzi was saved when its former owner planned to abandon (遗弃) it. A monkey that has been at the zoo for nearly 30 years is almost blind because of camera flashes from visitors who took photos. For those animals that died, Luo buried them on the nearby mountain. Luo said he remembers every animal's name. “Animals and humans are born equal,” he said. “We should respect their right to survive.” 1.Why is the zoo called the “world's loneliest zoo”? A.There are few animals in the zoo. B.Few people know the old man. C.There aren't many people visiting the zoo. D.The gatekeeper lost family members. 根据第一段中的“The zoo in Enshi, Hubei Province, is called the ‘world's loneliest zoo’ because few people visit it.” 2.How did Luo get the animals originally? A.By buying some animals locked in cages. B.By stealing or hunting some big animals. C.By finding animals released from other zoos. D.By picking up dying animals in the wild. 根据第二段中的“After seeing wild animals kept in cages for sale at a market, Luo bought them and took them home to give them medical treatment.” 3.What was the reason why Luo's business went worse? A.Visitors took no interest in the unhealthy animals. B.Local government refused to offer financial support. C.He used up all of his pension so that the zoo was closed. D.Children were frightened by the wild tiger and lion. 根据第二段中的“The business later became worse because visitors were not interested in the zoo's ‘old, weak, sick and disabled’ animals.” 4.Which of the following best describes Luo Yingjiu? A.Adventurous and humorous. B.Warm-hearted and determined. C.Creative and outgoing. D.Generous and funny. B( ) “For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to climb a peak, cross a frontier, or document a new species or landscape. Now in some cases, we're racing to be the last,” said Paige McClanahan. In recent years, a growing industry has been stimulated by climate change — last-chance tourism.According to an organic-recycling and wasteprocessing company, last-chance tourism is a kind of tourism geared toward seeing the last of something due to climate change. As temperatures and water levels rise, this could mean seizing the last chance to see the Great Barrier Reef, an Arctic glacier and a remote island that is sinking. As millions of tourists rush to these _________ destinations, some are taking advantage of the increasing demand to spread environmental awareness. One tourist spot, the Sea of Ice in France, opened an exhibit to educate visitors on glaciers and climate change. This educational push seems to be having an impact, as a survey showed that 80% of the visitors would try to learn more about the environment and how to protect it while 70% said that they would reduce their water and energy use. imperiled However, the last-chance tourism industry may become kind of our concern. As more and more people flood into these areas in a panic to see them before they are gone, they in fact contribute to the increased greenhouse gas emissions and over-tourism, leading to their destruction.Just as many scholars put it, last-chance tourism is a paradox (悖论). Although tourists may acknowledge the broader risks and importance of climate change, it's even more important to connect the responsibility of the individual tourism to the future of our planet. It's not just about understanding the need to stop climate change; it's even more important to avoid making it worse. 5.Why does the author quote Paige McClanahan's words in paragraph 1? A.To make prediction. B.To lead into the topic. C.To analyze reasons. D.To show the author's attitude. 根据第一段以及第二段中“In recent years, a growing industry has been stimulated by climate change — last-chance tourism.” 6.What does the underlined word “imperiled” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Endangered. B.Abandoned. C.Developed. D.Well-protected. 根据画线词下文“This educational push seems to be having an impact ... they would reduce their water and energy use.” 7.Which of the following can best describe “last-chance tourism”? A.A technology-related industry. B.A nature-friendly journey. C.A knowledge-based course. D.A double-edged sword. 根据第三段及倒数第二段中“As more and more people flood into these areas ... leading to their destruction.” 8.In which column of a magazine can we read this passage? A.Food & Health. B.Society & Economy. C.Nature & Human. D.Language & Culture. Scientists from the UK recently visited the Arctic, the northernmost region of Earth, to test out a method of “refreezing” its ice.The Arctic is extremely cold, but the ice is melting due to global warming.Over the past 30 years, the oldest and thickest parts have shrunk by as much as 95%.This is a concern because the melting ice causes sea levels to rise. ___, whereas the white ice reflects it back into space. 9 In January, a research team traveled to Cambridge Bay, in Arctic Canada.___.This water spread out across the ice and froze, replacing the snow that usually lies there.Having a layer of fresh ice rather than snow on top reduces the temperature of the ice. ___, making the ice thicker by natural means too. 10 11 The plan is for people who live in the region to measure the thickness of the ice over several weeks.___.Even if the idea works and the ice gets thicker, it could still take about 10 million pumps to reverse the melting ice all over the Arctic.“That's a lot of pumps ...but it's not absolutely out of this world,” said Shaun Fitzgerald from the University of Cambridge, which is involved in the expedition. ___.One involves sprinkling powder over the ice to reflect the Sun's rays back, which could reduce heat and the rate of melting.Another project would install underwater curtains in front of glaciers to protect them from being melted by warm seawater. 12 13 A.Experts are exploring other ideas too B.It also causes the seawater under it to freeze faster C.This also limits the environmental impact of the study D.It also makes the planet warmer because the dark water absorbs the Sun's heat E.They cut a hole in the ice and used a pump to bring seawater from under the ice up to the surface F.The pump used by the scientists is powered by green hydrogen, a gas produced using renewable energy G.The team hopes to add about three feet of ice in order to stop it from melting completely during the summer 9.解析:选D 根据上文“This is a concern because the melting ice causes sea levels to rise.” 10.解析:选E 根据下文“This water spread out across the ice and froze, replacing the snow that usually lies there.” 11.解析:选B 根据上文“Having a layer of fresh ice rather than snow on top reduces the temperature of the ice.”
