Where am I? What am I doing? If you're one of my 500 friends online, you'll always be the first to know.
What am I doing?”
1.My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance, so I'm constantly posting updates on social media — whether I'm having a coffee, on my way to school, watching TV ...even when I'm in the shower.
2.At 7.50 pm, I'm still scrolling through my friends' silly posts and photos. Before I know it, it's 9.30 pm and I still haven't moved an inch from the sofa.
My sketchbook and pencils are always within easy reach, so I'm constantly drawing pictures — whether I'm in the park, on a bus, waiting in line ... even when I'm eating.
1.My friends try to drag me away from my phone, but as soon as I'm alone again, I'm desperate to get back to the online world and the intense activity that it provides.
2.Since I spend so much time socialising online, I keep delaying things that are important in my real life: homework, tasks, connecting with my friends and family members in a meaningful way.
①I don't know where he is, but as soon as I know his address, I'll give him the book that I bought yesterday.
②Since he is my best friend, I like to share my joy and sorrow that I have in my real life with him.
1.My best friend left the table for 30 minutes because he had to take a call.
常见的表示原因的从属连词还有:as、since、now that、in that等。
2.Alcoholics who want to quit drinking can avoid booze, but how do we give up our phones?
常见的表示转折关系的词语有:but、yet、still、however、in fact、as a matter of fact、in spite of、despite等。
His mother won't be there, but his father might.
He got the job because he was the best candidate.
1.I live in a university dorm with a couple of great roommates. I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with online. Yet the truth of the matter is: I feel lonely.
2.They say that phones bring people closer together but in reality, my mind is always a million miles away.
①The wise man knows he knows nothing; the fool thinks he knows all.
②They say that emails bridge the gap between friends but in fact, my thoughts are drifting cloud far above the connection.

A
Have you ever heard the saying “If you want a friend, be one.”? Here is how a new teacher made friends with the girls and boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, “Good morning! How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I'd like to know each of you. I am sure we will enjoy working together.” Everyone felt that she meant what she said because of her sweet voice and her friendly look.
She told the girls and boys her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them some of the things she liked to do and she was hoping to do with them during the year.
Then she said to the class, “Now you know my name and the things I like and I want to know your names and the things you like. Then I will feel that I know you.”
Could you make friends by doing the same as this teacher did? One way of getting to know girls and boys in your class is to find out more about them. It is often easy to be friends with those people who have the same hobbies with you. You play the same games and go on journeys together.
You may find that some newcomers in your class miss their old friends and feel strange and lonely. You can invite them to take a walk or to ride bikes with you. You will find many things in common to talk about. Just talking together in a friendly manner is one good way to make friends.

If you feel that making friends as a kid is easy, you're right. “They have a break between lessons and gym classes. They can let their guard down,” says Marisa G. Franco, a sought-after friendship & belonging expert. However, it's not the case for adults. Even though they see their colleagues every day, they still find it never easy to be friends with them.
In the US, for example, a survey by the American Enterprise Institute, found that the number of adults who said they had no close friends had increased four times since 1990, going from 3 percent to 12 percent. “We've never been more disconnected,” says psychologist and author Jody Carrington. Although adults spend time together from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and even late into the night, the fast-paced work pattern dictates that communication is limited to the content of the work, and after work, they immediately go back to homes, leaving no extra energy to have unplanned interactions to develop further friendship.
Research by Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad has shown that loneliness is a major threat to longevity (长寿), the same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or being an alcoholic. People who are lonely or socially cut off have a higher risk of having diseases like depression, dementia and cardiac death. On the another side, healthy friendships can help us a lot, doing better with stress and living happier and longer. Plus, happiness is contagious. Harvard researchers found that when an individual becomes happy, his or her friends who live in a 1.6-kilometre radius have a 25 percent higher chance of getting a boost in happiness, too.
Hence, making and deepening friendships matters more than we imagine. You might think making friends is an inherent skill that doesn't need to be taught. It's not the case. We can all get better at connection if we try. Some experts offer some tricks to make finding connection a little easier.

Get along with roommates!
When I went off to college, I roomed with a friend I had known for five or six years. 9 There are things you don't know about somebody until you live with him. For instance, it turned out that he liked to sleep with the window wide open and under a pile of blankets. I was the opposite. My solution was to average the few inches I preferred the window being open and the two feet he had in mind.
When I studied, I liked to talk to other people. My roommate liked to study quietly, so he disappeared after a week into the library. 10 All the people I ever roomed with noticed their marks going down after moving in with me. Evidently, most people prefer studying silently.
11 In her room, there was a strip of black tape (胶带) that ran along the floor, ran up both opposite walls and continued across the ceiling. She did it in case, I suppose, there should be different ideas of how to decorate the ceiling.
Another roommate of mine at college was much more relaxed. One day, we both returned from a party. He began to throw up on the floor, which annoyed me, but he kept doing so and laughing at the same time. I found myself laughing too. 12
I have heard numerous sad stories of roommates at disagreements with each other. There are rules governing the way roommates should live together. 13 Speaking of respect, I mean certain specific things: Do not eat the other person's food unless you ask first; do not borrow clothes, or pick up money lying around, or take up any other possession of the other person without asking first.
A.I think he was probably wise.
B.But he felt regretful for doing so a few weeks later.
C.We had always got along well until we roomed together.
D.This proved to be harder to give in than I would have thought.
E.Most importantly, it is necessary for the roommates to respect each other.
F.It was hard to get angry at someone who did that and laughed in the meantime.
G.My daughter's room at college demonstrated one solution to roommates having different interests.
