Teaching Methods Pre - listening Discussion (Music Preferences) Listening Comprehension (Opinion & Detail Extraction) Post - listening Survey & Reporting Teaching Aids Textbook, blackboard, multimedia, audio player Teaching Procedure I. Warm - up & Music Talk (7 mins) Daily Question Ask students: “Who’s your favorite singer or musician? Why do you like them? Does their music make you feel a certain way? ” Let 3 - 4 students share, e.g., “I like Taylor Swift – her lyrics are relatable, and her songs make me feel happy.” Lead - in to 1a Say: “Today we’ll talk about music preferences (1a), listen to a conversation about a band (1b, 1c), and survey others about their music tastes (1d).” II. 1a Activity – Favorite Musician Discussion (10 mins) Instruction Show 1a task: “Tell your partner your favorite singer/musician and why. Use phrases like ‘I like... because... Their music makes me feel... ’ ” Example: “I like Jay Chou because his music mixes Chinese and Western styles. It makes me feel proud of our culture.” Student Activity Pairs discuss. III. 1b & 1c Activities – Listening for Band Opinions & Details (18 mins) 1b Pre - listening Show 1b opinions about “The Toms” and tell students: “Listen to Alex and Dave. Write A (Alex) or D (Dave) next to each opinion.” 1b While - listening Play 1b audio. Students mark A/D for each opinion (e.g., “The Toms must be popular” → D). 1c Pre - listening Explain 1c: “Listen again to fill in the band details (name, country, etc.). Focus on specific info.” 1c While - listening Play 1c audio. Students fill in: Band name: The Toms Country: US Number of people: 5 (or as per audio) Kind of music: pop, but sounds like rock Why Alex likes: wakes him up Why Dave likes: loves pop music Play twice. Walk around to help: “‘5 members’ – check the audio again.” IV. 1d Activity – Music Preference Survey (10 mins) Instruction Explain 1d: “Survey friends and parents: What music do they listen to? Why? How does it make them feel? Fill in the chart.” Example: “Friend 1 listens to classical music – helps them focus, makes them feel peaceful.” Student Activity Students take turns surveying. Walk around to guide: “Ask open - ended questions – ‘Why do you like this music? ’ ” Share survey results: “My mom listens to old Chinese songs – they make her feel nostalgic.” V. Summary & Homework (5 mins) Summary Recap key points: 1a: Discussed favorite musicians with reasons and feelings. 1b: Identified speakers’ opinions about a band. 1c: Extracted band details from listening. 1d: Surveyed music preferences of others. Write on the board: Key Listening Skills: Catching opinions and specific details. Homework (1) Write a short report about your 1d survey (e.g., “My friend likes pop because it’s energetic... ”).
