新目标人教版Unit 8 Section B (1a - 1d)教学设计 I. Teaching Aims 1. Knowledge Aims Students can master new words and phrases: pop, rock, band, listen to, be from, full of energy ,wake sb. up, make sb. adj. Comprehend sentences like: “I am listening to a band called ‘The Toms’.” “They are from California, in the United States.” “Listening to The Toms is a good way to wake up.” 2. Ability Aims Improve students' listening skills, especially the ability to catch key information about music and bands. Develop students' speaking skills to talk about their favorite music, singers, and bands, and express reasons and feelings. Enable students to work in pairs and groups effectively, enhancing their cooperative and communicative abilities. 3. Emotional Aims Foster students' interest in different kinds of music. Encourage students to respect diverse musical preferences and express their own opinions bravely. II. Teaching Key Points New vocabulary and expressions related to music. Using the target language to talk about music and bands. Listening for specific information about a band. III. Teaching Difficult Points Understanding the listening materials clearly and accurately. Warming - up (5 minutes) Greet the students and play a short clip of a popular pop song, like "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran. After that, ask: “Do you like this song? What kind of music is it?” Invite several students to share their thoughts. Then, show some pictures of famous singers and bands, such as Taylor Swift, The Beatles. Ask students if they know them and what kind of music they perform. This activity can arouse students' interest in music and lead to the new lesson smoothly. 2. Pre - listening (8 minutes) New words teaching: Show the word cards of “pop”, “rock”, “band” one by one. Pronounce them clearly, /pɒp/, /rɒk/, /bænd/ and explain the meanings. For “pop”, say “Pop music is very popular among young people, with catchy melodies and rhythms.” For “rock”, explain “Rock music usually has strong beats and electric guitars.” And for “band”, give an example “A band is a group of musicians who play music together, like The Rolling Stones.” Let students repeat the words several times. Do a word - matching game. Write some definitions on the blackboard, such as “A kind of music with strong beats and electric guitars” and “A group of musicians who play music together”, and ask students to match them with the new words. 1a activity: Let students look at the instructions in 1a. Read it to them: “Who is your favorite singer or musician? Tell your partner why you like him or her.” Pair students up and give them 3 minutes to discuss. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary. Then, invite some pairs to share their conversations with the class. This activity can let students express their opinions and get them familiar with the topic of music. 3. While - listening (15 minutes) 1b activity: Read the instructions to the students: “Now you will hear a conversation between Alex and Dave. They are talking about a band. Listen and write A for Alex or D for Dave next to each opinion.” Play the recording for the first time. Students only listen. Play the recording again. This time, students listen carefully and write down the answers. Check the answers with the whole class. Ask students to read out their answers and explain how they got them. 1c activity: Read the instructions: “Listen again. Take notes about the band name, the country, the number of people in the band, the kind of music, and why Alex and Dave like to listen to this band.” Play the recording for the third time. Students listen and take notes. After that, check the answers. Write the key information on the blackboard, such as “Band name: The Toms; Country: The United States; Number of people in the band: Five; Kind of music: Pop music; Alex's reason: Because it’s loud and full of energy; Dave's reason: Because it will wake me up and make me happy for the rest of the day”. Explain some key sentences in the listening material if necessary, like “Listening to The Toms is a good way to wake up.” Analyze the structure “动名词短语作主语” here. 4. Post - listening (10 minutes) Pair - work: Let students work in pairs. Ask them to talk about their favorite bands according to the information on the blackboard. They can use the target language like “My favorite band is… They are from… There are… people in the band. They play… music. I like them because…”. Give students 5 minutes to make conversations. Walk around the classroom to monitor and offer help if necessary, such as correcting grammar mistakes or providing some useful words. Invite several pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class. Other students can listen and give comments. 5. Extended speaking (10 minutes) Group discussion: Divide students into groups of four. Pose the question: “If you could form a band, what kind of band would it be? What kind of music would you play? And why?” Give each group 5 minutes to discuss. Encourage them to think creatively and use the English they've learned. Each group selects a representative to report their ideas to the class. Other groups can ask questions or give suggestions. This activity can further improve students' speaking ability and their creativity in music - related topics. 6. Summary (3 minutes) Summarize the new words, phrases, key sentences, and the main content of the listening material about the band. Write important points on the blackboard, such as the new words and the useful expressions for talking about music preferences. Ask students if they have any questions. Answer their questions and clarify any misunderstandings. 7. Homework (2 minutes) Ask students to write a short passage about their favorite band, including the band's basic information, the kind of music they play, and why they like it. Let students listen to an English - language music radio program or watch a music video in English to improve their listening skills and expand their knowledge of music. VII. Teaching Reflection After this class, students should have a better understanding of the new words, phrases and the usage of target language for talking about music and bands. However, some students may still have difficulties in listening comprehension and expressing their ideas fluently. In future teaching, more listening exercises and speaking activities should be provided to help students improve these skills. Also, during pair - work and group - work, some students may not be actively involved.
