Teaching Procedure
I. Warm - up & Tense Review (7 mins)
Daily Dialogue
Invite two students to perform a short dialogue using 1c’s structure:
A: What were you doing when the rainstorm came?
B: I was walking to school.
Praise and highlight past continuous usage: “was walking” (action in progress).
Tense Reminder
Write on the board:
Past Continuous: was/were + doing (action in progress).
Simple Past: verb - ed (completed action).
Explain: “In today’s lesson, we’ll use both tenses to talk about a rainstorm story.”
II. 2a Activity – Listening & Picture Sequencing (10 mins)
Pre - listening
Show 2a pictures (boy in various rainstorm situations: alarm not going off, taking shower, waiting for bus, etc.). Ask: “What do you think happened in each picture? Let’s predict the story order.”
Encourage students to guess, e.g., “First, the alarm didn’t go off. Then he got up late...”
While - listening
Play 2a audio. Tell students: “Listen and number the pictures [1–5] based on the story.”
Play the audio twice. Pause after each play to let students adjust numbers.
Post - listening
Check answers together. Ask a student to explain the sequence: “First, the alarm didn’t go off (picture 2). Then he took a shower (picture 3)...” (actual order depends on audio; guide students to confirm).
III. 2b Activity – Verb Filling with Tenses (12 mins)
Instruction
Show 2b sentences with blanks. Tell students: “Listen again to the 2a audio. Fill in the blanks with the correct verbs (past continuous or simple past).”
Sentences:
I ______ so busy looking for the umbrella that I didn’t see a car coming. (was)
My alarm didn’t go off so I ______ up late. (woke)
I took a hot shower and ______ some warm food. (ate)
I ______ for the bus when it began to rain heavily. (was waiting)
I ______ to the bus stop but I still missed the bus. (ran)
Student Activity
Students listen and fill in blanks. Then, pair - check. Walk around to help, asking “Why is ‘was waiting’ correct here? (action in progress)”.
Check answers:
was (past continuous: busy doing)
woke (simple past: completed action)
ate (simple past: completed)
was waiting (past continuous: action in progress when rain began)
ran (simple past: completed action)
IV. 2c Activity – Story Retelling (10 mins)
Instruction
Explain 2c: “Retell the rainstorm story as a conversation between a TV reporter and the boy. Use the information from 2a and 2b.”
Example dialogue:
TV reporter: Tell us what happened yesterday morning.
Boy: Well, my alarm didn’t go off, so I woke up late...
Student Activity
Students work in pairs (reporter & boy). Walk around to guide, encouraging use of both tenses: “Use ‘was doing’ for actions in progress, ‘did’ for completed actions.”
Invite 2 - 3 pairs to perform. Praise good tense usage, e.g., “‘I was waiting for the bus when it began to rain’ – correct past continuous!”.
V. 2d Activity – Role - play Conversation (11 mins)
Instruction
Show 2d dialogue (Mary & Linda’s calls). Tell students: “Read the dialogue. Practice role - playing, paying attention to past continuous (was helping, was taking, was sleeping) and simple past (called, didn’t pick up).”
Explain new expressions: “pick up” (answer the phone), “need help with homework”.
Student Activity
Students pair up to practice. Walk around to correct pronunciation and tense errors, e.g., “‘I was sleeping’ – not ‘I were sleeping’”.
Invite pairs to perform in front of the class. After each, ask the class to spot good language use, like “Correct use of ‘was + doing’ for actions during calls.”
VI. Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary
Recap key points:
Using past continuous (action in progress) and simple past (completed action) in stories and conversations.
Sequencing events, retelling stories, and role - playing.
Write on the board:
Tense Mix:
