Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came? Section A(3a - 3c) Teaching Objectives By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Understand the passage “The Storm Brought People Closer Together” and answer comprehension questions (3a). Complete sentences with information from the passage, using the past continuous and simple past tenses correctly (3b). Discuss how difficulties (like storms) bring people closer and ways to help each other, using target language (3c). Teaching Methods Passage Reading & Comprehension Questions Sentence Completion with Tense Practice Discussion & Opinion - Sharing Teaching Aids Textbook, blackboard, multimedia Teaching Procedure I. Warm - up & Storm Impact Talk (7 mins) Daily Question Ask students: “What happens to a neighborhood during a storm? What do people do? ” Let 3 - 4 students share, e.g., “People help each other clean up.”, “Neighbors check on each other.” Lead - in to Passage Say: “Today’s passage is about a storm in Alabama. Let’s see how it affected Ben’s neighborhood and brought people closer.” II. 3a Activity – Passage Reading & Question Answering (12 mins) Instruction Show 3a passage and questions: What was the weather like before the heavy rain started? What was the neighborhood like after the storm? Tell students: “Read the passage carefully. Find answers to the questions. Use ‘Guessing Meaning’ for new words (e.g., ‘dying down’ – becoming weaker).” Student Activity Students read individually. Then, discuss in pairs. Walk around to help, asking “What’s the weather before rain? (strong winds, black clouds)”. Check answers: Before heavy rain: Strong winds, black clouds making the sky dark, no light (felt like midnight). After the storm: In a mess (fallen trees, broken windows, rubbish everywhere); but people joined to clean up, bringing families/neighbors closer. III. 3b Activity – Sentence Completion with Tenses (10 mins) Instruction Show 3b sentences. Tell students: “Complete them using information from the passage. Pay attention to past continuous (was/were + doing) and simple past (verb - ed) tenses.” Sentences: When the news on TV was reported, strong winds ________ outside. While Ben’s mom was making sure the radio was working, his dad ________. Ben ________ when the heavy rain finally started. When Ben ________ at 3:00 a.m., the wind ________. Student Activity Students work individually, then pair - check. Walk around to guide, e.g., “For sentence 2, what was Dad doing? (putting pieces of wood over windows – past continuous)”. Check answers: were blowing (past continuous: winds in progress) was putting pieces of wood over the windows (past continuous: action in progress while mom worked) was helping his mom make dinner (past continuous: action in progress when rain started) finally fell asleep; was dying down (past continuous: wind action in progress when Ben slept) IV. 3c Activity – Discussion on Unity (11 mins) Instruction Show 3c discussion questions: “Although the storm broke many things apart, it brought families and neighbors closer together. What other things can bring people closer? How can we help each other in difficulty? ” Explain: “Share your ideas. Think of events like festivals, community work, or helping classmates.” Student Activity Students discuss in pairs. Walk around to encourage, e.g., “Volunteering together can bring people closer. How?”. Invite pairs to share: “Helping classmates with homework brings us closer.” “Community clean - ups or charity events can unite people.” “In difficulty, we can listen to others, share resources, or work together.” V. Summary & Homework (5 mins) Summary Recap key points: Passage about a storm’s impact and community unity. Using past continuous and simple past to retell events. Discussing how difficulties/festivals bring people closer. Write on the board: Key Tenses: Past Continuous: was/were + doing (during the storm). Simple Past: verb - ed (completed actions, e.g., storm ended). Unity Ideas: Storm, festivals, community work. Homework (1) Write a short paragraph (6 - 8 lines) about an event (real or made - up) that brought people closer. Use past continuous and simple past.
