Warm - up & Storm Impact Talk (7 mins) Daily Question Ask students: “What happens to a neighborhood during a storm? What do people do? ” Let 3 - 4 students share, e.g., “People help each other clean up.”, “Neighbors check on each other.” Lead - in to Passage Say: “Today’s passage is about a storm in Alabama. Let’s see how it affected Ben’s neighborhood and brought people closer.” II. 3a Activity – Passage Reading & Question Answering (12 mins) Instruction Show 3a passage and questions: What was the weather like before the heavy rain started? What was the neighborhood like after the storm? Tell students: “Read the passage carefully. Find answers to the questions. Use ‘Guessing Meaning’ for new words (e.g., ‘dying down’ – becoming weaker).” Student Activity Students read individually. Then, discuss in pairs. Walk around to help, asking “What’s the weather before rain? (strong winds, black clouds)”. Check answers: Before heavy rain: Strong winds, black clouds making the sky dark, no light (felt like midnight).
