Do you want to travel around the world? Lexie Alford, from California, America, finished traveling to every country in the world at the age of 21.
Lexie Alford comes from a traveling family. Her mother began her own travel business at a young age, and always took Lexie with her on all of her travels. By the time she was only 18 years old, Lexie had already visited 70 countries. That made her want to visit the rest of the world. In October 2017, Lexie began a trip to visit all 195 countries in the world. Two years later, she finished it.
Lexie used planes, boats and trains to get around. But she liked to travel by train most. “Traveling on trains is slow travel. I can watch the changing views (景色) from the window,” she said.
For Lexie, there’s nothing better than traveling. Even in the hard times, she never thought of giving up. “I’m lucky I made it at last. I felt tired, but it was still an exciting trip. I experienced nothing but love and kindness from the people I met in each and every country,” she said. “And I learned a lot about the world. The world would be so boring if everything was the same everywhere. The differences make discovering new cultures such a beautiful experience.”
Lexie hopes others, especially women and young people, can go out and see the world. Her biggest goal is to encourage others to push their limits (极限), no matter how big or small they may be. We live in such a big and beautiful world. Why not spend some time traveling just like Lexie?

In today’s busy world, more of us are experiencing tiredness and fatigue (极度疲劳). Experts say there is an increase in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) (慢性疲劳综合征). This is a disorder that makes us feel quite tired. That tiredness does not go away even if we rest. A sleep expert said, “Our way of living is characterized by (以……为特点) always being connected, feeling a lot of pressure, and not getting enough sleep.” What’s more, an expert said people with CFS suffer from a lack of energy that affects their daily life. She said there was no cure for CFS, but a good diet and enough sleep could help to manage symptoms.
An expert in preventative (预防的) medicine offered some advice about how to deal with fatigue and a lack of sleep. He has a three-step bedtime plan. Step one is to turn the lights off because light keeps our brain active. Blue light from phones is particularly harmful. The second step is to keep the room temperature at around 19℃. A cool room helps to reduce body temperature, which helps sleep. The final step is to reduce all noise. As for food, a life coach recommended we eat bananas to help us get a better night’s rest. He said bananas contain chemicals that help us sleep.
34. Why does chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) make people feel tired according to the passage?
A. Because people with CFS don’t like to rest.
B. Because people with CFS do too much exercise.
C. Because resting can’t help cut the tiredness of CFS.
D. Because the tiredness of CFS can be increased by resting.
35. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Now there is no effective medicine to cure (治愈) CFS.
B. Getting CFS is becoming more common among us in today’s world.
C. More and more people are getting all kinds of illnesses in today’s world.
D Medical experts should try their best to develop medicines that can treat CFS.
36. What can we know from the second paragraph?
①A healthy diet may aid in symptom management of CFS.
②A three-step bedtime plan can cure people with CFS.
③Blue light from phones is bad for our brain.
④A cool room temperature is good for sleeping
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ③④ D. ①④
37. What is the meaning of the underlined word “recommended”?
A. asked B. suggested C. answered D. refused
38. Where does the passage probably come from?
A. A fairy tale. B. An English fiction.
C. A fashion guidebook. D. A health magazine.
【答案】34. C 35. B 36. C 37. B 38. D
根据第一段“This is a disorder that makes us feel quite tired. That tiredness does not go away even if we rest.”,可知慢性疲劳综合征患者休息也无法减轻疲惫,所以感到累。故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。第一段首句“Experts say there is an increase in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)”是核心,主要讲在当今世界,患慢性疲劳综合征在我们中变得更普遍。故选B。
【36题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“a good diet and enough sleep could help to manage symptoms”,可知健康饮食和良好的睡眠可帮助控制CFS症状,但这个不在第二段,所以①错误;文中说三步睡前计划是应对疲劳和睡眠不足,不是治愈CFS,②中“cure(治愈)”错误;原文是“light keeps our brain active. Blue light from phones is particularly harmful.”,可知光线让大脑保持活跃,手机蓝光尤其有害,③正确;根据“A cool room helps to reduce body temperature, which helps sleep.”,可知凉爽室温对睡眠好,④正确。所以③④正确,故选C。
【37题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“As for food, a life coach recommended we eat bananas to help us get a better night’s rest.”
D
How would we live on Mars?
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System. Sometimes Mars is also called the “Red Planet”. Mars is the second closest to Earth and it is easy to see in the night sky. Like Earth, it has clouds, winds, seasonal weather and mountains and other familiar features. A day on Mars is about 24 hours and 37 minutes, while a day on Earth is about 23 hours and 56 minutes. Humans have started to explore Mars since the 1960s.
Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, is considering getting people to go to Mars and finally setting up a base that can serve as an actual city, supporting one million people there.
To build a city on Mars, rockets should be sent to Mars continually until there are enough resources (资源). The SpaceX team will build rockets that are able to be used 1,000 times. With the rockets, spaceships with people and things will be sent to Mars. The spaceship is central to the plan. Each spaceship can carry up to 100 people and about 450 tons of things at a time and it will take about 80 days to get to Mars. To support the project, SpaceX is going to build 1,000 spaceships.
Because it is really cold on Mars, human-friendly living spaces will be built underground. On the ground, spaces will be built with special glass with plant life inside, where humans could walk around without spacesuits. As for food, plants could grow in water instead of soil on solar-powered (太阳能的) farms.
“There is a good chance that we will not succeed,” Elon Musk says, “but we are going to do our best and try to make as much progress as possible.” Let’s hope that we will live a better life on Mars in the future.

A. It’s the largest planet. B. It’s the fourth closest to Earth.
C. It’s the second planet from the Sun. D. It has something in common with Earth.

A. To build rockets to fly people to Mars.
B. To have one million people live on Mars.
C. To carry things from Mars back to Earth.
D. To make Mars a place for people to have fun.
41. What is one of the characteristics of the living spaces to be built on Mars?
A. They will be built above the ground.
B. People will need to wear spacesuits inside.
C. They will be powered by nuclear (原子能的) energy.
D. They will be made of special glass with plant life inside.
42. How does Musk feel about the plan?
A. It is a piece of cake.
B. He is sure to succeed.
C. He may not make it but others will.
D. He knows it may fail but he will try.
43. What is the structure of the article?
A. B. C. D.

How would we live on Mars?
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second-smallest planet in the Solar System. Sometimes Mars is also called the “Red Planet”. Mars is the second closest to Earth and it is easy to see in the night sky. Like Earth it has clouds, winds, seasonal weather and mountains and other familiar features.

The Power of Determination (决心)
Jack Smith came to school first every morning to start the fire in a stove (炉子) so that the classroom was warm before his teachers and classmates arrived.
One morning, the school caught fire. Jack seriously hurt his legs and he was taken to a nearby hospital. When the danger passed, he overheard the doctor telling his mother that he might, never walk again.
The brave boy made up his mind. He would walk. But unfortunately, his legs were so thin and lifeless that he could hardly move.
After he came home from the hospital, his mother would massage (按摩) his little legs every day, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet, his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever.
One sunny day, his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of sitting there, he threw himself from the chair. He pulled himself across the grass, dragging (拖) his legs behind him.
He walked his way to the fence. With great effort, he raised himself up on the fence and dragged himself along, determined that he would walk. He started to do this every day until he wore a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence. There was nothing he wanted more than to develop life in those legs.
Finally through his daily massages, his persistence (坚持) and his strong determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk slowly, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, then to run to school, to run for fun. Later in college he made the track team.
