Animal shelters are used to taking in stray(dogs, but this pup named Lilo came
to McKamey Animal Center off the street-with an added surprise-a note.
"We received a call that there was a large dog running around a neighborhood,"said
Lauren Mann, director of advancement at the Chattanooga-based shelter."So,our animal
protection team went out and picked her up as a stray and when they put her on the truck we
found the note.
The note read:"Please love me.My mom can't keep me and is homeless with two kids.
She tried her best but can't get help-I cost too much for her.She really loves me and I'm a
great dog.”
"It is one of the saddest things I've ever read,"Mann told CBS News."The last line
really hit us all here-Please don't abuse me.
The shelter staff posted about Lilo on social media, hoping to connect with her owner.
About 24 hours after posting their TikTok video explaining Lilo's story, they got a call from
someone saying she was Lilo's mom.
After being separated,Lilo and her family had a "wonderful reunion"at the animal
center,Mann said."It was very clear when Lilo entered the room that it was her family,"
Mann said."Everyone was extremely happy;there was not a dry eye in the room. The kids
were also just as excited, and emotional as everyone else.
While centers like McKamey provide shelter for dogs, they also provide resources for
families who love their pets, but might not be able to keep them due to cost.Mann said they'll
give food and supplies to families struggling to pay for their pets'needs. They'll even help the
family find a pet-friendly home.
The goal of animal shelters is to keep dogs like Lilo happy and safe-and sometimes that
means going above and beyond to reunite them with the family that loves them.
1.Why did Lilo become homeless?
A.An accident took place.
B.Her owner didn't like her.
C.She got lost on her way home.
D.Her owner faced some difficulty.
2.How did the shelter staff find Lilo's owner?
A.By spreading some notes.
B.By sharing her video online.
C.By making some phone calls.
D.By posting some photos online.
3.Which of the following can best describe Lauren Mann?
A.Diligent and efficient.
B.Warm and easygoing.
C.Generous and modest.
D.Caring and responsible.
4.What would be the most suitable title for the text?
A.A Homeless Dog Found a Pet-friendly Home
B.A Homeless Dog Was Adopted by a Kind Man
C.A Homeless Dog Was Reunited with Her Family

A recent report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF)and the Zoological Society of London
(ZSL)shows that,on average, wildlife numbers have been on the large decrease since 1970.
The Living Planet Index (LPI)report is released every two years by WWF and ZSL.The
report tracks the best efforts of scientists to count wildlife populations around the world. The
word population here means groups of the same kinds of animals (species)living in the same
general area (or the size of those groups).
The report doesn't look at all wild animals, only vertebrates(脊椎动物)一animals with a
backbone.These include mammals,birds,fish,reptiles,and amphibians.The report studied
5,230 species found in 31,821 populations around the world, and about half of the populations
studied are dropping.
This year's LPI says that,on average,wildlife populations dropped by 69%in the 48
years from 1970 to 2018.That's a huge drop,and it's very worrying.Marco Lambertini,who
leads WWF,said,"The message is clear and the lights are flashing red.Our most comprehensive
report ever on the state of global vertebrate wildlife populations presents terrifying figures:a
shocking two-thirds decline in the global Living Planet Index less than 50 years."
The LPI isn't reporting numbers of animals. It's reporting the average change in the size
of animal populations over time.In fact, their losses are so extreme that the average drop for
all populations was 69%.
Central and South America and the Caribbean had the greatest population losses-a drop
of 94%.Next came Africa,with a 66%drop,followed by Asia and the Pacific with a 55%
drop.Europe and North America showed smaller losses.
Most of the losses are related to human actions. The biggest problem is the loss of wild
areas to growing cities, and activities like farming and deforestation.Hunting, overfishing,
and pollution are also big challenges.Climate change is a growing problem, and may soon be
the biggest one.
1.How many species suffered from loss in numbers according to the report?
A.About 2,615.B.About 5,230.C.About 15,910.
D.About 31,821.
2.What did Marco Lambertini try to express in Paragraph 4?
A.His great concern.
B.His deep disappointment.
C.His doubts about the report.
D.His expectations for the future.
3.What is the top factor leading to wildlife population losses?
A.Climate change.
B.People's activities.
C.Environmental pollution.
D.Hunting and overfishing.
4.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Wildlife Populations Change Over Time
B.Why Have Wildlife Populations Dropped

Do you know the rule of three? The rule of three simply means that people can remember
three pieces of information really well;add more items and retention falls off considerably. It's
one of the most powerful concepts in writing and communication.I've used the rule of three
very successfully with communicators in nearly every industry.1
Simply put,the human mind can consume only about three "chunks"of information in
short-term,or working, memory. As more and more items are added to a list, the average
person retains less and less.2 Five items are even harder.Once the number of items on a
list hits eight, most people have little chance of remembering the entire sequence.
Every July fourth,America celebrates the three rights voiced in the U.S.Declaration of
Independence:life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.Life, liberty, and happiness might
very well be the three most important words in American history. We all know Thomas
Jefferson is the primary author of the Declaration of Independence.3 Jefferson was a
skilled writer and his famous phrase reflects a rhetorical(technique that can be traced
to ancient Greece-a figure of speech using three words to express one idea.
4 In literature you'll find three little pigs, three musketeers, and three wishes
granted to an ambitious Aladdin.Painters are familiar with the three primary colors;they
know their three secondary colors, too. In science,Newton discovered three laws and
scientists discovered three elements that make up the atom.At the dinner table, you'll find
three pieces of cutlery:spoon, knife, fork. The flag of many countries have three colors.
5 Some of the world's most famous brands are ING,UPS,IBM,SAP,CNN,and
the BBC.
A.It works for me every time indeed.
B.Why do people love the rule of three?
C.There are three medals in the Olympics.
D.The rule of three exists everywhere in our lives.
E.Four items are a bit harder to remember than three.
F.Why did he choose three rights instead of four rights?
G.In writing and speaking, three is better than any other number.

Today when it comes to the use of digital technology, girls have less basic education,
leaving them far behind boys. And because the world is more digital, those who lack basic
Internet skills will find it more difficult to take part in the formal economy,to get a quality
education, and to have their voices heard.
Since2ol3 the global gender gap(性别差异)in male and female about the Internet has
actually increased from 11 to 12 percent.Worse yet, women and girls living in the poorest
countries are 31 percent less likely than men and boys to surf the Internet. In developing
countries, some 200 million fewer women than men own a mobile phone, the most common
means of surfing the Internet there. This digital divide is increasing, and if it continues at the
present pace,it is predicted that over 75 percent of women and girls will lack Internet access
and digital skills.
There are many causes of the digital gender gap. They include girls'exclusion (
from basic education, from specific technology education and high costs of mobile phones and
Internet access.
Indeed, one of the so-called reasons why girls may be discouraged from learning how to
access and use digital technology is also a groundless(毫无根据的)one:that girls are simply
not good at using technology.
Without the help of the government, most of the benefits of technological change will be
enjoyed only by men, making gender inequality even more serious.
1.What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A.Girls usually don't like to share their ideas.
B.Girls don't have enough digital knowledge.
C.Boys are more interested in making money.
D.Boys may always receive advanced education.
2.How does the writer make his statement in Paragraph 2?
A.By listing numbers.
B.By giving reasons.
C.By following the time order.
D.By giving examples.
3.What is the writer's attitude to the idea that girls are simply not good at using technology?
A.Positive.
B.Acceptable.
C.Negative.
D.Unclear.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Girls are lacking in education.
B.Women suffer a lot from poor economy.
C.Internet continues to develop fast and fast.
D.Girls are at a disadvantage compared with boys in digital technology.

At VOA Learning English,we sometimes get questions like this:"How can I speak
English with more confidence?"1 No matter what language we are learning,we would all
love to speak more confidently. So today,we have three pieces of advice to help you gain
confidence in your English-speaking ability.
Use positive self-talk
Believe it or not,the most important person you talk to every day is yourself. In other
words:2 So our first piece of advice is to use positive self-talk.
If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may tell yourself things like,3
When you talk to other people, you may say things like,"I'm so sorry for my English."But if
you keep thinking and saying such things, you are sure to start believing them.
So the next time you are using your English, pay attention to what you tell yourself or
others.Be sure to replace unhelpful thoughts or ideas with better ones.
Don't worry too much
One of the biggest barriers to confidence in speaking a second language is the constant
worry about making mistakes.
Understand that making mistakes is a natural part of the language learning process.Yes,
you will make mistakes.4 And many English learners communicate very well, even with
mistakes.Mistakes can be a good thing. The more mistakes you make, the more progress you
will make.
Set realistic goals
If your English-speaking skills are at the beginner or intermediate level and you try to do
something too difficult, you may fail.5 But,if you do something that matches your level,
you are more likely to do it well.
