Unit 1 Stay Healthy
Lesson 2: A Visit to the Dentist
I. Teaching Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Extract details from the diary (e.g., Wang Mei’s feelings, events at the dentist’s office) to complete True/False judgment (aligning with 中考 reading comprehension skills).
Master vocabulary related to illness and emotions (toothache, refuse, shake, fortunately, rotten) and synonyms (say no to = refuse, luckily = fortunately).
Analyze paragraph main ideas and retell the story using past tense (e.g., woke, had, went).
Share personal experiences of visiting a doctor, using target vocabulary and past tense (preparing for 中考 oral/writing tasks).
II. Key Points & Difficulties
Key Points
Vocabulary: Illness terms (toothache, rotten) and emotional expressions (refuse, shake, fortunately).
Grammar: Past tense narration (regular/irregular verbs: woke, had, fixed).
Skills: Paragraph matching, synonym replacement, and oral storytelling.
Difficulties
Distinguishing synonyms (e.g., fortunately vs. luckily, headset vs. headphones).
Naturally expressing fear and experiences in oral English with correct past tense.
III. Teaching Methods
Task-Based Learning (TBL): Through reading, vocabulary, and speaking tasks.
Reading Strategy Instruction: Teaching paragraph main idea analysis.
Communicative Approach: Focusing on real-life experience sharing.
IV. Teaching Aids
CAI (audio, vocabulary images, PPT).
Textbook and worksheet (for exercises).
V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up – Activate Background Knowledge (5 mins)
Discuss the THINK ABOUT IT questions:
(1)Have you ever had a toothache?
(2)How do you take care of your teeth?
Share: Invite 2–3 students to share stories, introducing toothache and linking to “visiting the dentist.”
Step 2: Pre-reading – Vocabulary & Prediction (8 mins)
Vocabulary Introduction:
Show images/definitions for toothache, refuse, shake (shook), fortunately, rotten, headset.
Example sentences: I refuse to eat candy. My hands shook when I was scared. Fortunately, the dentist helped me.
Prediction:
Show the diary title and first sentence: I’m really afraid of going to the dentist. Ask: Why is Wang Mei afraid? What will happen to her?
Step 3: Reading Comprehension – True/False Judgment (12 mins)
Silent Reading: Students read the diary and complete Let’s Do It! 1 (T/F):
(1)T (Para 1: I’m really afraid of going to the dentist.)
(2)F (Para 3: Imagine how scared I was! → Not interested, but scared.)
(3)F (Para 4: listened to music → Not watch TV.)
(4)T (Para 5: My aching tooth was fixed quickly.)
(5)F (Para 6: German saying → Not Russian.)
Analysis:
Discuss answers, underlining key sentences. Highlight past tense verbs (woke, had, told, went, was, gave, fixed).
Step 4: Paragraph Matching & Retelling (10 mins)
Paragraph Main Ideas:
Students read each paragraph and match with Let’s Do It! 2:
Para 1 → Wang Mei is really afraid of going to the dentist.
Para 2 → Wang Mei had a terrible toothache this morning.
Para 3 → Wang Mei was nervous at the dentist’s office.
Para 4 → Dr. Hu let Wang Mei listen to music to relax.
Para 5 → Dr. Hu fixed Wang Mei’s tooth quickly.
Para 6 → Wang Mei’s mum told her a saying.
Retell the Story:
In pairs, retell the story using the matched main ideas and past tense (e.g., Wang Mei had a toothache... She went to the dentist... Dr. Hu fixed her tooth...).
Step 5: Vocabulary Replacement – Synonyms (8 mins)
Complete Let’s Do It! 3:
(1)refuse (→ said no to)
(2)toothache (→ pain in her tooth)
(3)fortunately (→ luckily)
(4)headset (→ headphones)
(5)rotten (→ go bad)
Explanation:
Discuss subtle differences (e.g., fortunately is more formal; headset may include a microphone).
Step 6: Speaking Practice – Share Experiences (10 mins)
Task Introduction:
Use Let’s Do It! 4 prompts:
Do you still remember one of your visits to a doctor?
Are you afraid of going to see a doctor?
How do you overcome fear?
Role-Play:
In groups, share stories using past tense and target vocabulary (e.g., I had a fever... I was scared... Fortunately, the doctor helped me.).
Performance & Feedback:
Invite groups to present. Class feedback focuses on vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
Step 7: Summary & Homework (5 mins)
Summary:
Recap vocabulary (toothache, refuse, fortunately), past tense, and reading strategies (paragraph matching, synonyms).
Homework:
(1)Recite the diary’s key paragraphs (Para 1–5).
(2)Write a short story My Visit to the Doctor (8–10 lines), using 3 target words and past tense.
VI. Blackboard Design
