They destroy cities and create other disasters, such as fires, landslides and tsunamis. Climate change is causing increases in other natural disasters, like wildfires and hurricanes. So could it make earthquakes more common too? The biggest and most dangerous type of earthquake is the movements of the plates. Heat coming from deep within the planet causes these plates to move an average of 1.5 centimetres per year, making them rub up against each other. The pressure in those areas builds until it reaches a breaking point where the plates will move suddenly, releasing energy that causes earthquakes. Unlike other disasters, it's difficult to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations impossible. Unluckily, climate change could make quakes happen more often. With global warming, glaciers(冰川) are melting at an increased rate. "When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises,"said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada. It's the same principle as when a child pushes a pool noodle below the surface and then lets it go: The noodle stays down as long as there's pressure from above, but as soon as that pressure is released, it rises back up. When this happens, pressure differences can cause earthquakes. More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up. However, Cassidy is uncertain whether sea level rise would make these big quakes happen faster. He stressed that when they do happen, climate change will make them more dangerous. Tsunamis caused by earthquakes will reach farther inland. Warmer oceans will lead to increased rainfall, which will raise the danger of landslides. There's still a lot scientists have to learn. "It's an important topic that we'll see a lot of information coming out in the coming years,"Cassidy said."But no matter what we've discovered, it's not good news." ( )1.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. The danger of the heat. B. Why the plates move. C. The problem of the pressure. D. How the earthquake happens. ( )2. What does the underlined word "evacuations"in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Medical assistance systems. B. Emergency rescue operations. C. Reconstruction plans after disasters. D.
