As I was engaged in cutting lettuce in the kitchen, it suddenly occurred to me that I had seen a video on regrowing a whole new lettuce from its stub by placing it in water. Without hesitation, I took out a wide-mouthed mug, put the lettuce stub into it, added some water, and then set it near the window.
On a snowy morning, I spotted the first sign of life. A small leaf began to stretch out from its center, like a tiny green flag of hope — beaten, yet not defeated. Within just a few days, the cuts where I had removed the leaves were no longer visible; the growth was incredibly rapid. When I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, reaching for the soil. Lettuce or hope?
Put in the lettuce’s position I’d likely be doubtful initially, carefully sizing up my new environment before wholeheartedly diving into the process of growing. But this lettuce didn’t need much — just a bit of water and a place near the window is enough to decide it was going to thrive again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name .I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay (腐烂),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
24. Why did the author put the stub in water?
A. To hope that it would grow. B. To decorate the nice mug
C. To conduct an experiment. D. To remove his bad mood.
25. What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A. The remaining stub. B. The small leaf.
C. The disappearing cuts. D. The tiny root threads.
26. How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Confident. D. Annoyed.
27. Which can be a suitable title of the passage?
A. Enjoy your own life to the fullest. B. Believe in yourself when in trouble.
C. Never be afraid to restart yourself. D. Give freedom to the heart in a way.

In the face of increasing energy bills and the unstable situation of global temperatures, Deep Green, a small data center startup, and Exmouth Leisure Centre have come up with an approach to assist one another.
Since the start of the pandemic, energy costs for a leisure swimming pool have reportedly tripled, leaving many centers with no choice but to close, according to Swim England. They claim that by March 2024, 40 percent of council areas could risk losing their swimming pools if nothing changes.
Similarly, data centers have had to raise their fees in order to cover the extra cost of cooling their equipment, making it impossible to offer a competitive rate.
While most normal data centers waste the heat that the computers generate Deep Green has found a solution to benefit everybody. They have built a small data center in Exmouth Leisure Centre, allowing the heat from the servers to heat the swimming pool.
The solution is cost-free, and Exmouth Leisure Centre is projected to save about £20,000 per year. Given that data centers run 24 hours a day and are designed with backup power systems, they generate a consistent and reliable amount of heat."
“As the world moves, we need ten times the number of computers and we cannot build ten times the amount of data centers,” said Bjornsgaard, manager of Deep Green. “So there is a need to decentralize (分散) them and take little bits of them to where the heat is required. Our ‘digital boilers’ put waste heat to good use, saving local businesses thousands of pounds on energy bills and reducing their carbon footprint.”
Deep Green isn’t the only company to come up with a neat solution to using waste-heat. In Paris, the Condorcet data center is heating an onsite Climate Change Arboretum that studies which plants are most adaptable to global warming. Similarly, the Notre Dame Centre for Research Computing heats a local municipal greenhouse. So as Bjornsgaard says, this is just the start.
28. What problem is Exmouth Leisure Centre facing?
A. The increasing energy bill. B. The risk of losing its customers.
C. Finding ways to cool its equipment. D. Its decreasing swimming pools.
29. Why does Deep Green cooperate with Exmouth Leisure Centre?
A. Because they belong to the same company.
B. Because their business models are similar.
C. Because they can provide benefits for each other.
D. Because they both want to protect the environment.
30. What factor leads to plenty of heat in data centers?
A. The alarming speed of global warming.
B. The non-stop running pattern.
C. The building of backup power systems.
D. The poor arrangement of devices.
31. Which of the following can best describe the solution?
A. Modern but strange. B. Complicated but amazing.
C. Demanding and expensive. D. Creative and environment-friendly.
D
A scientist who discovered a unicorn (独角兽) might not say it without seeing it for many times. Yet, there are times when a single unicorn is all it takes.
In 2007 an astronomer named Duncan Lorimer reported finding a new kind of astronomical event. It was a brief stream of energy so powerful that it could reach Earth from a galaxy billions of light-years away. He called it a fast radio burst (FRB). This remarkable find, if real, could make huge contributions to the study about the universe. He predicted there would be many more — but that year, he spotted just one.
Though it’s not entirely unheard of for one event to launch an entirely new scientific inquiry, it is certainly uncommon. When Lorimer’s paper came out in the journal, it was not surprising that many were skeptical. “Sometimes, what seems like a remarkable scientific discovery turns out to be an error in the data,” some commented. As years ticked by and no more FRBs were discovered, some astronomers began to conclude Lorimer had found nothing more than an unusual example of one of the perytons.
Good news: in 2011, there was a report of a second FRB. Four more were found in 2013. Bad news: all of them came from the same Lorimer’s radio telescope. But ultimately, in 2014, there was a report from another radio telescope. More discoveries started showing up from other telescopes on a somewhat regular basis. At last the conversation about FRBs shifted — from whether they were real to where they came from.
Finally, this “unicorn” story came to a somehow surprising end. Several years ago, a team reanalyzed the same data from the radio telescope by which Lorimer found the first FRB. There was one more that they had previously missed. Since then, other teams have analyzed even older data and found FRBs in those datasets too. “They were just sitting there, waiting to be discovered by better techniques,” Lorimer says.
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in paragraph 3?
A. Negative. B. Curious. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
33. What is the purpose when unicorns are mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To indicate that the new scientific discovery might be a legend.
B. To hint that mythical creatures might actually exist in reality.
C. To symbolize the previously unknown and unseen discoveries.
D. To cite an event that occurred in the field of science.
34. Why was it bad news that other FRBs found also came from Lorimer’s telescope?
A. Because it might mean the results were not reliable.
B. Because they were all found at almost the same time.
C. Because these signals were labeled as perytons and turned out to be not real FRBs.
D. Because not every astronomer had access to the same type of telescope as Lorimer.
35. What does the last sentence imply?
A. Just one event might be enough to kick off a new scientific field.
B. It’s unlikely to make a new scientific discovery without advanced research methods.
C. Scientists shouldn’t deny new discoveries even if they lack evidence temporarily.
D. It’s important for scientists to carefully tell the difference between true discoveries and data errors.

A woman named Therese Ojibway often took her son to the wilderness to explore the nature.
One day, they had a usual walk in the woods. The sun shone brightly, and little Jaden held his mother’s hand tightly.
“Mommy, look at the trees! They’re so tall and green!” Jaden cried, pointing upwards with excitement. Ojibway smiled warmly, and her eyes were full of love. “Yes, my dear. This is your safe haven, where you can be yourself and explore all the wonders nature has to offer.”
As they walked deeper into the woods, Jaden’s curiosity grew. He stopped to play with the grass in a while and sometimes looked up into the sky carefully. Watching this, Ojibway felt a relief because only in the woods could Jaden behave freely and open his heart. When Jaden saw butterflies flying from flower to flower, his face lit up with joy. “Mommy, they are so beautiful! Can I catch one?” he asked innocently.
Ojibway looked at Jaden, saying, “Mommy also thinks they are very beautiful. Let’s just watch them dance, OK?” Jaden nodded thoughtfully, watching the butterflies quietly.
As they continued their walk, Jaden spotted something fluttering (拍打) weakly on the ground. It was a butterfly, whose wings were wet and stuck together, unable to fly. “Mommy, the butterfly is hurt! Can we help it?” Jaden asked worriedly.
Ojibway knelt down beside her son, gently picking up the delicate creature in her hands. “Of course, we can, honey. I think we should do something for it. Let’s find a safe place for it to rest and dry its wings.”
Together, they found a sheltered spot under a large tree, where Ojibway carefully placed the butterfly on a soft leaf. “Now, we just need to be patient and let nature do its work,” she said to Jaden. Jaden sat beside his mother, watching eagerly, with his little hand holding hers.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
As the minutes passed the butterfly slowly began to move.

M: I know! Why don’t you ride to work every day, and then take a nice long ride through the park on your way home?
W: Sounds good!

W: Yes, come in please. The washing machine is in the bathroom upstairs. It keeps breaking down.
M: When did it first break down?
W: About five days ago. I’ve tried to use it since then. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s very annoying.
M: If I can’t fix it, it would be quicker and easier to change it for a new one.
W: I see. Over the last few weeks, it’s also been making an awful noise when it’s in use.
M: OK. I’ll start by looking at the motor. Oh, yes. There is the problem. I’ll sort it out in a few minutes.
W: What’s wrong with it?
M: Part of the motor is loose. I can put it back in place quite easily. Look! It’s OK now.
W: Thanks a lot. Would you like a cup of tea or coffee?
M: No, thanks. But I’m afraid you have to pay $15 for it.
W: That’s OK.

M: Well, the new sea life center at Plymouth is an extremely exciting place. There are so many things to see and everything is enjoyable as well as educational. Special attractions for children include a quiz and hourly feeding times for all the different animals and fish, starting at 9:30. You can see everything here, from the most enormous sea creatures to the smallest. Every morning from ten o’clock there are slide and video shows for children in the sea life theatre, and someone is always there to answer questions about what you’ve seen. If you are in a group of six or more people, they can give you a special guided tour of the center. But you need to arrange this at the information desk when you arrive. The latest attraction at the center is a big glass tunnel you can walk through. All around you, you will see enormous fish swimming. Sometimes even over your head. You certainly have the clearest possible view of the world beneath the waves. Children love it and it’s really amazing for adults too. When you get hungry, there is a relaxed family dining area serving snacks, cold drinks and ice creams. Near the main entrance there is an excellent bookshop and there’s also a souvenir shop selling all kinds of things connected with the sea. So I warmly recommend this visit.

Put in the lettuce’s position, I’d likely be doubtful initially, carefully sizing up my new environment before wholeheartedly diving into the process of growing.
A 25. B 26. A 27. C

While most normal data centers waste the heat that the computers generate, Deep Green has found a solution to benefit everybody.
B The non-stop running pattern.
C. The building of backup power systems.
D. The poor arrangement of devices.
31. Which of the following can best describe the solution?
A. Modern but strange. B. Complicated but amazing.
C. Demanding and expensive. D. Creative and environment-friendly.
A 29. C 30. B 31.

B Because they were all found at almost the same time.
D 33. C 34. A 35. C
根据第三段中“When Lorimer’s paper came out in the journal, it was not surprising that many were skeptical. “Sometimes, what seems like a remarkable scientific discovery turns out to be an error in the data,” some commented.(当洛里默的论文在期刊上发表时,许多人skeptical,这并不奇怪。“有时候,看似非凡的科学发现,结果却是数据错误,”一些人评论道。)”可知,许多人对洛里默的论文持怀疑态度,认为有时候看似非凡的科学发现结果是数据上的错误,skeptical“怀疑的”与D选项Doubtful“怀疑的”意思一致。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“A scientist who discovered a unicorn (独角兽) might not say it without seeing it for many times. Yet, there are times when a single unicorn is all it takes.(一个发现独角兽的科学家可能不会在没多次见到它的情况下就这么说。然而,有时候,一只独角兽就足够了。)”和第二段“In 2007 an astronomer named Duncan Lorimer reported finding a new kind of astronomical event. It was a brief stream of energy so powerful that it could reach Earth from a galaxy billions of light-years away. He called it a fast radio burst (FRB). This remarkable find, if real, could make huge contributions to the study about universe. He predicted there would be many more — but that year, he spotted just one.(2007年,一位名叫邓肯·洛里默的天文学家报告称发现了一种新型天文事件。
根据第四段中“Bad news: all of them came from the same Lorimer’s radio telescope. But ultimately, in 2014, there was a report from another radio telescope. More discoveries started showing up from other telescopes on a somewhat regular basis. At last the conversation about FRBs shifted — from whether they were real to where they came from.(但坏消息是:这些发现全部来自洛里默使用的那台射电望远镜。不过最终,在2014年,另一台射电望远镜也报告了快速射电暴的发现。此后,其他望远镜也开始较为定期地发现更多此类事件。最终,关于快速射电暴的讨论焦点从“它们是否真实存在”转移到了“它们源自何处”。)”可知,其他快速射电暴信号也都来自洛里默的同一台射电望远镜,这可能意味着结果不可靠,所以是坏消息。故选A。
根据最后一段中““They were just sitting there, waiting to be discovered by better techniques,” Lorimer says.(“它们一直就在那里,等待着更先进的技术将它们发现。”

De la Gran Muralla a Machu Picchu (From the Great Wall to Machu Picchu)和produce之间是逻辑动宾关系,所以用过去分词表被动,作后置定语。
故填that/which。
根据“Since Nov. 17”可知,本句应用现在完成时,主语the film和air之间是逻辑动宾关系,应用被动语态,且主语the film为单数,因此空格处是has been aired。故填has been aired。

Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua, a Senior One student in our school. I’m writing to invite you to give us a guiding lecture.
During our English listening and speaking training, we’ve encountered some frustrating problems. In listening, the speakers speak so rapidly that we can hardly keep up, and we often get confused about the context. As for speaking, we lack the confidence to express ourselves accurately. We struggle to organize our thoughts quickly and end up stuttering or using simple and repetitive expressions.
Could you please let me know if you are willing to help us? Your positive reply will be highly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
As the minutes passed, the butterfly slowly began to move.

“Yes, we did it!” Ojibway smiled, turning to her son
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
As the minutes passed, the butterfly slowly began to move. Its wings, once stuck together, gradually separated under the warmth of the sun. Jaden watched with bated breath, his hand tightly holding his mother’s. “It’s working, Mommy,” he said softly, eyes shining with hope. Ojibway nodded, whispering encouragement to both her son and the little creature. Soon enough, the butterfly gave a few tentative flutters before taking off gently from the leaf.
“Yes, we did it!” Ojibway smiled, turning to her son. Jaden beamed back, filled with pride and joy. “We helped it fly again, Mommy!” He exclaimed, clapping his hands. Ojibway hugged him close, feeling his excitement. “You see, honey, sometimes all someone needs is a little help to get back on their feet.” As they walked home through the woods, Jaden kept looking up at the sky, hoping to catch another glimpse of the butterfly. The day was not just about rescuing an insect; it was a lesson in kindness and patience that would stay with him for years to come.
