[广东中山一中2025高一段考]Tom Fear was driving home on Hutchinson River Parkway last week when he saw a large bag in the roadway. As he got closer, he realized it was not a bag but a bald eagle. He stopped his car at the roadside, and carefully walked to pick up the bird with his hands.“It didn’t resist (反抗) at all. I had my arms crossed. Its head was more or less lying on my arm. It was not in great shape.”
Two women pulled over after seeing the 52-year-old with the bird and called the police, who contacted animal control expert Jim Horton from QualityPro Pest & Wildlife Services. Horton said it was the second time in the last few months that his company had been contacted to help an eagle in trouble. He said what Fear did for the bird is great, calling it “a once-in-a-lifetime thing”.
Missy Runyan, from the Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center, an organization in Hunter, said the bird was first thought to be hit by a car but there was no bruising.

It was, however, suffering from lead poisoning (铅中毒), which influenced its eyesight.“It’s likely that it hit a tree or something with its wing, leaving it unable to fly,” said Runyan, who’s been taking care of injured eagles for the past 15 years.
Runyan said a wildlife officer was actually looking for the eagle after someone had called earlier in the day but it could not be found. She realized it was the same bird after the other call came in about it. Runyan, who is treating seven eagles now, said the infection (感染) in the eagle’s wing is being treated and it should be ready to fly away in about a month and a half.

B
解析 设空处前“But it seems that we may have taken these things for granted and not realised that our planet is getting ‘sick’.”提到“我们”没有意识到地球正在“生病”,设空处后“More than 15,000 researchers around the world have written a letter to warn about environmental threats.”
2.___
A
解析 根据设空处前“Global average temperatures have risen by more than 0.5<m></m> since 1992.”

More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade if action isn’t taken soon.

[全国甲2024]Animals can express their needs using a lot of ways. For instance, almost all animals have distinct vocals (声音) that they rely on to either ask for help, scare away any dangerous animals or look for shelter. But cats are special creatures who possess amazing vocalization skills. They are able to have entire conversations with humans using meows and you’re able to interpret it. If a pet cat is hungry, it will keep meowing to attract attention and find food. However, when a cat is looking for affection, they tend to produce stretched and soft meows. Meowing starts as soon as a baby cat is brought to life and uses it to get the mother’s attention and be fed.
Cats have many heightened senses, but their sense of smell is quite impressive. They use their noses to assess their environment and look out for any signs of danger. They will sniff out specific areas before they choose a place to relax. However, another way the cats are able to distinguish between situations is by looking for familiar smells. [天津四校2024高一期末联考]Butterflies, a familiar sight around the world, are disappearing now. Over the past four decades, more than 450 butterfly species have been affected by threats from climate change. In the US alone, the monarch butterfly has seen a drop of 80%, from millions of them recorded by scientists in the 1980s to only 29,000 in 2020; in 2017 scientists in Germany raised alarm bells after stressing that insects had decreased by more than 70% in 30 years.
Leading environmental organisations have been working hard to find new ways of tracking butterflies. Now, there is no long-term data available to develop effective strategies in those areas where the threat is particularly widespread. The scientists also wanted to address the big problem that long-term monitoring programmes worldwide have faced for a long time: They are focused on training locals as citizen biologists, which, although successful, requires significant and continued funding.

In Ecuador, however, scientists have taken things one step further. The study was undertaken (开展) to fight against the serious threat of dying out that so many insects—not just butterflies—are facing. They came up with a unique approach. In Yasuni National Park, one of the world’s most diverse reserves, they started a monitoring project where park rangers (护林员) were trained and then performed monitoring. The rangers were able to identify sampled butterflies to species with impressive accuracy (准确性)—an 85% success rate—which was key for these monitoring programmes to be successful. The data gathered by the park rangers was so accurate that it did not significantly differ from the data collected by trained biologists in the area.
In comparison to other monitoring projects that employ individuals from the community to act as citizen biologists, which usually terminate when funding is used up, this study represents a long-term solution. Monitoring with a system already in place means that it can continue, regardless of funding.

Most people think pre-kindergarten, or pre-K education can be life-changing for children, particularly for those from poor families. But more research doesn’t go with it.
An analysis of 22 experiments between 1960 and 2016 showed that children who attended preschool were less likely to need special education services or repeat years and graduated from high school at higher rates. But the improvements were small.
One study of pre-K programmes in Boston published in 2021 found that attending preschool did increase high-school graduation and college attendance, but did not affect test scores in one’s teenage years.
The new research makes the situation even more complex. Researchers at Vanderbilt University followed nearly 3,000 Tennessee children from poor families, some of whom were randomly (随机地) assigned to a free pre-K programme. Like previous studies, they found that attending preschool made children better-prepared for kindergarten. But the benefits ended there. In their teenage years, they actually performed worse on tests and behaviour.

Between third and sixth grade, the children who attended preschool did worse on tests, with lower school attendance and more rule-breaking incidents. The biggest differences were in sixth grade, where their scores in reading and maths were between 1% and 4% lower than those of children who didn’t take part in the programmes.
So, measuring the impact of pre-K is difficult. Many of the effects don’t appear until later in life. And with time passing by, the effect of individual programmes is becoming harder to tell.
As the researchers say, parenting has changed a lot since the 1960s: Parents are more hands-on, and home education resources have vastly improved. What’s more, the quality of preschool teaching might go down as the number of pre-K classes increases rapidly. Teacher-student ratios (比例) in Tennessee are twice as high as before, but America has the third-lowest spending on early-childhood education among 36 mostly rich OECD countries.

I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?

As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say good-bye.”

A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider-webs.I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found.Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how she was getting on now.Had she managed to find her way back home, or was she still out there somewhere struggling to survive?
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.A flash of movement caught my attention.I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air.It seemed that the bird was waiting for me.Its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude.I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I got into my car and drove away.
