[湖北武汉中学2025高一月考]The first time I realised that I had a love for sports competitions was during the sports day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various sports teams. The sports day, which focused on individual (个体的) skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of the Committee of Games. I also played in the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things I did.

During break time, magazines were also quite popular with us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when I had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, which is considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

[安徽芜湖一中2024高一期中]It’s OK to run when it’s cold outside. But is it OK to run when you have a cold? Many runners find the activity addictive. Running releases endorphins (内啡肽) into the brain, which are responsible for mood changes. The harder you run, the more endorphins released, and the happier you are. Some studies show this endorphin rush allows people to continue running even when injured or sick.
And that brings us to the point of this article—why people continue their running even when they’re sick. Most of us curl up in bed with some chicken soup and the remote control when we’re under the weather. But runners often hit the road. Are they helping or hurting themselves by jogging with a cold?
The best way to decide whether you should exercise is to employ what doctors call the “neck check”.Feel free to go running if your cold is “above the neck”.Doctors advise against proceeding with your exercise if your symptoms (症状) are “below the neck”.

Some people think that running in cold temperatures will actually make them sick. But this isn’t really true. You can’t freeze your lungs or windpipe (气管).Your body heats the air you breathe. When the air is particularly cold, you may feel a burning sensation in your chest as you breathe. If that’s the case, try covering your mouth with a scarf or wearing a ski mask. That’ll help heat up the air before you breathe it in.
Keep in mind, if you have an infection (感染) in your chest or throat, running outside can indeed make things worse. But if you have a simple head cold, it would be fine to take that run, even if it’s cold outside.

[湖南长沙长郡中学2024高一期末]A large percentage of Kenyan top runners are members of the Kalenjin, one ethnic group of the country. They make up around eleven percent of Kenya’s population. This fact has puzzled sports scientists. They have spent considerable time and effort trying to answer one question: What enables the Kalenjin people to run so fast?
A team of Danish scientists spent 18 months and discovered the Kalenjins had remarkably slow heart rates even when running long distances. The Kalenjins live in high-elevation (高海拔) villages in Western Kenya. People living there produce more red blood cells, which support the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Scientists believe there is a connection between increased red blood cells and low heart rates and that both may enable high-altitude athletes to outperform those who train at a low elevation. The Danish scientists also studied the bodies of the Kalenjins and compared them to those of the Danes. They found that the Kalenjins have lower body mass index (BMI)—a measure of body fat based on weight and height, and longer “birdlike” legs than Danish people.

As a result of the Danish studies, some scientists made the conclusion that the Kalenjins possessed what was called a “speed gene”.However, Kenyan runners were offended by this conclusion. They owed their success to hard work and endless hours of training.
Although the controversy (争议) over the “speed gene” remains unsolved, British runner Mo Farah’s experience offers an interesting perspective on the subject. In 2005, he realized he wasn’t meeting his potential as a runner, so he moved in with a group of Kenyan runners who were training in England then. After he observed the Kenyans’ strict training routines and dedication to their sports, Farah began eating healthy foods and training harder than he had ever trained in his life. As a result, Farah’s running career exploded. He has won seven world and Olympic titles in the 5,000 m and regularly beats Kenya’s top runners.

[江苏盐城五校2024高一期末]Sports play a key role in the physical and mental development of children. Although it’s great to see a child succeed in one sport, it’s important to keep their activities in balance. Participation in multiple sports enables children to acquire a knowledge of many movement skills. In addition to this, here are some very good reasons why kids should be encouraged to play multiple sports.
Repetitive movements can overstress growing bodies, which later on can lead to injuries. With multiple sports, each sport has a slightly different effect on the body. This will lead to fewer overuse injuries. Also, kids who overspecialise in one sport may end up losing interest and eventually quit. Specialising in a sport raises expectations and may put too much pressure on young kids. Having a variety of experiences will keep children interested and motivated, and even make them enjoy sports without any pressure.

Martial arts develop strength, mobility, and discipline. Swimming develops full body coordination and strength. The list goes on and on! Participation in multiple sports broadens a child’s developmental, social, and situational experience. It opens up opportunities to become a better competitor and a promising athlete—flexible and energetic.
Besides developing a wide range of sports skills, more importantly, multiple sports provide opportunities for children to discover their liking. With the help of the right coaches, sports become fun, arousing kids’ interest. So if you can’t decide whether your child should focus on one sport or try some different sports, I hope you can make a better decision now.

[黑龙江哈尔滨九中2025高一月考]Adults who continuously played organised sports through their youth have fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression than those who never played or those who dropped out, a new study finds.“And those who dropped out of sports had poorer mental health than those who never played at all. But many more people drop out of youth sports than play continuously until they are 18,” said Chris Knoester, a professor of sociology at The Ohio State University.
“If you play and stick with sports, it’s positive for your mental health, but if you play and drop out, it seems to be negative—and most kids drop out,” Knoester said. The study showed that most people dropped out of sports because they weren’t having fun or felt they weren’t good enough.“That suggests ways youth sports can be improved to help kids,” said study lead author Laura Upenieks.

“Our findings about why kids drop out of organised sports suggest that the current environment is less than ideal for everyone, and that the barriers to participation need to be given greater attention,” Upenieks said.
“It is easy to see why sports can be good for those who are able to continue with them to adulthood,” Upenieks said.“The longer the youth are exposed to a positive and encouraging sporting environment, the more likely they are to develop habits that are beneficial to long-term mental well-being, such as commitment to regular exercise and collaborating with others as part of a team.”
The fact that so many kids quit shows that organised sports often don’t provide a positive environment. But there are steps adults can take to improve that environment.

“We need to improve youth sports so that they support positive experiences for everyone and make participation more enjoyable,” he said.

[广东深圳高级中学2025高一期中]Research on the effects of age on language learning often leads to the conclusion that it’s impossible to learn a language after the age of 18, yet there’s no scientific proof for this. While certain language processing abilities work best during childhood, others may even experience a new growth between 50 and 75.
The definition of language learning and its goals also play an important role. If the aim is to talk easily in daily social situations, research suggests that fluency in a new language can be achieved at any age with enough study.
Learning a language at different stages of life comes with advantages and disadvantages. If you start before 10, you may be able to get a native-like accent. But if you start teaching a second language to a child late in their speaking development, there may be challenges.
Between 10 and 18, there is a special chance to understand grammar and develop an understanding of a new language’s rules. Language learning during this period can also make you more confident and encourage a positive attitude towards language changes.

When you study another language in adulthood, you may do more translation and think in your native language first. You may also feel nervous and be slow to speak. But adults have advantages too. They have great communication skills, know more about literature, and understand society and culture better.
Learning a new language at the age of 50 and above may be easier because some of the mental skills keep getting better until people are in their mid-to-late 70s. This age group can quickly learn the basics of a language, although more research is needed to prove this.
刷阅读理解
In summary, while some aspects may become harder with age, there is no age limit that makes language learning futile.Even if you make some mistakes, reaching an intermediate level in a language can be rewarding. Starting early can improve your pronunciation and grammar. But using the language all your life is very important if you want to speak it well. Ultimately, it’s never too late to start or relearn a language.

[辽宁丹东2025高一期末]阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eric was a boy who barely reached five feet in height. He was really, really small, but his friend Jonas was the tallest child in the whole school.
Feeling upset, Eric complained to Dad that he was often ignored in PE classes.“It’s not fair,” said Eric.“Jonas always gets picked first in PE, but nobody picks me. I wish I were tall.”
“Jonas won’t grow forever,” said Dad, patting Eric on the shoulder gently.“At some point, Jonas will slow down and everyone else will catch up. And that includes you, Eric. You just have to be patient and live in the present.”
At school the next day, they had a new PE teacher, Mr Groves. Mr Groves divided them into teams to play basketball. First, everyone had a go at dribbling the ball (运球) by weaving it in and out of cones. Eric found it easier than he had expected and he was just the right size to twist and turn. Next, they tried shooting the ball through a hoop.

The hoop looked so far away to Eric as if it were on the moon. Whenever the small figure tried to shoot, whispers and laughter spread through the court.
However, with Dad’s words echoing in his mind, Eric chose to be patient. He dreamt of one day standing on the court, sweat dripping, heart pounding, in a basketball game. Every day after school, Eric would make a beeline for the school’s basketball court and spend hours sharpening his skills.
Months later, when the news broke that his school was to compete in an inter-school basketball game, Eric’s eyes lit up with excitement. Mr Groves told them there would be a basketball team trial (选拔赛) first. Eric made up his mind to give it a try. On the day of the trial, kids of all sizes and shapes came to the gym to show their skills, most of them over six feet tall, like young giants.
