Riya spent the first week of high school trying to keep her head above water. She found it hard to make new friends and get used to new teachers. She felt the huge buildings were too huge. She decided that she would just remember where her classes were and then try to put the rest of the places out of her mind. All of these changed after a P.E. class.
One day in P.E. class, the coach said that everyone had to run one mile around the track (跑道). Riya searched the faces of her classmates for signs of worry. There was nothing she was afraid of more than having to run a whole mile.
When the coach blew his whistle (吹口哨), Riya thought most of her classmates would pass her. “It’s just the beginning.” she thought, “I’ll come in last for sure. But what should I do? I cannot just stop here”.
Riya started using a mind trick (技巧) on herself. She stopped thinking about the word “mile”. Instead, she decided to first reach the big tree up ahead. Then she ran to the place where the track turned. After that, she tried to see if she could finish her first lap (跑道的一圈). One lap turned into two, then three, then four. When the coach gave her a high five and said “Nice work”, Riya was surprised. She could not believe that she had just run a whole mile.
As Riya walked back to the school building after P.E., she noticed that she felt less worried about its size. Maybe she would come to know the buildings one after another. All her other worries about new school life seemed to disappear as well because she knew that she would solve problems one lap at a time just like the one-mile run.

A. Relaxing. B. Difficult. C. Fantastic. D. Boring.
25. What did Riya have to do in her P.E. class?

People and animals often have special relationships. Sometimes, people and animals cooperate—they work together for the same goal. Scientists call these relationships mutualisms. It means they are good for both people and animals.
Mauricio Cantor is a behavioral ecologist (行为生态学家) at Oregon State University. He studies animal behavior and how their behavior is affected by where they live.
In Brazil, local fishers team up with bottlenose dolphins (宽吻海豚). This team-up started more than a hundred years ago. The dolphins and fishers catch the same food: mullet fish (胭脂鱼). “The dolphins are really good at finding fish,” Cantor said. They drive fish toward the coast. Then, the fishers catch the fish in their net (渔网). Once those fish are in the net, dolphins can move in. They catch some fish for themselves.
Cantor’s team studied this partnership (合作关系). They learned that dolphins and fishers depend on the information from each other. They each have to know the right moves. If they don’t, the partnership goes to pieces. Cantor’s team also found that this practice is becoming less and less.
Here is another example of human-animal working together. People in North America teamed up with gray wolves (灰狼). Together, they hunted big animals. These included elk and mammoths (麋鹿和猛犸象). For example, the wolves would run after an elk until it got tired. Once the humans caught up, they would make the kill. There were a large number of mammoths and elk at that time, so it was fine that humans and wolves went after the same thing. There was a great amount of meat to go around. But this special partnership can no longer be seen. However, after running after the animals, some people still leave a bit of meat for the wolves.
“Human-animal partnerships have not been common throughout history, but they show us how humans try their best to team up with the nature.” Cantor said.
27. Why do bottlenose dolphins help push fish toward the coast?
A. Because they can kill the fish.
B. Because the fish can run away.
C. Because fishers can catch the dolphins.
D. Because they can also catch some fish in nets.
28. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?
A. How wolves helped people hunt big animals.
B. How wolves killed the mammoths.
C. How much meat wolves got.
D. How fast mammoths ran.
29. What’s the writer’s real purpose in the last paragraph?
A. To introduce how to cooperate with animals.
B. To tell us that humans like to cooperate with animals.
C To question the partnerships between man and nature.
D. To explain the reasons why human-animal partnerships are popular.
【答案】27. D 28. A 29. B

Playing is a key part of the learning process for almost all of the children. There are different ways in which children play, but one of the most important is role-playing. This involves a child taking part in an activity during which he or she pretends(装扮) to be another person.
Experts on child development believe that role-playing can increase the connections in children’s brains that help them learn. Language skills are some of the most important aspects of learning. When children role-play, they must work out steps that need to be taken to complete a task, and create plans to act out a story. These activities enable children to develop their spoken language skills. They become able to organize others and to give directions.
Children’s social skills can also be developed. Children have different roles in group activities. Some are leaders while others are followers. At times, the children will disagree, so they must learn to compromise with one another. That is to say, they need to accept something slightly different from what they really want so that both sides are happy at the end. Children further learn about cooperation and sharing and, hopefully, begin to understand things from another person’s point of view.
Besides helping children learn some kinds of skills, role-playing develops children’s imaginations and can therefore assume (呈现) a number of forms. For example, boys may pretend to shave like their fathers or perform several different tasks around their homes. Girls, meanwhile, often pretend to be mothers to do some daily tasks, particularly if it involves caring for young babies. Sometimes children may imagine belonging to a group of superheroes or copy real-life situations. They might dress up and assume different roles. Another example is the performing of stories they read in books, which is also very common when they role-play.
Another beneficial aspect of role-playing is that it can help children deal with certain actions that may cause them emotional pain, such as the fear they face when going to school for the first time or making a visit to the doctor. If children role-play situations like these beforehand, the fear that they experience when doing these actions in reality frequently becomes less. For this reason, experts encourage parents to allow their children to role-play and even to take part in these activities to help their children manage to control their fears.
Role-playing can benefit children in many ways. There is no activity for which young children are better prepared than imaginable play. Nothing is more dependable and risk-free, and the dangers are only pretended.

A. receive benefits from their emotional pain

Do you have exam stress (压力)? Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term in your classes and now it’s the time to prove what you have learned. In fact, it’s common for most of us to have exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing. If we have proper (适当的) stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can help us to focus (聚焦) on the preparation of exams. However, if we can’t deal with stress well, we may make things worse.
When I was in school, I used to get very stressed over my exams. So did my friends. Some of them stopped eating and others ate too much! Some gave up and others burned themselves out! But the most important thing to remember when studying is not to feel frightened! Take the middle path (路线)— stay calm, eat healthy and get a rest. Pushing yourself too hard is just as dangerous as not studying enough. A tired, overworked brain is just as useless as a lazy, empty one!
So, what should you do? Set a time each day for study and a time for relaxation. You may have less time to relax than usual, but you still need to let your brain rest for a few moments. Get plenty of sleep. If you are tired, information will not stick in your memory. Finally, cat healthy foods that fuel (提供能量) your body and mind.
It does no good to think too much about your exams. Some students may think that the rest of their life depends on exams. That’s not true. Instead, just see the exams as another difficulty you will overcome (克服). You have overcome all kinds of difficulties in your life so far. With the right amount of work and focus, you will pass your exams with flying colors!

【答案】例文
Diligence is a must for us to reach our goals. It was quite a big challenge for me because I was not confident about my oral English and I was shy to speak in public. So it was a little difficult for me.
To give a better performance, I made full use of my spare time to prepare for it. I recorded my lines and asked my foreign teacher to correct my pronunciation. Then I kept practising day and night. Besides, I seized every chance to speak in front of my family or friends. The more I practised, the more confident I became. In the end, I won the competition and got a prize.
It was so great that all my efforts paid off. I felt so proud of myself.

24. How was the first week of high school for Riya?
A. Relaxing. B. Difficult. C. Fantastic. D. Boring.
25. What did Riya have to do in her P.E. class?
A. Learn to blow a whistle. B. Search for her classmates.
C. Run a mile around the track. D. Count the trees around buildings.
26. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. Riya decided to first reach where the track turned. B. The coach taught Riya a mind trick before the run.
C. Riya couldn’t stop thinking about the word “mile”. D. A mind trick helped Riya run a whole mile successfully.
C. To question the partnerships between man and nature.
D. To explain the reasons why human-animal partnerships are popular.
30. According to the passage, children ________ when role-playing.
A. receive benefits from their emotional pain
B. follow teacher’s steps and plan to finish a task
C. prefer performing superheroes to their parents
D. act out what happens in daily life or book stories

Do you have exam stress (压力)? Exam time is the most stressful time of the year. You have worked all school term in your classes and now it’s the time to prove what you have learned. In fact, it’s common for most of us to have exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing. If we have proper (适当) stress, we can think actively and work harder.
34. When is the most stressful time of the year for the students?
________________________________________________
35. What is the most important thing to remember when studying?

36. Why should we get plenty of sleep during exam time?

37. What do you think of exam stress? What should students do to deal with exam stress? (Give at least two points.)
