Hi Zhou Ling,
How are you? Do you still go to the gym every day? I used to go to the gym three times a week, but I don't work out any more. I know another way to stay slim.Looking good is important to women, isn't it? Most young women want a slim figure these days, especially here in Canada. I'm trying to lose weight because I'm so ashamed of my body. Since I'm preparing to act in a new TV show, I'm taking weight-loss pills called Fat-Less,which are quite popular among young women here. I hope to lose at least 10 kilograms. I take two pills a day and don't need to exercise.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Amy
Writing:
1.Please give Amy some advice.
I'm sorry to hear you take weight-loss pills. We shouldn't be embarrassed about our weight. I think you look great as you are, and you're a wonderful person. I know that the pressure to stay slim is a problem. However, nothing is more important than health.
2.What's your opinion about losing weight?
I think one healthy way of losing weight is to keep a balanced diet. That is to say, we should not have too much fat or snacks, but more vegetables and fruits. To do exercise or play some sports is also an effective way to lose weight — walking and riding a bicycle are the easiest and cheapest ways to exercise.

On James Owen's 70th birthday, he saw a video of himself walking with difficulty up to the stage where he was giving a talk.“I looked like an old man,” says Owen, who built a successful career on Wall Street.
He was about 25 pounds overweight and had chronic (慢性的) trouble with his back, knees, and shoulders. But instead of giving in to age, Owen decided to set an ambitious five-year goal: He wanted to be pain-free, and he decided the way to get there was through exercise — even though at the time he couldn't do a single push-up.
Owen began his new exercise regimen (养生计划) by walking, though he became out of breath after five minutes. But that didn't discourage him.He kept at the walks every day, along with some stretching.Once he had those basics done, he started weightlifting and hired a personal trainer to teach him and to design a routine he could follow on his own.The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming.
In less than five years, Owen was able to do three sets of 50 push-ups each and walk for miles each day.And yes, he was free of aches and pains.
Owen used his experience to write a book called Just Move! A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which he details how older adults can safely get off the couch and add more movement to their lives. The key: getting started, even if you walk just three blocks, which was all he could manage at first.“Think of it as movement, not exercise,” he says.“The key is slow and steady progress.”
Now 81 and retired, Owen exercises an hour a day, six days a week.“It is the best investment I've ever made in my life,” he says.

Posting selfies (自拍) online can be a fun way to share your life with your friends and family. But some people take their photos a bit too seriously and spend a lot of time editing them. This not only presents a “fake” image (形象) of those people to the world, but can even make people feel worse about themselves.
Researchers in Australia did a study in which 130 women aged 18 to 30 were asked to look at a series of photos. Some of the photos showed thin women, while others showed average-sized women. Afterwards, the women were asked to take a selfie with a phone and were then given 10 minutes to edit the selfie.
The women were also asked about their personal dissatisfaction with their bodies and faces several times during the experiment — before and after viewing their images, and after editing their selfies.
The researchers' findings showed that the longer the women took to edit and post their selfies, the more likely they were to have negative feelings about their own appearance. In addition, the more heavily edited the photos were, the more likely it was that the women were dissatisfied with their facial appearance.
People are often pressured to present the best version (版本) of themselves. This in turn creates greater stress as they edit their photos to “perfection”, while they themselves don't actually change, according to Professor Marika Tiggemann, one of the researchers. The findings show the difficulties people face when using social media.
8.Why do some people spend plenty of time editing their photos?
A.They want to show people their fake image.
B.They want to make people feel worse about them.
C.They want to kill time.
D.They take their photos too seriously.

9.Which things were the women asked to do in the study?
①To look at given photos
②To make their selfies
③To comment on given photos
④To express their attitudes
⑤To edit their selfies
A.①②③④ B.①②④⑤
C.①②③⑤ D.②③④⑤
10.Which one of the following is NOT the research's findings?
A.The longer one edits his selfies, the more likely he feels negative with his appearance.
B.The more heavily edited one's selfies are,the more likely he is dissatisfied with his face.
C.When people post online their best selfies, their stress may decrease.
D.Posting over-edited selfies online can make people feel worse about themselves.
根据最后一段中的“This in turn creates greater stress as they edit their photos to ‘perfection’”可推断出,当人们在网上发布他们最好的自拍时,他们的压力会增加,而不是减少。
11.What do Professor Marika Tiggemann's words mean in the last paragraph?
A.One's stress with over-edited selfies actually results from pressure.
B.One's stress with over-edited selfies is related to his appearance change.
C.One's stress can lead to his photos' perfection.
D.One can present his best version of himself under no pressure.
D
Parents take note! You might want to cut down on your kid's screen time. According to a new study, children who spend a lot of time in front of the screens are at a higher risk of gaining weight and abdominal (腹部的) obesity, regardless of how much they exercise. The increase in childhood obesity is one of the largest health problems globally.
The study, carried out at the Folkhälsan Research Centre, focused on links between screen time and being overweight by studying the Finnish Health in Teens data of more than 10,000 children from across Finland. The studied children were between 9 and 12 years of age.
The subjects reported the time spent watching television programs and films on screens and on the long-time computer use outside school hours. The children were measured for height and weight.
The results of the study showed that heavy screen time takes up children's much free time and is related to both overweight and abdominal obesity, and even influences their performance at school. But there was no difference in the findings by age, gender, native languages, sleep time and exercise during free time. Watching a lot of television was also related to overweight and obesity in children who exercised the most.
“It must be noted that this study does not show anything about direct cause and effect. It may be that overweight children spend more time in front of screens, or that heavy screen time may result in overweight,” said researcher Elina Engberg from the University of Helsinki.
“Neither did the study measure the intensity of exercise. The children were only asked about the amount of time they spent exercising in their free time. Further research on the combined effect of the screen time, the physical activity and the diet on children's weight is needed,” Elina Engberg added.
12.What can we infer from the results of the study?
A.The less sleep time kids get, the fatter they become.
B.Exercise has nothing to do with overweight.
C.Kids' watching too much TV leads to less exercise.
D.Heavy screen time makes kids absent from school.
13.What will Elina focus on in the future?
A.Ways of kids' exercise.
B.The importance of physical activities.
C.How to advise kids to spend their free time.
D.Whether other things affect kids' overweight.
14.The passage is intended for .
A.parents B.children
C.schools D.researchers
You might want to cut down on your kid's screen time.”
15.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Healthy diets help kids avoid overweight.
B.How to deal with kids' overweight.
C.Parents should keep their kids off TV.
D.Heavy screen time may lead to kids' overweight.

Is Dieting OK for Kids?
You may know some adults and kids who worry about their weight and say they're going on a diet. You might wonder if you should be on a diet, too. 16 Why? Let's find out.
Dieting to Lose Weight
17 When someone diets to lose weight, the person is trying to eat fewer calories than the body consumes. By doing this, the person may lose body fat and decrease his or her weight. Likewise, if a person eats more calories than the body consumes, the person may gain weight.
Kids usually do not need to diet in this way. 18 During this time, kids need a variety of healthy foods to keep their bodies growing properly. Some kids are overweight, but even overweight kids often can improve their health simply by eating nutritious foods and being more active.
19 But kids may hurt their health even more by doing something extreme (极端的), like skipping meals or deciding to eat only fruits.
Who Needs to Diet?
Though some people may feel they weigh too much or too little, there is no perfect body shape. Some people have larger frames and will always look bigger and heavier than people with smaller frames.
20 Your doctor can examine you and check your body mass index That's a way of estimating how much body fat you have. If the doctor is concerned about your weight, he or she can recommend a couple of goals:
for you to gain weight at a slower pace
for you to maintain your current weight
For some kids, the doctor may recommend losing some weight, but this should be done with the doctor's help. Kids who need to lose weight may visit with a dietitian who can explain how to reduce calories safely still getting all the necessary nutrients.
A.All foods and many drinks contain calories.
B.It is important to form a good eating habit.
C.Being overweight can cause health problems.
D.Not eating properly can be very harmful to kids.
E.Unlike adults, kids are still growing and developing.
F.Talk to your doctor if you have questions about your weight.
G.But most kids do not need to — and should not — diet this way.

Already Perfect
Each one of us struggles with self-worth to some degree.I spent much of my time attempting to achieve perfection in every aspect of my life. What I didn't realize was that in my efforts to be perfect, I almost lost my life.
During my childhood, I wanted everyone's praise and acceptance. After I graduated from high school, my struggles with self-worth increased.I began to put pressure on myself to succeed in the adult world.Meanwhile, I wasn't feeling very confident and successful.I started to believe that my difficulties and “failures” in life were caused by my weight.I had always been a thin-to-average sized person.Suddenly, I was convinced that I was overweight. In my mind, I was FAT!
Slowly, I began to control my food by trying to diet, but nothing seemed to work.I continued to reduce what I ate each day and told myself that I would succeed, and in turn, I felt good about myself.
People around me began to notice my weight loss.At first, they weren't alarmed; maybe some were even envious. But then the comments showed some concern.“You're losing too much weight.” “Elisa, you're so thin.” “You look sick.” “You'll die if you keep this up.” All their words only made me believe that I was on the right path, getting closer to “perfection.”
My poor nutrition (营养) began to cause me to lose sleep.I found it hard to concentrate on my work or to focus on anything for a long time.I was pushing myself harder and harder at the gym struggling to burn fat.My parents tried to stop me but I disagreed that I had a problem.None of my clothes fit, and it was hard to buy any, since I had become too thin!
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
Then one night, I couldn't sleep again, and my heart beat its way out of my chest. ____
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I lay on the hospital bed, I began to rethink what I did to my body. ______________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then one night, I couldn't sleep again, and my heart beat its way out of my chest.I tried to relax, but I couldn't.The beating became so rapid and so strong that I could no longer breathe.Really scared and ill, I felt I was going to die.Knowing that help was needed, I stood up, went towards the door, and immediately fell down, letting out a cry of pain.Awakened by the unusual sound, my parents came in to see what had happened.Shocked and worried, they rushed me to the hospital. It took doctors and nurses several hours to bring me back to life.
When I lay on the hospital bed, I began to rethink what I did to my body.I decided to stop my foolish way of losing weight and pursuing perfection.Instead, I must be confident of myself and stay committed to being healthy.I now use my intelligence, talents and acts of kindness to express myself. This is true beauty, and it has nothing to do with the size of my body. With my experience of trying to be “perfect” on the outside, I had forgotten who I was on the inside. What I know now is that we are — each and every one of us — already perfect.

Jennifer was found to have dangerously low blood sugar levels and was treated immediately. They say that she has struggled with eating problems for a long time. her target weight,” her friend Laura Williams told our reporter. “She has not eaten breakfast for the last few months.
————————————————————————————————————————
Jennifer's case is a reminder of the dangers of the unhealthy weight-loss habits that have become common among teenagers of both sexes. In a society where being thin is often seen as being beautiful, teenagers sometimes turn to extreme methods to slim down quickly. According to a recent survey of senior high school students' lifestyles, almost one fifth of teenagers regularly skip meals, one in ten over-exercise and four per cent even take weight-loss medicine. Health experts are concerned about these figures. They are increasing their efforts to educate teenagers about the side effects of losing weight too quickly. They have also warned them against using such extreme methods.

————————————————————————————————————————
“These so-called ‘quick-fix methods’ prove to be harmful to teenagers. It is normal for teenagers to be slightly overweight However, for those who are,” said an expert.
————————————————————————————————————————

[难句破解] ⑤句:that引导宾语从句;宾语从句中it作形式主语,不定式短语to have a healthy balanced diet作真正的主语;since引导原因状语从句,不定式短语to function well作目的状语。
课文2 Don't judge a book by its cover(不要以貌取人)
————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————
[难句破解] ①句:it作形式主语,不定式短语to guard against the causes behind them作真正的主语。
————————————————————————————————————————
Standards of beauty in the media can have a big influence on what you think of your physical appearance. Teens who try to copy the looks of their favourite stars are fighting a losing battle — these standards are simply impossible for most of the population to live up to. They will only end up feeling worse about themselves.
————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————
Your friends also influence the way you view your physical appearance. If you have friends who are , it can feel like you are living in their shadow. For children of the digital age, social media makes this problem even worse. Your friends may post a never-ending series of photos online to show off their beautiful dresses or strong bodies, and compare yourself to them. This has proved to have a negative effect on what you think of your physical appearance.
————————————————————————————————————————
③句:it作形式主语,不定式短语to compare yourself to them作真正的主语。
————————————————————————————————————————
These external influences are always present, but there are certainly ways to deal with them. First of all, be careful not to follow popular beauty standards blindly. They are out of reach for 99% of us, so it is better to just forget about them.
————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————
Keep in mind that your family and friends love you just the way you are. Talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Hearing how much they value you can help you feel comfortable in your own skin. Focusing on your strengths also helps you build your confidence. Everyone has their own talents — you may be good at painting or playing the piano, so take pride in things you do well instead of worrying about things you cannot change.
————————————————————————————————————————
————————————————————————————————————————
Finally, it is a good idea to try to direct your attention away from negative thoughts. To achieve this, you should do something you enjoy. Read a book you like, or take part in a social activity, like playing a ball game with your friends. These things can help you take your mind off matters that worry you and make you feel good about yourself.
You may often judge yourself by what is on the outside, not on the inside. However, like a book, your contents are much more important than your cover. If you can learn to see the good things about yourself — your individuality, your value to others, your achievements — you will soon begin to love yourself just the way you are.
————————————————————————————————————————

My family and I belonged to a country club located across the street from the Long Island Sound. Each summer, the big attraction for us was the pool.I learned how to swim and joined the swimming team but was never really a good swimmer. However, swimming in my younger days was a way to keep cool, and swimming on a team gave me identity and a sense of belonging. It also became invaluable many years later.
Fast-forward (快进) to 1973 — I was married, pregnant and had a home. What made our little home even more wonderful was when I discovered that four blocks away was Rath Park Pool! For the next 30 years, most of our summer days were spent around that pool.
Each of my five kids took swimming lessons and learned all the different swimming strokes (姿势).They later joined the swim team and competed in meets. My daughter even became a lifeguard at the town pool.I sat back and happily took it all in!
As much as I would have liked to have life stand still, it doesn't. My children outgrew their pool days and moved on.But the pool was still four blocks from my home, so I began to take up swimming again. And it was far better than I ever could have imagined.I got so much out of it that I joined the local pool so I could swim year-round.Whenever I swam, I would always come out feeling physically and mentally refreshed.I often felt that if I looked hard enough, I would be able to see all of the worries and problems I've had in life, sitting at the bottom of the pool!
What has swimming taught me? I've learned that balance is the key to being a good swimmer. If you are balanced in the water, you have no resistance.Working on staying balanced made me realize the similarities between life in and out of the swim lane (泳道). If you work on keeping yourself balanced, you will be able to swim right through the stress and problems life throws at you!

Here's something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: Struggling with schoolwork on your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning.“Don't be too quick to get help when learning something new,” education expert Manu Kapur told TIME for Kids.“Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.”
Kapur came up with the idea that struggling can lead to better learning. Then he tested it out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help. In the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.
With the teacher's help, students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. Students in the second group did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas. The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the process, not just the solution.
Kapur's advice for kids is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to your teacher for help.“Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won't work,” says Kapur.“The struggle needs to be a genuine attempt to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible.”

Last week was Sports Day at my daughter's school. She was part of the Yellow House. She had to wear yellow and race for points. The Yellow House won.I was really pleased for my daughter because last year the Green House won.In fact, when the winning house was announced last year, many little faces turned sour. There were many tears and children were bitter because they had lost.
Losing is never fun. From a young age children know that winning is the best result. As parents, we can talk to children about the importance of everyone having a chance to win; we can teach our children to be happy for their friends when a friend wins.
As children grow older they will be exposed to more and more competition. It is important that we teach our children to learn to “bounce back” from losses, to experience loss in a positive way and to keep on going even when they don't achieve the desired outcome.
By teaching children how to be resilient (适应性强的), we can prepare them for adult life in the future. Our children can learn to compete for fun and learn how to bounce back from life's failures and disappointments.
We can talk to our children about competition. We can teach by example and show our kids that losing a game or failing a test is not the end.Losing is simply a chance to try again and a chance to become more successful.
Raising emotionally healthy children is very important for the future generation and by teaching our children the above principles we can help them to overcome the difficulties of life and they will learn to compete in healthy ways throughout their lives.

Dear students,
As everybody can see in our school, many students don't have good behavior. They don't get up early and are late for school. They throw away rubbish randomly and park their bicycles anywhere as they like. What's worse, they don't behave according to the etiquette rules.
I think it's high time that we should develop good behavior habits when studying at school. For one thing, good habits have a key effect on our characters, which will determine our future. For another thing, good habits are symbols of traditional Chinese virtues, which we are responsible to spread to the world.
Dear friends, if we take action to change our behavior right away, we can make a big difference in the future.

Lily was really looking forward to the coming Friendship Day as she was expecting gifts from her friends. However, when all the presents were shared among her classmates, she was the only one who hadn't received any presents. She felt terrible and cried a lot. She wondered how that was possible. She had made so much effort to be friends with everyone but in the end no one thought of her as one of their best friends.
Everyone came and tried to comfort her for a while but each one only stayed for a short time before leaving. This was exactly what Lily had done so many times to others.
On that day when she got home, her mother saw her sad face. And then her mother asked her the reason for her sadness. “Where can I find true friends?” Lily asked. Her mother was surprised at her question. Then she asked Lily what had happened in school. Her mother comforted her and said, “You cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and love. For a true friend you must always be available, in good times and bad.”
Lily replied, “But I want to be friends with everyone!”

Her mother shook her head. She said, “My dear, you are a lovely girl but you can't be a close friend to everybody. There just isn't enough time available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be playmates but they won't be close friends.” Hearing this, Lily realized that although she was a good classmate, she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone and she had tried to pay attention to everyone but now she had found out that was not enough to create true friendships.
Lily decided to change her ways and thought how she could make true friends. Just thinking about that, she realized her mother was always willing to help her.She put up with all of Lily's dislikes and problems, she always forgave her and she loved her a great deal.Lily smiled from ear to ear.She realized that she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
