These days I have been reading an interesting book called Robinson Crusoe. Do you know about it? It was written by Daniel Defoe. Have you heard of him? He was a famous English writer, who was born in London in 1660 and died in 1731.
Robinson Crusoe is one of the world’s most popular adventure (冒险) novels. It tells a story about an English sailor (海员), whose name is Robinson Crusoe. He is caught in a heavy storm at sea on his way to Africa. After floating (漂浮) for some time, he arrives at an island where there are no people. Paper is one of our oldest, simplest and most important inventions. But it’s also a danger to the world in two ways. First, the making of paper needs lots of trees each year. The world has lost nearly 100 million hectares (公顷) of forests in past twenty years, and it’s going on though at a slower pace than before, a UN agency reported. ★ , 42% went to paper making. And worldwide use of paper will double in the next 40 years. Clearly, the earth cannot sustain (维持) such a high rate of forest loss.
The second great problem with paper is what happens once is no longer useful. A lot of waste paper ends up in Dumps and landfills (垃圾填埋场), where it can give off harmful gases. Paper in landfills leads to the release (释放) of methane (甲烷), a gas that leads to global warming.
We have a simple way to solve the two problems: paper recycling. Paper is mainly made from cellulose (纤维素), which makes up the cell walls of trees and many other plants. Cellulose can be used repeatedly in paper making. So far, trees are the only thing that can meet the great need for paper making. Therefore, recycling paper is simply one of the best ways to save trees.
Thanks to modern technology, recycled paper isn’t the dull-colored thing that many of us are familiar with any more. It now can offer the same print performance as non-recycled paper, Effective (高效的) recycling needs a continuous effort. The way to begin is with education and understanding. Once enough people realize the need for recycling, more effective recycling work can be carried out. The loss of trees affects everybody on earth. Everyone should do that part to recycle paper and encourage government and industries (工业) to do the same.
8. In which pictures can we see the right way to make sure of enough paper for the future?
a. b. c. d.
A. a, d B. a, c C. b, c D. b, d
9. Paper in landfills is harmful because ________.
A. it gives off pleasant gases B. it leads to climate change
C. it pollutes the nearby land D. it may cause fire accidents
10. Which of the following can be put in ★ ?
A. Though people know the importance B. If we don’t plant trees
C. During the years D. Of the trees that were cut down
11. What BIG question does the last paragraph answer?
A. What is recycling? B. How can we save trees?
C. How can we recycle paper effectively? D. What can the government do to save paper?
D
The ocean waters rise and fall along the coast. This movement is called the tide (潮汐). When the tide comes in, the ocean rises. The rocks along the coast are covered in water. When the tide goes out, some of the salt water stays behind in large holes in the rocks. This causes tide pools. The animals that live in tide pools, such as crabs (蟹), sea stars, and mussels (蚌), have to get used to changes in the water. They must face large waves, the hot sun, and hungry meat-eating animals.
When the tide is high, animals in tide pools are covered with water. This protects them from the strong sun. ________ And it can also wash the meat-eating animals away.
When the tide is low, the animals in tide pools have to move to another world. Many of them are no longer covered by water. They are not safe because of the sun’s heat or hungry animals. There is less food for animals such as mussels in the tide pools. Mussels are protected by hard shells (壳). When food passes by, a mussel opens its shell to eat. It closes its shell when danger comes around the corner. Hungry sea stars will hit a mussel, hoping to find a way into its shell. Crabs search for dead plants and animals while keeping away from seagulls (海鸥).
In fact, life in a tide pool is also an adventure like humans.
12. Which of the following sentences can be put in the blank “________”?
A. The tide can bring in food for the animals.
B. They sometimes face hungry meat-eating animals.
C. They even have less food to feed on.
D. The danger may come around the corner.
13. What may a mussel do when food passes by?
A. Find a way to run. B. Keep its shell closed.
C. Open its shell to eat. D. Search for dead plants.
14. When a sea star meets the mussels, what may happen next?
A. A crab would find a way into mussels’ shells. B. Sea gulls would search for the mussels.
C. The sea star would eat the mussels. D. The mussels would open their shells.
15. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Only animals may face adventure in life. B. The animals in tide pools can’t live without water.
C. Humans needn’t face an adventure in life. D. Life is always full of adventure.

七、阅读表达 (共5小题,计10分)
阅读短文,根据要求完成文后的题目。
Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow (彩虹)? When is the best time to see? Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is to book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru (秘鲁).
Rainbow Mountain is a beautiful natural wonder (奇迹). It lies in the Andes in Cusco. Its name suggests the mountain has different colors.
But why is it in yellow, green, red, and purple? The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt (融化), the water mixed with the minerals (矿物质) in the ground and turned the earth into many colors.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing tougher and the colors will look less beautiful. The best time is from March to November, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or evening, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny days may make you not take nice photos.
To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco—a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but it is very challenging. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude (海拔) about 5,200 meters above sea level. So bring enough water and take your time.
41. How does the writer start the passage? (no more than 8 words)
________________________
42. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in Paragraph 2? (no more than 5 words)

My Childhood Treasure
Among all my childhood things, the most precious one is a teddy bear named Brownie. I’ve had it for 10 years since my 5th birthday. It was a gift from my grandmother because she knew I loved soft toys.
What makes Brownie special is not just its cute appearance, but the memories it holds. Whenever I felt lonely, it listened to my secrets silently. Its fur is now a bit worn out, but I still keep it on my bed as a symbol of love and comfort.
Nowadays, though I’m busy with studies, Brownie reminds me of the simple joys of childhood. It teaches me to cherish the people and moments that truly matter.
