②Sleep pressure (压力) is the biggest reason why you fall asleep on the sofa. Sleep pressure is from your body. The longer you’ve been awake, the greater the sleep pressure.
③Your environment also helps your fall asleep. You might have just eaten a meal, your very comfortable sofa is in a warm room, and maybe with a TV program in the background. For many people, this environment is perfect for falling asleep.
④Then what happens after a nap (小睡) on the sofa? If you just fell asleep on the sofa for five minutes, you might not have too much trouble getting to sleep in bed. In 1883, an engineer named John Roebling thought of an idea to build a great bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However, all other bridge experts thought this was an impossible thing. Roebling thought about the bridge all the time and he knew in his heart that it could be done. Finally he managed to make his son Washington, a promising (有前途的) engineer believe that the bridge could be built.
The project started well, but only a few months later an accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was badly hurt and couldn’t walk or talk or even move any more.
“We told them so.” “Crazy men and their crazy dreams.” “It’s foolish to build such a bridge.”
Everyone laughed at them and felt that the project should be stopped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. However, Washington still had a strong wish to complete the bridge.
He tried to encourage his workers, but they wanted to give up. As he lay on his bed in hospital room, he was able to see the sky. It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. ▲ All he could do was to move one finger and he decided to use his finger.
He touched his wife’s arm with that finger, talking to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same way of tapping (轻拍) her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was going on again.
For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the grand Brooklyn Bridge stands in wonderfully as a praise to the success of one man’s determination (决心).
12. Why did John Roebling want to build a great bridge?
