M: Brandeis University has launched its study abroad program in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Led by Sally Warner, professor of climate science, the program aims to get students to learn about the impacts of climate change on a Caribbean island that has been damaged by powerful hurricanes, rising seas and warming temperatures throughout the past decade. Over the course of five weeks in late May and June, 12 Brandeis students took environmental studies courses. They learned about basic knowledge of ocean and sustainable development issues that affect the entire Caribbean region. They also took a course in Spanish language and Puerto Rican culture. The trip also gave students the chance to live and work among locals who have lived through hurricanes. “I have seen how the strength and support of a community is crucial to rebuilding after climate change disasters — and in overcoming climate change itself.” Warner said. That’s exactly the sort of lesson that Warner hopes all students take away from the program. A Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early 1950s. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians. Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from Britain invaded America: the Beatles. Some people say the Beatles’ music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any other musical groups before them. The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was one of the first “concept” albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea. The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from Britain to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960’s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, Satisfaction. The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960s. His Purple Haze was liked by many people. By the 1970s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, heavy metal rock, punk rock, jazz rock and glitter rock. In the middle 1970s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album Born to Run. Springsteen’s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early 1960s. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam. 21. The main topic of this passage is___________. A. the history of American music B. the development of rock and roll music C. the famous rock and roll groups D. the new forms of rock and roll music 22. Which of the following matches is NOT true? A. the Beatles — Chuck Berry B. the Rolling Stones — Satisfaction C. Jimi Hendrix — Purple Haze D. Bruce Springsteen — Born to Run 23. Whose songs were mainly about social problems like unemployment and war? A. Elvis Presley’s. B. Bob Dylan’s. C. Jimi Hendrix’s. D. Springsteen’s. B 22. A 23. 由文章第一段“Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early 1950s. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians.(摇滚乐于20世纪50年代初在美国发展起来。它基于非裔美国音乐家演奏的节奏蓝调音乐。)”、第二段“Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from Britain invaded America: the Beatles.(早期的摇滚歌手发展出了自己的音乐风格。埃尔维斯·普雷斯利、查克·贝里、海滩男孩和鲍勃·迪伦是20世纪60年代初最受欢迎的摇滚音乐家。他们都是美国人。然后,在1964年,一个来自英国的新摇滚乐队入侵了美国:披头士乐队。)”以及下文可知,文章主要讲摇滚乐的发展。故选B项。 【22题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第三段“Some people say the Beatles’ music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any other musical groups before them.(有人说披头士的音乐像地震一样震撼了美国。披头士乐队永远地改变了摇滚乐。他们早期的歌曲受到了包括Chuck Berry在内的美国摇滚音乐家的影响。但披头士乐队看起来不同,听起来也不同于他们之前的任何其他音乐团体。)”可知,Chuck Berry并不属于披头士乐队。故选A项。 由文章最后一段“Springsteen’s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early 1960s. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.(Springsteen的音乐就像20世纪60年代初活跃的摇滚乐。他的许多歌曲都是关于社会问题的。他歌唱失业和越南战争的影响。)”可知,Springsteen的歌曲主要是关于失业和战争等社会问题。故选D项。 B The lights from the cottage windows disappear, as we follow a dark footpath through a field into the open countryside. Thick clouds prevent the moonlight from lighting up the way ahead. Yet, as my eyes begin to get used to the darkness, the landscape around me reveals itself in a new light. Mount Caburn, an iron-age hill fort, looks like shadows against the sky. On the horizon is a tree bent by the wind. The outcrop (露出的部分) at the top of the field turns out to be a flock of sleeping sheep. A fox cries, a pheasant (野鸡) crows, and the air is full of a strong earthy scent. “For most of human history, man lived in close contact with the land,” says Nigel Berman, my guide. “Only in the past few hundred years have we shut ourselves off from our natural surroundings. Walking at night is a powerful way of reconnecting. When your vision is reduced, your other senses are sharpened.” Nigel and I walk from the village of Glynde across the South Downs towards the town of Lewes. It is a walk I know well by day, but at night everything is different, and a familiar stroll becomes a mini adventure. When Nigel told me not to bring a torch, I was alarmed. I can’t remember the last time I used my night vision and I’m not even sure how it works. Normally, at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation. I forget about work and family tensions, and begin to blend into the surroundings. There is no one other than Nigel to see or hear me and, with little visual distraction, my mind calms. I am aware of the breeze on my face, the rustle (沙沙声) of leaves, and as I watch the clouds slowly changing colour against the sky like a natural sound and light show, it feels mesmeric. As we reach the top, Lewes appears below as a twinkly mass of lights, a sight I would generally consider inviting. In just a few hours, however, I find myself reluctant to walk back down. Walking at night is like discovering a new world on your doorstep. As Henry David Thoreau wrote in Night and Moonlight: “Night is certainly more novel and less profane (世俗的) than day.” 24. The underlined word in the last but one paragraph probably means “________”. A. interesting B. fascinating C. frightening D. disappointing 25. According to the article, what was the author’s greatest concern before the night walk? A. That he might disturb wild animals. B. That he wouldn’t be able to see without a torch. C. That he might feel bored along the way. D. That he would encounter bad weather. 26. According to the article, the author did NOT see ________ during the night walk. ①rare birds ②a new moon ③farm animals ④leafless trees ⑤moving clouds A. ①②④ B. ①③⑤ C. ①②③④ D. ②③④⑤ 27. What can we infer from the article about the author? A. He had gone for a walk on his own at night before. B. He intentionally picked a cloudy night for his walk. C. He successfully reached the top of the mountain before sunrise. D. He started to know how to manage family tensions after the night walk. B 25. B 26. A 27. 根据画线词的上文“Normally, at this time of night, I would be having a glass of wine in front of the television, but being out in the countryside is a purer form of relaxation. I forget about work and family tensions, and begin to blend into the surroundings. (通常在这个深夜时分,我本该端着酒杯坐在电视机前。但此刻置身乡野,却体验到了一种更为纯粹的放松。工作的压力、家庭的烦忧都被抛诸脑后,我渐渐与周围的环境融为一体)”可知,在夜间行走让作者感到放松,作者开始融入环境;再结合画线词所在句“I am aware of the breeze on my face, the rustle (沙沙声) of leaves, and as I watch the clouds slowly changing colour against the sky like a natural sound and light show (我能感受到微风拂面,听见树叶沙沙作响,当我注视着云朵在天空中缓缓变幻色彩,宛如一场天然的光影秀时)”可知,作者深切感受着自然景象的变化,此时作者应该觉得这幅景象是迷人的,画线词意思是“迷人的”,与fascinating“迷人的”含义最接近。 根据第四段中“When Nigel told me not to bring a torch, I was alarmed. I can’t remember the last time I used my night vision and I’m not even sure how it works. (当Nigel叫我不要带手电筒时,我感到很惊慌。我记不清上一次使用夜视能力是什么时候了,甚至不确定它是否还管用)”可知,作者最大的担忧是没有手电筒可能无法看清路。故选B项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Thick clouds prevent the moonlight from lighting up the way ahead. (厚厚的云层遮蔽了月光,使得前方的道路一片漆黑)”、第二段中“The outcrop (露出的部分) at the top of the field turns out to be a flock of sleeping sheep. (田地边缘隆起的小丘,原来是一群熟睡的羊)”和第五段中“as I watch the clouds slowly changing colour against the sky like a natural sound and light show (当我注视着云朵在天空中缓缓变幻色彩,宛如一场天然的光影秀时)”可知,作者看到了农场的动物和移动的云,未见到稀有鸟类、新月和无叶的树。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“As we reach the top, Lewes appears below as a twinkly mass of lights, a sight I would generally consider inviting. (当我们登顶时,Lewes镇在下方闪烁着点点灯火——这般景象平日定会让我心驰神往)”可知,作者登上山顶时镇上仍都亮着灯,由此推知此时还没日出。故选C项。 C This past Earth Day, people who usually celebrated by heading outdoors relied on virtual tours instead. It was a fitting opportunity to experience virtual reality(VR) technology that some experts had advanced as an ecofriendly solution to the problem of over-tourism. But will interest in traveling virtually last beyond the pandemic? For years, travel agencies have used VR technology to market destinations to potential customers. Now, “the impact of COVID-19 may allow it to shake off its image of being a gimmick (噱头),” says Ralph Hollister, a tourism analyst at Global Data. Virtual travel experiences are seeing a surge in popularity. Valeriy Kondruk, CEO of VR travel company Ascape, has seen app downloads grow 60 percent from December 2019. Still, there is a big gap between using VR to “try before you buy” and treating VR like the destination itself. To start with, the technology is not ready yet. 360-degree VR videos are usually experienced through a headset or an app. The headsets are expensive, heavy, and uncomfortable to wear for more than 30 minutes. The apps have none of these problems, but simply are not as impressive. Limited sensations are another hurdle. The videos focus on the sights and sounds of a place but cannot do much with its smell, touch or taste. Of course, researchers are working on ever-more-immersive VR features. But while creating a full-body suit with enhanced sensory experiences might make a video of the Antarctica more realistic, it still does not fulfill the deeper needs that motivate us to travel. Tourists are neither locals nor business travelers. They tend to be less directed in their explorations and more focused on new discoveries. This simply cannot be recreated in VR. In 2015, I experienced VR travel using a headset to demo a short tour of the north coast of Vancouver. The demo looked similar to the real place, which I visited four years later. In other ways, though, there was little comparison. Much of the difference was the specificity of my own actual visit: I had full control over what I was able to hear and see. VR may never replace traditional travel, but it still offers various possibilities. Most importantly, it could help bring people to places that are otherwise inaccessible. Kondruk’s travel company, for instance, has been working with a major Vietnamese travel agency on recreating areas of the country where the government has limited tourist travel. Ultimately, the impact of VR on travel will be determined by the evolution of new technologies. So far, advances have been incremental — not at a scale that is likely to disrupt the travel industry or support a drop in travel-related carbon emissions after the pandemic has ended. In bringing faraway places closer, VR encourages travelers to embrace sustainable practices wherever they choose to go (or not go) in the future. 28. According to the article, which of the following are the main disadvantages of virtual travel? ①Indirect participation. ②Immature technology. ③Over-processed landscape. ④A lack of sensory experiences. A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④ 29. According to the article, who is most likely to choose virtual travel over making an actual visit? A. A travel agent who is tired of working on holidays. B. A university professor who specializes in African culture. C. An environmentalist who aims to reduce her carbon footprint. D. A salesman who has to make business trips to different countries. 30. According to the article, VR technology _________. A. was once seen as a sales trick used by travel agencies B. is expected to make significant progress in the short term C. has had a negative influence on the development of traditional travel D. has been widely applied to tourism since the outbreak of COVID-19 31. According to the author, the future of virtual travel is _________. A. exciting B. alarming C. uncertain D. promising 【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第三段“To start with, the technology is not ready yet.(首先,这项技术目前还不成熟)”;第四段“The videos focus on the sights and sounds of a place but can-not do much with its smell, touch or taste.(这些视频主要展现了某个地方的景象和声音,但对于其气味、触感或味道却无法进行深入描述)”以及第五段“They tend to be less directed in their explorations and more focused on new discoveries.(他们的探索往往没有那么明确的方向,而更注重新的发现)”可知,间接参与、技术不成熟、缺乏感官体验是虚拟旅行的主要缺点。 根据第一段“It was a fitting opportunity to experience virtual reality(VR) technology that some experts had advanced as an ecofriendly solution to the problem of over-tourism.(这是一个绝佳的机会,让我们得以亲身体验虚拟现实(VR)技术。一些专家曾将这种技术视为解决过度旅游问题的环保型解决方案)”可知,最有可能选择虚拟旅行而非实际前往实地考察的人是一位致力于减少自身碳足迹的环保主义者。故选C。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“Now, “the impact of COVID-19 may allow it to shake off its image of being a gimmick (噱头),” says Ralph Hollister, a tourism analyst at Global Data.(全球数据公司的旅游分析师拉尔夫·霍利斯特表示:“此次新冠疫情的影响或许能让该品牌摆脱‘噱头’的形象。”)” 故选A。 根据最后一段“Ultimately, the impact of VR on travel will be determined by the evolution of new technologies. So far, advances have been incremental — not at a scale that is likely to disrupt the travel industry or support a drop in travel-related carbon emissions after the pandemic has ended. In bringing faraway places closer, VR encourages travelers to embrace sustainable practices wherever they choose to go (or not go) in the future.(最终,虚拟现实技术对旅游业的影响将取决于新技术的发展进程。目前,技术的进步是渐进式的——其规模还不足以对旅游业造成重大冲击,也无法在疫情结束后促使与旅游相关的碳排放量下降。通过让遥远的地方变得近在咫尺,虚拟现实鼓励游客无论未来选择前往何处(或不去何处),都能践行可持续的旅行方式)”可知,虚拟旅行的未来前景十分乐观。故选D。 D Michael and his wife had recently moved into a new apartment building in San Francisco when they met their neighbor, a Hindu priest The 77-year-old priest, Jeff Dunan, told them about an organization he volunteers for, Bangladesh (孟加拉国) Relief — which provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Michael decided to donate to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign, and settled on $150. Shortly after making his donation, though, Michael received a notification from his credit card company, warning him of an unusually large transaction (交易). He swiped to open the text message, which mentioned a $15,041 charge from GoFundMe. When he saw the five-figure number, he was bewildered. Soon, it all made sense. Michael’s credit card number started with four and one. Clearly, he accidentally began typing his credit card information while his cursor (光标) was still in the donation box. Michael called GoFundMe‘s support line and explained the mistaken donation. To his relief, he was told that he would be refunded (退款) within three to seven business days. Still, the $15,000 donation — which more than doubled the total amount raised at the time — would remain on the GoFundMe page until the refund was processed. Michael planned to call Dunan to explain, but before he had the chance to do that, he started receiving Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity's Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his generous donation. “I start swiping through the man’s messages, ” said Michael, “and it is picture after picture after picture of poor Bangladeshis thanking me for my kind donation. ” After he looked through the photos of people holding thank-you signs that read his name, Michael’s heart sank. He felt terrible that he had to withdraw his handsome donation. Once his original contribution was refunded, he decided to donate $1,500. Although Michael had told his family and friends about the typo (打字错误) tale, he decided to share it publicly on social media, after Dunan told him the organization was desperately in need of funds. “The least I could do was take the time to post this story online and see if I could inspire other people to donate to the cause, ” Michael said. Little did he know, though, that the story would be seen far and wide, ending up raising more than $120,000 for Bangladesh Relief in the span of only a few weeks — about eight times Michael's mistaken donation. According to Dunan, more than 3,700 people have contributed because of Michael’s post. Michael has been stunned by the ongoing outpouring of support. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this reaction, ” he said. “People can be amazing when they come together for something like this. ” 32. According to the article, Michael had planned to donate $150 to Bangladesh Relief, but mistakenly gave ________. A. $1,500 B. $12,000 C. $15,000 D. $15,041 33. According to the article, Michael initially ________ after finding that he hadn't given the intended amount of money. A. turned to his neighbor for help B. posted the story on social media C. asked for a refund from GoFundMe D. told his family and friends the story 34. This event was her golden ticket to let peers and teachers witness how she perceived the world uniquely through vivid colors and delicate brushstrokes. For weeks, she’d buried herself in creating a painting themed on “Seasons of Hope”, pouring her soul into every detail, from the blooming spring flowers to the frost-kissed winter branches. The canvas (画布) felt like a piece of her. However, a heart-breaking accident ruined everything. One evening, reaching for white paint to add snow, her elbow knocked over a jar of deep blue. The color splashed across the canvas, ruining the careful transition from autumn to winter. With merely three days until the submission deadline, panic squeezed her chest. To make matters worse, the next day in a gym class she sprained her right wrist. Now, holding a brush sent sharp pain up her arm, and her hand trembled too much to make steady lines. She stared at the damaged painting and her useless hand, tears blurring her vision. Despair overwhelmed her, as if her artistic dream was slipping away. Lily’s best friend Tom sensed something was wrong. He had seen her excitement when talking about the art show, and now that spark was gone, replaced by a hollow, listless look. Determined to help, he racked his brain for ways to lift her spirits. Meanwhile, Mrs. Smith, the art teacher, had noticed, too. She’d seen Lily’s sketches for “Seasons of Hope” and admired their warmth; now, the girl’s slumped shoulders and avoided glances told a story of despair. She found herself wondering how to remind Lily that art, like life, often finds beauty in unexpected places. Tom showed up at Lily’s house with a box of craft supplies, a big idea forming in his mind. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mrs. Smith walked over after class, holding an old sketchbook (素描本). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Tom showed up at Lily’s house with a box of craft supplies, a big idea forming in his mind. “What if we turn the blue splash into something beautiful?” he suggested, dumping out glitter, tissue paper, and foam shapes. He helped Lily prop up the canvas, and together they brainstormed. The deep blue became a starry night sky over the winter scene — Tom cut out silver stars from foam, and Lily, using her left hand with his steadying help, glued them on. Her sprained wrist still ached, but laughter replaced tears as they worked. By midnight, the “ruined” transition now held a magical glow, with constellations twinkling above the frost-kissed branches. “See?” Tom grinned happily, “Mistakes can be doorways.” Mrs. Smith walked over after class, holding an old sketchbook. Flipping to a page, she revealed a watercolor where a coffee stain had been transformed into a sunset. “I spilled on this 20 years ago,” she said softly. “At first I cried, then realized the stain added depth that no brush could mimic.” She pointed to Lily’s canvas. “That blue isn’t a disaster — it’s a chance to make everyone surprised, including yourself.” Lily traced the starry sky with her good hand. With new courage, she picked up a sponge in her left hand, dabbing light blue around the stars to make them glow. Three days later, “Seasons of Hope” hung in the show, its unexpected night sky drawing more gasps than any perfect transition ever could. 建议:suggest/advise/recommend ②.帮助:help/do sb a favor/assist ③.代替:replace/take the place of 情绪类 ①.高兴地:happily/gladly/merrily ②. B The lights from the cottage windows disappear, as we follow a dark footpath through a field into the open countryside. C This past Earth Day, people who usually celebrated by heading outdoors relied on virtual tours instead. According to the author, the future of virtual travel is _________. A. exciting B. alarming C. uncertain D. promising D Michael and his wife had recently moved into a new apartment building in San Francisco when they met their neighbor, a Hindu priest The 77-year-old priest, Jeff Dunan, told them about an organization he volunteers for, Bangladesh (孟加拉国) Relief — which provides food, clothing and essential supplies for disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. According to the article, Michael later changed his mind about his donation ________. A. on the advice of Bangladesh Relief's manager B. after he found that Bangladesh Relief was really short of money C. because he was told that he would be refunded in a couple of days D. after the kind Bangladeshis expressed gratitude towards him online 35. What can we learn from Michael’s story? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Virtue is its own reward. C. It's the thought that counts. D. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
