I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch He has let me use his house to 21 fund-raising events to raise money for at-risk youth programs.
The last time I was there, he introduced me by saying, “I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.”

He put a great deal of 23 into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”
“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I receive an F?’” “The teacher said, ‘This is an 24 dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. “The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. I can’t help you this time. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’”
“Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.’”
Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The 27 part of the story is that two summers ago that same school teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, ‘Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream 28 . An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside the river. They were disputing which was the better animal.
“Look at my strength,”said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree, roots and everything with my trunk.” “Ah! But your skin is not so thick as mine,”replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.” Just as they were coming to blows, a lion happened to pass. “My dear friends!”said the king of all animals, going up to them. “Let me know the cause of your disagreement.” “Will you kindly tell us which is the better animal?” cried both at once.
“Certainly,” said the lion, pointing across the river. “Do you see the soldier’s metal hat on that wall?”
“Yes!” replied the beasts. “Well, then,”continued the lion, “go and get it, and bring it to me, and then I shall be able to decide between you.”
Upon hearing this, off they started. The crocodile, being used to the water, reached the opposite side of the river first, and was soon standing beside the wall. Here he waited till the elephant came up. The elephant, seeing that the crocodile had no way of reaching their goal, raised his long trunk, and took down the hat quite easily.

When he was forced to turn sharply to avoid a floating tree branch, the elephant dropped the hat, and it fell into the river. When the teacher asks if anyone can speak in front of the class, you lower your head. When you go to the restroom or dining hall, you always try to find someone to go with you because you are afraid of being seen alone. Is that you?

From April 8, 2025, pet owners can bring their cats or dogs on high-speed trains along the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. However, pets will travel in a special area designed for them.
Why This Service Matters
Many people in China want to travel with their pets. In 2022, new rules stopped passengers from bringing animals on trains, except on some slow trains. In 2024, a survey showed people’s strong interest in pet-friendly travel, and it led to this new service.
Cost of the Service
Prices depend on travel distance (距离). For example, a trip under 1,000 km normally costs 558 yuan, but during the trial (试行) period, it is 360 yuan. A trip between 1,000—1,500 km normally costs 658 yuan, but during the trial period, it is 460 yuan.
How to Use the Service
Passengers must book tickets at least two days early through the 12306 website or app. Pets must be healthy, weigh no more than 15 kg, and be under 40 cm tall. Owners also need to show their ID and their pets’ health papers.
During the Journey
Train workers will check on the pets every two hours and provide water, but owners cannot visit or feed their pets.
Public Opinions
Some pet owners are happy. A person from Shenzhen said, “I hope more trains will allow pets so I can take my cat to visit family in Nanjing.” Others worry that pets feel stressed in the special area.
This service is a big step toward making travel easier for pet owners, but improvements may still be needed in the future.
64.What did the survey in 2024 show?
65.How much will people pay for a pet on an 800-km trip during the trial period?
66.What are the requirements for pets to use the service?
67.How often will the train workers check on the pets during the journey?
68.What do you think of the service? Why?
A new app called Face Mapping, invented by scientists at Oxford University, can check our facial expressions to judge our mood and then suggest the perfect food to cheer us up, or to make us get rid of anxiety. Face Mapping scans (扫描) the face for signs of emotions, such as downturned lips, eyes, and frown lines, and it can often pick up feelings which are hidden in a
person’s heart and he may not notice.
“Face Mapping can provide a more correct and objective conclusion of a person’s mood or feeling than he himself can feel,” said Prof Spence. More and more evidence shows our mood has an important effect on our smell and taste—it can stop us from receiving the right signals of smell and taste. However, food can also influence our mood. People often stop eating when they are unhappy because food simply does not taste as good as it tastes when people are happy.
It can test anger, disgust, fear, surprise, sadness and joy and make menu suggestions according to what it finds. For example, an angry face suggests that a person is stressed and he needs food that can bring happiness to him, such as dark chocolate and nuts. In contrast (相反), people who are excited may benefit from food which makes their blood sugar (血糖) normal,
such as grains and beans.
“Face Mapping is at the top of the science and technology. And in the future, it is likely to become more popular,” Prof Spence added.

根据下文“...and enjoy the flowers and the singing of birds.”
故填to。
故填to care。
