Add a comment here.
Liu Jiayue,
Singapore
We have 11 public holidays every year. Holidays like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, and Deepavali have two days off, while others have one day off. Take Deepavali as an example. It is the Hindu Festival of Lights. It celebrates the success of light over darkness and good over evil. People in Singapore are from many different cultures. This way, they can learn more about each other.
Larry House,
UK
In England, there are usually eight bank holidays each year. The holidays have this name because at first, only banks had those days off. They were soon seen as national holidays, too. Some are set to mark important days, such as Christmas. Others may celebrate old traditions in England. For example, we celebrate the beginning of summer and the efforts (努力) of workers on May Day.
Jaehyun,
South Korea
A lot of holidays in South Korea are also celebrated worldwide, such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But there’s a special holiday, called Chuseok, and it takes place around September each year. It’s a festival about collecting food grown on farms and family getting together. We get to eat half-moon-shaped treats, songpyeon, a kind of rice cake and believe it symbolizes happiness and togetherness.

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well the shiny receiver in the box on the wall. I was too little to reach the telephone, but I knew that somewhere inside the wonderful telephone lived an amazing person—her name was Information Please. She could provide anybody’s number and the correct time.
One day, while my mom was out, I hit my finger. It hurt a lot, but no one was home to help. Then I thought of the telephone! I pulled a small chair over, climbed up, and called Information Please. A soft voice said, “Information.” I cried about my finger, and she told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate.
When our pet bird Petey died, I called her in tears. “Why do birds sing so beautifully and make everyone happy, only to die with their feet up at the bottom of a cage (笼子)?” I asked. She said softly, “Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in.” Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her. Years later, when my plane stopped in Seattle, I called the operator (接线员) in my hometown for “Information Please”. To my surprise, Sally’s voice answered! I asked her to spell “fix”, just like when I was little. She laughed and told me my calls made her day—as she had no kids, she’d looked forward to talking with me.
Three months later, when I called again, a different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: “Tell Paul I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll understand.”
52. What was Sally’s job?
A. A children’s helper. B. A primary school teacher. C. A telephone operator.
53. Which words can best describe Sally?
A. Patient and kind. B. Shy and truthful. C. Quiet and talented.
54. Why did Paul keep calling Sally over the years?
A. He needed help with pet advice.
B. He got friendship and comfort from her.
C. He was lonely and needed someone to talk to.
55. What does “there are other worlds to sing in” from the passage mean?
A. Birds fly to magical places when they die.
B. Imagine happy places when you are sad.
C. Love and happiness don’t stop with death.
56. What could be the best title for the story?
A. Memories of a Childhood Pet.

The Art of War is a book written over 2,500 years ago by Sun Tzu, a Chinese strategist (战略家). Living during the Spring and Autumn period, Sun had a good knowledge of war (战争) strategies. The book’s 13 chapters (篇章) cover different parts of war. Surprisingly, its lessons can help solve everyday problems! They teach skills. Here are three of them.
“Winning comes to those who know when to act and when to walk away,” Sun Tzu wrote. This means choosing fights wisely. For example, if a classmate says something unkind, staying cool might be better than shouting. Not every small argument needs a big fight.
Leadership isn’t just about giving orders—it’s about thinking smartly and making good plans. “Work on your weak points, not your strong ones,” Sun Tzu said. Imagine studying for a hard test: spend more time on your weakest subject first. He also said, “Understand yourself and your competitor, and you can fight a hundred battles (战役) with no danger of losing.” Know your strengths and weaknesses to make better plans for schoolwork.
“Change like water,” Sun Tzu taught. If your soccer team’s plan isn’t working, try new ways! Life doesn’t always go as you expect. Being able to change helps you catch good chances. Change like water, and you’ll grow!
This ancient book is still popular to this day around the world, whether in wars, politics, business, sports or relationships. Next time when you face a challenge, ask what Sun Tzu would do. His ancient advice might just help you succeed!

At a time when AI scams (诈骗) are on the rise, UK mobile phone company Virgin Media O2 is fighting back with an AI grandma named Daisy.
Daisy looks like your grandmother: She loves knitting and talking about her family, and has a cat named Fluffy. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find that it was created to answer scam calls and keep scammers busy.
Here’s how Daisy works. If a phone scammer happens to call one of the special numbers set up by the company, an AI chatbot that sounds like a real grandma answers the phone. O2 says it trained this AI chatbot on several AI technologies and several AI models.
With the development of the call, the AI listens and turns their voice into text. Then the AI searches its large database (数据库) to find an answer, and changes that text answer into a speech for Daisy to reply. All this happens in seconds.
Unluckily for scammers, while Daisy might sound easy to cheat, Daisy isn’t an easy target. Daisy is so lifelike that she has successfully talked with lots of scammers for 40 minutes at a time. During the scam calls, she might tell stories about her grandkids or hobbies, or give out wrong banking information. Either way, she’s keeping the scammers on the line so that they have less time to cheat real people. And that’s the whole point—Daisy can’t stop scammers, but she can slow them down.
77. Who is Daisy?

78. Why was Daisy created?

B. The Kind Voice on the Phone.
C. Secrets of the Telephone Box.

Have you ever heard of the word “kidult”? It means an adult who buys children’s toys to play with. Take Anna Jones for example.
