Running a marathon is an important goal for many people, but completing 42.2 kilometers is a real challenge. So where should you start training for your first marathon?
It’s a good idea to have a goal, as running coach Carla Molinaro told Runner’s World. First, you should choose a race you want to run. Then, you should ask yourself: Do I just want to finish? Or do I want a specific finish time? When you have a goal, you’ll know how much work you need to do. For example, if someone already runs regularly (有规律地) (perhaps 10 kilometers or more each week), their training time may be shorter than a beginner’s.
Next, you’ll need a training plan. For example, how far can you run each week? How much time can you spend running each week? There are lots of different training plans online. Find a plan that is right for you and your time.
However, a training plan is not only about running. Experts say that the right food and enough sleep help you be a good runner. It’s also important that you don’t do too much: good training plans include rest days, easy runs, and activities like swimming or strength training.
Remember, keeping a good balance in your plan—with enough rest and different kinds of exercises—will help you get to the start line safely and finally finish the 42.2-kilometer race.

Which way is north? One day, you might have to point in a different direction (方向) to find it. A new story says the North Pole might move about 27 meters to the west by 2100.
Scientists think this is because of climate change. It is making a lot of ice-melt (融化) quickly. Every second, 12,700 tons of melted ice water goes into the sea, said SciTech Daily.
Usually, the ground goes down under the heavy ice. But when the ice turns into water and runs into the sea, the ground goes up. This changes how Earth turns. So the North Pole will move.
A moving North Pole can make it difficult to know where things are in space, like satellites (卫星) and spaceships. Often, to map out where things are, we need to find north first. Now, scientists are working hard to learn more about this.
DID YOU KNOW?
It may be hard to believe, but Earth has three North Poles:
·Geographic North Pole: This is the pole in the passage. It is also called “true north”. We use it in our life to find north.
·Magnetic (磁性的) North Pole: A compass (指南针) points to this pole. It also moves a little every year. But that is natural and has little to do with climate change.
·Geomagnetic (地磁的) North Pole: This pole is not real. It is more like a science tool. Scientists use it to help them study Earth better.
12. Why does the North Pole move about 27 meters to the west by 2100?
A. Because people point in a wrong direction.
B. Because climate change melts a lot of ice.
C. Because the ground goes down under the ice.
D. Because the Earth turns slower than before.
13. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. How to find north. B. Why the ice melts.
C. What to map in space. D. How Earth turns now.
14. What can you learn from “DID YOU KNOW”?
①We can use Geographic North Pole to know the true north.
②Geographic North Pole is a science tool to study Earth.
③Both Geographic and Magnetic North Pole move, but for different reasons;
④Scientists think Magnetic North Pole moves because of climate change.
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ③④

Monty stomped to his bedroom. Nobody cared about him, he thought. He should run away. Run away! He was always saying he was going to run away. But he never did. Well, this time he would.
Monty climbed over the fence. He began to walk down the track. He could hear a rustle in the grass behind him. It was his dog. Trip. “Go home!” shouted Monty. “I’m running away!” But Trip had sniffed a rabbit and he was off through the trees. Monty began to chase Trip, but Trip was running like a racehorse.
Suddenly, Monty stopped. He wasn’t on the track anymore. There were tall trees all around him. Monty went one way and then the other. But there was no track. Monty felt fear. It crept over him like a fog. It was getting dark. The trees seemed to be coming closer and closer. Monty felt like a fly in a spider’s web. The trees were wrapping him up. Monty sat down on a log. His heart was thumping. He was lost.
Monty knew he had to stay where he was. Monty made a hole by the log. He lay in the hole and covered himself with the leaves. What if there were snakes in the leaves or army ants in the log? Army ants! They would sting him until he died. Monty began to shiver.
It was Trip that found Monty. The sun was coming up and he had only just gone to sleep. Trip licked him awake with his warm, wet tongue. Monty jumped out of his leaf bed.
“Trip!” he shouted. “Home! Go boy!”
Trip was off with his nose to the ground. Monty crashed through the trees after him. When Monty got home, there were people everywhere. His mother was crying. Even his sisters were crying! His dad was there too and he lived hours away.
Monty hid behind a tree and watched. It was only a minute, but it was enough. All these people cared about him, Monty.
Home was safe. Home was where he wanted to be.

12 Why does the North Pole move about 27 meters to the west by 2100?
③Both Geographic and Magnetic North Pole move, but for different reasons;
④Scientists think Magnetic North Pole moves because of climate change.
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②④ D. ③④
15. Where does this passage probably come from?
A. A travel diary. B. A world map. C. A science news. D. A history book.

Monty was angry, again. His mother had said he couldn’t go to his friend’s place. “You have to help me,” she said. Monty didn’t think it was fair. He always had to help her. His sisters just had to look after the baby. They liked looking after the baby. It wasn’t fair.
