Second, regular exercise keeps us strong. Playing basketball or cycling for 30 minutes helps build strong muscles. Even walking to school gives us enough activity. Exercise isn’t just about sports—dancing and jumping rope are fun choices too!

My name is Joan MacDonald, and I am 75 years old. Five years ago I was overweight. I had to take medicine for high blood pressure and my shoulders really hurt. I often felt so tired that I had difficulty walking up and down stairs. I got emotional (易激动的) easily as well, and I was in great need of a change.
My daughter Michelle came to me and offered me the chance to work out with her that winter. I would be taking part in an online group with other women who were all working to change their habits and take the best possible care of themselves.
With the help of Michelle and the team of women, I learned how to use an iPhone for the first time in my life. It was unbelievably hard work, and there were many days when I was in tears (眼泪) but I never gave up. I renewed my gym membership (健身房会员), created balanced meals, moved around with confidence in the gym and I understood the importance of lifting heavy weights.
I don’t expect my changes to be very quick. I will go at my own speed. I think it’s human nature to wonder if we are on the right way or not, especially on a long trip. With the months flying by, I could see that we were all changing. My confidence in the gym was growing. We were all cheering each other on.
I’m now five years into my journey. I can honestly say that I am a different woman than I was when I started out. I really enjoy meeting other women and men who also want to live a healthier way of life.
If you wish to get your health improved, I can tell you that it is not an easy journey to go on. However, it is well worth it. I hope my story can give you the confidence.

Although many years have passed, I still clearly remember the first day of my high school at Oriental Land. As I sat down on my bed, I heard a loud noise — the wooden bed board had broken in half. I was really embarrassed.
I might have complained about the poor quality of the bed, but there was a fact that I was too heavy. Standing at 1.72 meters tall, I weighed 95 kilograms. Exercise had never been my thing. What’s worse, my parents always made my plate full of meat-heavy dishes, hoping I would grow strong. However, instead of being strong, all I could do was make my chairs groan (嘎吱声).
But perhaps more beds and chairs than ever are now at risk. According to a 2018 study, 50.7% of grown-ups and 19% of schoolchildren (aged 6-17) in China are overweight. Many people say they are too busy to exercise. They also have no time to cook at home and so often eat out.
After breaking that poor bed, I decided to lose some pounds. As my busy work often stopped me from exercising at the gym, I tried to stay active in my daily life. This habit has stayed with me. On some days, I ride the ten kilometers home after work. On other days, I take the bus, but I often get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way. On weekends, I usually stay busy with a good clean-up at home. This, along with a healthier diet, has worked for me. I’m now 21 kilograms lighter than I was in high school.
You certainly don’t have to break a bed to start your fitness journey. To get into a healthy habit, it’s better to act sooner than later.

3.The underlined sentence means ________.

BMI is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if you are fit. If your body mass index (指数) is over 30, you will be defined obesity (肥胖). As a result, some cities in China have included BMI in the PE test for the high school entrance examination, or Zhongkao. For example, Beijing declared that BMI became a subject of the PE test for the Zhongkao. Chengdu and Shanghai have also started similar actions. This change aims to encourage students to pay more attention to their health and exercise habits.
Zhang Yanshu is an eighth-grader from Beijing Chaoyang Foreign Language School. He started by running with his dad, and soon took training classes. “I think BMI and the events for the exam go well together. When I practice the events, my BMI gets better; when my BMI gets better, I feel more energetic doing the events.” Zhang also paid much attention to his food. “I ate brown rice instead of white rice, and chicken for meat most of the time,” he said. But his BMI reached a good level after four months of effort.
Chen Kaifei,14, also from Beijing said that BMI is also a problem for students who are too thin, and has caused some “figure anxiety (身材焦虑)” among students. “However, mostly I think it has a good influence,” Chen said. “Everyone has a better understanding of their body and health conditions, and I started to care about my lifestyle every day, simply to keep my BMI at a good level.”
Adding BMI to the Zhongkao PE test helps students focus on their health, but it also brings challenges. While some, like Zhang Yanshu, succeed by combining exercise and healthy eating, others worry about stress over body image. Schools and families should guide students to care for their health without feeling too much pressure.

D.It is mostly thought that it doesn’t have a good influence.
3.Which group of people is suitable for using BMI?

Teaching middle school students bike riding skills as part of physical education classes may improve their mental health, according to a new study. The research examined the effects of a 6-week cycling program in the US schools and found significant mental health benefits for students.
The study involved over 1,200 students aged 11 to 14 who participated in a program called Ride for Focus, run by the nonprofit organisation Outride. Students attended cycling classes at least three days a week for six weeks, learning safety and manoeuvring (操纵) skills while enjoying the outdoor physical activity. Before and after the program, students completed questionnaires to measure their well-being.
“We saw mental health benefits across the entire population,” said Sean Wilson, the study’s senior author. “The main outcome was a more positive outlook on life.” Exercise, including cycling, is known to improve mental health, and middle school is a critical time for such interventions (干预), as students often face social pressures, anxiety, and stress.
Esther Walker, a program manager at Outride, highlighted the social and physical benefits of cycling. “Riding with peers in a safe setting is important for adolescents (青少年),” she said. “It provides an outlet for stress and promotes physical activity.”
Dr Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University, noted that cycling engages many brain functions, such as sensory perception, balance, and navigation. “It’s also often a group activity, which adds social benefits,” he said. While exercise is not a cure-all, it is a powerful tool for mental health.
The study also found that students who limited screen time and got adequate sleep saw greater improvements in well-being. Although girls reported increased well-being after the program, their gains were smaller compared to boys.
Overall, the study suggests that cycling programs in schools can be a valuable addition to physical education, offering both mental and physical health benefits to adolescents.
1.How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By listing statistics about mental health. B.By quoting opinions from famous athletes.
C.By presenting the findings of a recent study. D.By comparing different types of exercise.
2.If students attended cycling classes, how many days of classes did they have at least?
A.14 days. B.18 days. C.24 days. D.48 days.
3.What do Sean Wilson, Esther Walker, and Dr Allan Reiss all agree about cycling?
A.It helps students get better grades. B.It improves mental health.
C.It should replace other PE classes. D.It works best when done alone.
4.What can we learn from the study’s findings about girls’ well-being?
A.Girls benefited more than boys from the program.
B.Girls’ mental health showed no improvement.
C.Girls’ improvements were less noticeable than boys’.
D.Girls preferred cycling alone rather than in groups.
5.What is the author’s attitude towards cycling programs in schools based on the article?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Hopeless. D.Unclear.

Do you want to be stronger, happier and healthier? Exercise now!
Exercise makes your heart healthy. Your heart makes blood move to all parts of your body. There is O2 in the blood, and it can keep your body going well. To make your heart stronger, you need to do exercise, such as running, swimming and playing ping-pong.
Exercise builds you up. It can make you healthy and strong. For example, climbing is good for you in some ways, but you must be careful when you do it.
Doing exercise stops you from being fat. It will help burn (消耗) your fat. If you burn more fat than you take in, you’ll become thinner. When you’re happy with your build, you can still exercise to help you keep it.
Exercise also helps you have a happy day. After you get up, you can exercise for some minutes. It’s a good start of the day.
At the same time, you don’t need to do lots of exercise at a time. It’s enough to exercise for 30~60 minutes a day. Start exercising and you will live a healthy life!

Dear Dr. Smith,
I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to tell you about my recent health problems.
Last Monday, while I was playing basketball with my friends, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my right knee. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to it. I thought it was just a common injury that would get better soon. But the pain didn’t go away. Instead, it got worse. I could hardly walk the next day.
I decided to see a doctor. The doctor examined my knee carefully and said I had hurt it badly. He told me to rest for a week and not to do any sports. That made me really sad because I love playing basketball.
Now, it’s been several days. The pain is still there, though it’s a bit less painful. I’m worried. Do you think I can start playing basketball again?
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,
David
