必修第一册 UNIT 2 TRAVELLING AROUND
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A 篇(限时7分钟)
(2025·济宁模拟)The hour of sleep lost in the change to Daylight Saving Time (DST),the practice of setting the clocks forward one hour from standard time during the summer months to make better use of natural daylight, appears to reduce people's possibility to help others, the researchers found.Specifically, they showed that average donations to one US-based nonprofit organization dropped by around 10 percent in the workweek after the time change compared with four weeks before and after the change.
To test the link between sleep loss and generosity,Ben Simon of the University of California,Berkeley and her team first brought 23 young adults into the lab for two nights and had the participants sleep through one night and stay awake for another night. In the mornings, participants completed an altruism questionnaire (利他主义问卷) rating their likelihood of helping others. For instance, participants rated on a scale from 1 to 5,with 1 for being least likely to help and 5 for most likely, whether they would give up their seat on a bus to a stranger or offer a ride to a coworker in need.Roughly 80 percent of participants showed less likelihood of helping others when sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的) than when rested. The researchers then compared each participant's brain activity in a rested state with that in a sleep-deprived state, which showed that sleep deprivation reduced activity in a network of brain regions linked to the ability to empathize (共情) with others.
In another experiment, the researchers found 136 participants online and had them keep a sleep record for four nights. The researchers found that the more time participants spent being awake in bed,a measure of poor sleep, the lower their altruism questionnaire scores. That drop in altruism held true both when comparing individuals to themselves and when averaging scores across the group.Focusing on DST,the researchers looked at charitable donations from 2001 to 2016 to a charity: in the workweek following the time change, total donations, which typically averaged roughly $82 per day, dropped to about $73 per day.
Scientists say the result tells a more complex story about how inefficient sleep affects decisions on helping others. But unlike many other social problems—like climate change—this one has a ready solution if you think about promoting sleep.

B 篇(限时7分钟)
It's no secret now that the more time we spend on social media, the more we feel dissatisfied with ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to influencers and celebrities—so it's easy to understand how that can affect our confidence.
But,how often have you found yourself comparing your life to your friends? Engaging with social media shared by our friends can be more damaging than looking at contents shared by celebrities, new research has found.
The study looking at how social media affects body image found that any social media engagement was significantly associated with lower “appearance satisfaction”.Additionally,it found that engaging with contents posted by people the participants knew was more than twice as damaging as looking at contents posted by strangers, including celebrities.
Viren Swami,Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, believes this is partly because we know it's hard to attain the lives of celebrities or influencers, but when we're comparing ourselves to our friends,it feels like we should—or could—live the way they do.
“One possible explanation is that people may perceive a post showing appearance as being much more attainable if it comes from someone they know, adding expectation or pressure on the person engaging in the post,” he said.“At the same time, people may be more critically engaged with posts by the likes of models and celebrities, and therefore perceive the images they share to be more unrealistic.”
This isn't just confined to body image though. We all have one area in our lives that triggers (触发) us.Maybe you've been searching for a new job for months and you find yourself on social media, envying your school friend who just landed their dream role.Maybe...
All this is to state the obvious:We only see part of people's lives—and if it's getting you down, you're probably comparing your insides to other people's outsides.Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So,put down your phone, get offline,be thankful and try to live your own life.

D.Stop complaining and get down to work.
B [推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Everyone has their struggles and life is indeed not perfect for anyone. So,put down your phone, get offline,be thankful and try to live your own life.”可知,作者建议人们停止比较,做自己。故选B。]

Overtourism Is For Real:
How Can You Help?
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 1 Certainly not.The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today's world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
•Choose mindfully.Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they're special. With so many online posts featuring the same places,it's easy to feel like you're missing out.Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 2
•Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else.Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world,it's actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. 3 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination's lesser-known sights?
• 4 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You'll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege (荣幸).Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 5 You may be amazed how much closer you'll feel to the people there.
A.Visit during off-peak times.
B.So,should we stop traveling?
C.Travel for you and no one else.
D.Can overtourism be avoided then?
E.You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F.You'll find yourself virtually alone,or close to it.
G.Consider giving back to the communities you're visiting.
