Located in the hills of Zhenfeng county in Guizhou province's Qianxinan Bouyei and
Miao autonomous prefecture,Yanyu village offers a good glimpse into the rich cultural
heritage of the Bouyei tribe. As part of my journey with the 2024 China Storytellers
Partnership tour,I immersed myself in their age-old traditions.
During my visit,I was warmly welcomed by the entire community, who greeted us with
dragon dances and large amounts of rice wine. But what really impressed me was the village's
own style of tie-dyeing ()reflecting the tribe's deep connection with nature and
community.
After witnessing the villagers dyeing banners for the celebration,I rushed for my
suitcase, eager to apply their art to my clothes! They demonstrated this thorough process
using natural dyes got from plants and minerals(矿物),skilfully transforming plain fabric(布
into beautiful, mixed designs that tell unique stories. Each piece is not just a garment but
a canvas of history and identity. The materials used are also essential components of
traditional Chinese medicine.
As I watched them work, they shared tales of their ancestors and the significance of
their craft.Emphasizing sustainability, they highlighted the importance of preserving
ancient techniques in the face of modernization.
I was initially hesitant about this deeply colored dye,but the villagers ensured I'd have
perfectly bright blue designs. The experience was not merely about fashion;it was a
celebration of culture and creativity deeply rooted in the Bouyei way of life.
As tourism grows,Yanyu village remains a shining example of how cultural heritage can
attract visitors while fostering respect and appreciation for the traditions that continue to
boom in modern China.

Many people assume today's easy long-distance collaboration()should produce an
unmatched flood of innovative scientific research-but,oddly,a new study suggests the
opposite may be true.
The study, conducted by University of Pittsburgh social scientist Lingfei Wu and his
colleagues,suggests that remote collaboration may,in fact,limit disruptive (
discoveries. The researchers analyzed 20 million research papers over several decades,
scoring them on their "disruptiveness",or how much they go beyond earlier work and lead to
new paths of research.
The findings show that as the physical distance between collaborators increases to 600
kilometers or more, the likelihood of their research being disruptive declines by about 25%.
This trend holds across different fields, team sizes, and time periods.Wu's team also found
that researchers working together in person were more likely to engage in conceptual tasks,
which are more likely to foster disruptive ideas, while remote collaborators focused more on
technical tasks like data analysis.
Additionally, the study revealed that in-person collaboration better integrated junior
researchers into conceptual work, fostering new talent. In contrast, remote collaboration led
to less idea-sharing,particularly when there was a large gap in seniority between
collaborators. This finding, according to University of Arizona sociologist Erin Leahey,
highlights the importance of face-to-face interactions in fostering new ideas and guiding
young researchers.
The findings challenge the assumption that merely connecting people online leads to the
growth of new ideas."There's something missing in this approach,"Wu says.In theory,
remote collaboration enables more new combinations of knowledge-but Wu believes it also
makes it harder to put the pieces together."If you want to encourage ground-breaking
innovation, you've got to bring people together,"he says."You cannot just rely on digital
system.”
28.How did Wu's team evaluate the research papers?
A.By examining the publication years.
B.By assessing the collaboration approaches.
C.By scoring the collaboration levels.
D.By analyzing the contributions to new research.
29.What activity are in-person collaborators more likely to participate in?
A.Developing innovative concepts.
B.Conducting data analysis.
C.Reviewing past research.
D.Preparing research reports.
30.What can be inferred about face-to-face interactions in research collaboration?
A.They are less important for junior researchers.
B.They reduce the reliance on digital communication tools.
C.They help generate new ideas and instruct junior researchers.
D.They primarily enhance technical skills and data analysis.
高二英语试题第5页(共10页)
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Digital systems are essential and reliable for innovation.
B.In-person collaboration drives more research innovation.
C.In-person collaboration can support junior researchers better.
D.Combination of remote and in-person collaboration brings innovation.

The world was astonished on Wednesday when half of the Nobel Prize in chemistry went
to US scientist David Baker for "computational protein design"and the other half to Demis
Hassabis and John M.Jumper in London for "protein structure prediction".
There is no doubt that they have made amazing breakthroughs. The Nobel Prize
committee remarked that "they cracked the code for proteins'amazing structures".What
attracted global attention is the fact that both Hassabis and Jumper come from Google
DeepMind, which specializes in artificial intelligence, and they created an AI model that
fundamentally changes the way to study a protein's structure.
It's notable that the AI model Hassabis and Jumper developed is central to understanding
the structure of proteins,in which amino acids()are linked together in long chains
and then fold in a manner that plays a decisive role in its functioning.Since the 1970s,
researchers have been trying to predict protein structures from their amino acid sequences
(so as to gain a deeper understanding of their functions, for which they even launched
Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction, which conducts community experiments in this
regard.
For long the accuracy rate of predictions was just about 40 percent, far below the
required 90 percent. It was not until Hassabis and Jumper developed the AI model AlphaFold
that the rate reached 60 percent, which has since got better with AlphaFold2.
By understanding the three-dimensional(structure of a protein, scientists can
infer its role and how it interacts with other molecules(),helping study diseases and
develop new drugs.Besides, predicting protein structures helps in better comprehending the
origins of life, which is linked to the Nobel Prize in physiology that went to researches in
mRNA.
All these date back to Hassabis and Jumper's AlphaFold model developed decades ago.
Clearly,AI has helped mankind by making endless computations a cakewalk,in the process
quickening studies of the protein structure. The scientists who developed it deserve the prize
as more scientists will now be encouraged to study it.
32.What astonished the world when Hassabis and Jumper won the Nobel Prize in chemistry?
A.Their not coming from a chemistry-focused company.
B.Their consistent cooperation in the AI field.
C.Their attempts at solving some AI problems.
D.Their contributions to computational protein design.
高二英语试题第6页(共10页)
33.What does the underlined word "cracked"in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Doubted.
B.Lost.
C.Defended.
D.Broke.
34.With the AI model developed by Hassabis and Jumper, scientists can
A.study diseases and develop new drugs
B.conduct community experiments in the lab
C.predict the protein's structure more precisely
D.have more time to better comprehend the origins of life
35.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.AI models won't help make endless computations a cakewalk.
B.Scientists have understood the three-dimensional structure of a protein.
C.The structure of a protein interacts with other molecules in an active way.

(Text 2)
W:I'll call you next Monday to let you know how the party went
M:I'm going to be out all day next Monday because my mom's having a small operation that day.
(Text 3)
W:We stopped by to see if you could join us tonight.
M:It's just not possible tonight. After I finish this physics homework,I'm going to the library to get some reference
books to finish my project.
(Text 4)

M:I could kick myself. As soon as I'd handed it in,I remembered what the answer was.
W:That's always so annoying! But do you think you've still passed?
(Text 6)
W:Let's go somewhere exciting this year.
M:Mm.You say that every year, and every year we end up staying with your sister in Blackpool.
W:I know, but this year I want to do something different.
M:Like going to Brighton to see your mother?
W:Be sensible.I want to go abroad..see something exciting and get some sun.
M:We haven't been abroad since our honeymoon,and that's 25 years ago.Ah,now I see!
W:Well, yes. It is our silver wedding anniversary, and we should go somewhere special.
(Text 7)
M:How was the school sports day?Sorry I couldn't help.
W:Don't worry about it.We had plenty of volunteers;lack of help wasn't a problem.The weather was,though.You
know it started to pour down at midday and we got completely wet.
M:Oh,no.I thought of you when I saw the rain.
W:It completely ruined the whole day for me.The students couldn't care less,of course. They thought it was a great
laugh. And we did manage to raise the money for a new sound system for the hall, which was the whole point of
it.So the head teacher was glad, which is the main thing.
(Text 8)
M:Did you act a role in the school play,Zoe?
W:Yes,Kevin.I'm going to be Juliet.
M:You must be really excited. So who's going to be your Romeo?Don't tell me it's Tim Lewis.I'm so jealous.
W:Actually no.It's going to be David Smith, which is cool because he's also really cute.
M:So didn't Tim try out for acting the role of Romeo?
W:Yes,he did,but Miss Rose chose David.
M:He can't have been happy about that. How did he take it?
W:Really badly.Miss Rose offered him another really big part but he just walked out and said he didn't want to be in
the play.
M:Oh dear.Maybe I should go and talk to him to see if I can cheer him up.
(Text 9)
W:Wow,that was such a great film!I love action films.
M:So do I,but this one wasn't as good as I'd expected.When I read the book,I couldn't put it down,but I never felt
that excitement during the film.
W:Hmm,I know what you mean, though sometimes it works the other way, like last week's film.
M:Which one was that?I don't remember.
W:That's because you weren't able to come to the film club that day!Your mom wanted you to go to the newly-
opened Oakbrook Center with her,remember?
M:Oh yeah,to get trousers for school.Boring! But you were saying thatthat film was better than the book?
W:It was, yeah. The story of the book takes place in India and I didn't really know anything about India. The film
really brings the places to life.
M:That's true, but with characters it can be a problem too.I was shocked when a crime series I'd read and enjoyed
was made for TV.The detective looked nothing like my picture of him.He had no hair on his head, for a start!
W:How funny!
M:Well, what about next week's film club? Are we going?
W:What is the film about?
M:My favorite-a scary movie!
W:OK,see you there.
(Text 10)
W:I've learned so many languages. However,I have the deepest emotional connection with Greek because my
grandmother was from Greece and I've heard it ever since I was a child. But I also really like speaking German.I
always feel a little bit guilty that I'm from the UK,because I've just learned a few of our local languages here.
The biggest challenge for me with learning a new language was with Russian. There were a number of things that
I wasn't expecting to be hard as they were. For example, there's a whole new set of letters. It's not too different to
English. But when you're trying to learn a word,it's just an extra barrier to memorizing that word.First, you have to
read it and understand what all of the letters mean and then have to actually memorize it.
Technology has been an amazing resource for me.I could just watch videos in different languages all evening.
The Internet has brought all of those cultures much closer to me and made them much more accessible. And since then
I think there's a lot of technology out there to help me learn vocabulary or to teach me grammar.
